Haverford given first loss by Johns Hopkins

No. 17 Johns Hopkins swept No. 21 Haverford by a cumulative score of 20-1 on Saturday holding the Fords to just six hits in 18 innings of play. In the opener, Chris Wilhelm belted two home runs and Tyler Goldstein notched a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game effort to lead No. 17 Johns Hopkins No. 21 Haverford, 8-0. In the nightcap, the Blue Jays turned a two-run game into a rout as it exploded for nine runs in the eighth inning to defeat Haverford, 12-1.

Sophomore Connor Savage smashed a grand slam in the eighth inning to lead  Puget Sound to a 9-7 upset of No. 1 Linfield. The game went back-and-forth all day with the lead changing hands three times before the Loggers were able to overcome Division III’s top-ranked team.

Bridgewater (Va.) scored 18 runs on 17 hits in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to take an 18-6 victory and salvage a split with the No. 8 ranked Christopher Newport Captains. CNU won the opener, 12-4. The win is the second this week for the Eagles over a nationally-ranked team. Bridgewater defeated No. 12 Shenandoah, 11-2, earlier in the week.

No. 6 Kean split in their first two games of the NJAC schedule by falling 3-0 in the opener and winning 4-2 in the nightcap against Rutgers-Camden. The opener belonged to the Scarlet Raptors as junior southpaw Ryan Farabella fired a complete game, one hit, shutout. He allowed just one single, a clean shot through the hole by pinch-hitter Ryan Reitmeyer in the eighth frame. Farabella fanned eight and walked one in the win. In game two, Kean rallied from a 1-0 deficit to plate four in the fourth, and Cougar pitching made the number hold for the win.

No. 22 Birmingham-Southern defeated Centre twice today to complete the three-game series sweep of the Colonels, winning 11-2 and 4-2. The Panthers move to 20-8 overall and 11-1 in the SAA, leading the league standings. The Colonels fall to 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the SAA.

No. 11 Saint Joseph's (Maine) split a GNAC doubleheader with Lasell at Larry Mahaney Diamond. The Lasers stunned the Monks in the opener, 4-2, but the hosts responded with a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap to salvage the split. Lasell sophomore starter David Long kept the Monks off balance in game one as St. Joe's aided Lassell's efforts with errors that led to three unearned runs. Saint Joseph's showed a bit more fire in the closing contest as they paired timely hitting and errors on the Lasers for the win.

Manchester took the weekend series with Transylvania with a sweep on Saturday.

A pair of strong starting pitching performances helped key No. 16-ranked Manchester to a HCAC sweep over Transylvania. Senior Kyle Konarski upped his season record to 4-0 with his first complete game effort in the opener. He struck out six and scattered seven Pioneer hits during the 2-1 Spartan victory. Game two was highlighted by a six-run Black and Gold rally over two frames to aid the pitching of senior starter Justin Scott.

Wheaton (Mass.) swept a pair of NEWMAC games against Babson at Sidell Stadium. The Lyons won game one by a score of 11-2 and posted an 8-3 triumph in the nightcap. Alec Palioca went the distance in game one allowing five hits, two runs (both earned), three walks and a season-high nine strikeouts. Nick Filloramo evened his record to 2-2 overall on the season going six innings, yielding eight hits, two runs (both earned), one walk and two strikeouts. In the two-game set, Eric Lavanchy hit for the cycle, compiled a .667 (4-for-6) batting average, scored three runs and drove in five.

No. 12 Shenandoah completed its week with an ODAC doubleheader split against Virginia Wesleyan. Shenandoah was a 1-0 winner in the opener before the Marlins came back to win 3-2 in the nightcap. In game one, Philip Morse and Michael Scimanico combined to throw a five-hit shutout. Morse allowed the five hits in 5.1 before Scimanico came on with runners on first and second and one out in the sixth.

Ramapo swept a doubleheader from Rowan as both teams open NJAC play.  The Roadrunners came from behind in both games to win 4-2 and 6-5. PJ Cerreto went the distance on the mound and recorded nine strikeouts in game one. In the nightcap, Ramapo needed to rely on their offense as  Christian Spurr scored the winning run on a single by Venturino in the ninth inning.

Senior Mike Hughes pitched eight shutout innings in the nine-inning opener and senior Kyle Barkley threw six shutout frames in the seven-inning nightcap as nationally second-ranked Cortland swept host Plattsburgh by identical 7-0 scores in a SUNYAC doubleheader.

No. 15 UW-Whitewater totaled 37 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Ripon at Prucha Field in James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.  he Warhawks tallied 22 hits in a 15-3 victory in game one and 15 hits in a 10-2 win in game two.

Sophomore left-hander Dan Fein pitched his first collegiate complete game, allowing five hits over seven innings as No. 4 Salisbury won the second game of its CAC doubleheader with Frostburg State, 3-1 at the SU Baseball Field. The Bobcats came from behind with four runs in the final three innings for a 5-4 victory in the opener.

Marietta opened OAC play in grand fashion with a dominating sweep of Ohio Northern. The Pioneers won the first game 13-4 and then posted a 16-0 shutout in game two. The Pioneers sent 13 hitters to the plate in the top of the first inning of game one to set the tone for the day. Once the Etta Express was rolling there was no stopping it. The Pioneers carried the momentum into game two and collected 17 more hits in their rout of the Polar Bears.

Mississippi College finished off a three-game sweep of #25 Huntingdon with a come-from-behind, 6-5, win at Frierson Field. The Choctaws trailed in each of the three games and came away with wins.  For Mississippi College, it is their second three-game winning streak of the season.
