KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team's five ninth inning runs were not enough as their comeback fell short against Swarthmore College, 9-6, on the second day of the D3 Showcase.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Campbell Charneco singled to start the game before Nick Lagges singled up the middle of the infield to bring home Charneco to put the Generals (1-1) up 1-0.
- The Garnet (1-1) wasted no time in the first inning, loading the bases following two walks and a single. The third walk of the inning knotted the game up at one before Benjamin Buchman blasted a grand slam to right field to break the game open, putting the Garnet up 5-1.
- Both offense stalled until the bottom of the fifth where Aidan Sullivan tripled to lead off the inning before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly the next at-bat.
- Swarthmore extended their lead to eight in the bottom of the eighth after scoring three runs on three hits. Buchman doublded to center before coming around to score on a sacrifice bunt. Another single and double plated two more runs for the Garnet, giving them a 9-1 lead heading into the final frame.
- Jack Belbot came in to pinch hit in the top of the ninth, doubling to left center to kick off the inning. Landen Rucker wore a pitch in the next at-bat before John Turner singled through the right side to load the bases. Mike Carpenter and Preston Larmore drew back-to-back walks to cut the Garnet lead to six.
- Turner came around to score following a wild pitch before back-to-back singles from Charneco and Paul Ramseur drove in Carpenter and Larmore to bring the score to 9-6. Peter Frometa shut the door as he struck out Frankie Maloof to secure the win for Swarthmore.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Blue and White fall to 1-1 on the season while falling to 1-3 in the all-time series against the Garnet.
- Evan Blair (0-1) was credited with teh loss after allowing five runs on two hits while walking three batters. Cooper Charneco tossed four shutout innings in relief, striking out two batters while Brody Pasieka and Henry Steene combined for four innings with two strikeouts.
- Campbell Charneco led the offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with one RBI and one walk. Nick Lagges registered two hits in his three at-bats with one run batted in.
SWARTHMORE GAME NOTES
- Swarthmore notched their first win of the season, moving to 1-1.
- Noah Potholm (1-0) earned the win for the Garnet, allowing one run (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
- Buchman led the Garnet at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and a grand slam. Aidan Sullivan and Nathaniel Kittredge each had two hits for Swarthmore.
