Pitching key to Friday wins

Junior starting pitcher Andrew Grann and senior starting pitcher Chris Chismar each had a brilliant outing to earn a pair of wins for the New Paltz State over Brockport State in a SUNYAC doubleheader at Webster Turf Field. The Hawks took a 9-1 victory in the opener, and then grabbed a 3-1 win in the finale.

Behind seven shutout innings of one-hit ball from freshman Rosario DiLorenzo and four hits from sophomore Thomas McKenna, St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) captured an 11-2 victory over CCNY at Randalls Island. The Bears have assembled a three-game streak while the Beavers have traded wins and losses over their last five games.

Senior pitcher Eliot Smith pitched another gem for Redlands and junior center-fielder Alex Scheiwe came up with a game-saving catch en route to an exciting 2-1 SCIAC triumph over Chapman at The Yard.

Sean Meekins scattered 11 hits in a complete-game effort and Joe Papa doubled twice and drove in four runs to lead the Trinity (Conn.) Bantams to an 8-2 victory over the Bowdoin Polar Bears in NESCAC East Division action. The game was the opener of a three-game series that was moved to Trinity due to unplayable field conditions at Bowdoin, and was also the NESCAC East Division opener for both squads.

Handing head coach Marty Hunter his 150th college coaching win in the first game and giving him a bonus victory in the second, the George Fox Bruins defeated the defending NWC champion Whitworth Pirates 5-1 and 11-3 at Morse Field. The twin wins kept the Bruins two games behind league-leading and No. 1-ranked Linfield. Hunter is now 151-81 in his sixth season as the Bruins’ head coach. He is the third baseball coach in George Fox history to reach 150 wins, along with Pat Bailey and Pat Casey.

The fifth inning was the difference in Wooster's 11-6, 11-3 sweep of Kenyon, as the Fighting Scots combined for 10 of their runs that inning, seven in the opener to overcome a 3-0 deficit and three in the second game to extend a 3-2 lead, during the teams' first NCAC East Division doubleheader of 2013, played at Gambier, Ohio.

Gwynedd-Mercy right-hander Matt Rakus tossed seven shutout innings before New Jersey City University finally broke up the shutout bid in the ninth inning as the Griffins defeated NJCU, 7-1,. NJCU has its two-game winning streak snapped. The Griffins stole eight bases in the game and scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to claim a 5-0 lead, before adding single runs in the fifth and eighth frames.

For the first time since 2005, Louisiana College took a series on the road ASC foe Texas-Dallas, as the Wildcats won the rubber match of the series 4-2 behind another outstanding pitcher pitching performance by sophomore right-hander Josh Lang. Lang picked up the win to move to 3-3 on the year, as he threw a complete game, giving up 10 hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

Stevens earned a split in the opening Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against St. John Fisher at Dobbelaar Field. Stevens dropped Game One, 10-7, but fought back for a 9-5 Game Two victory to salvage the split.

Thomas More defeated Westminster (Pa.), 13-4, in a PAC game at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. Thomas More scored one in the second, nine in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh, while holding Westminster to one run in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth for the 13-4 victory. Senior pitcher Paul Uhl earned the win on the mound as he pitched seven innings giving up one run on six hits and struck out two.

Alex McGill and Stephen Gaylor both had four hits as Berry defeated Rhodes, 9-6, at Stauffer Field. Gaylor was 4-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases and 2 RBI. McGill went 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI.

Mary Hardin-Baylor blew Concordia (Texas) off a wind-swept Tornado Field in game two as the Cru split a doubleheader with the Tornados in Austin. UMHB took game two 15-4 in a game shortened to seven innings on the run rule after Concordia won a 2-0 pitcher's duel in game one.

Albion improved to 6-0 against MIAA rivals by sweeping a doubleheader from Trine by scores of 8-2 and 5-4 at Frank Joranko Field. Albion and Hope are the only remaining unbeaten teams in league play. Albion never trailed in the doubleheader as it jumped out to 5-0 leads in both games.

Endicott scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then held off the MIT Engineers, picking up a 3-2 victory at North Field. Endicott senior Brendan Pittsley improved to 2-0 on the year after allowing just one run on four hits over six and a third innings. Pittsley struck out five batters and surrendered just one base on balls. The Gulls had six hits in the game, two each by first baseman Brett Holmgren and outfielder Colin Sitarz. With both those batters on in the first, third baseman EJ Martinez drove a triple to center field to give Endicott a 2-0 advantage and pick up RBIs six and seven on the season.

Washington & Jefferson pitching allowed just one earned run and six hits as the Presidents upped their PAC record to 5-0 with a pair of victories over Geneva at Ross Memorial Park.  W&J routed the Golden Tornadoes 10-0 during game one and edged GC 3-1 to claim the nightcap. Junior right-hander Eddie Nogay earned his fourth victory in as many appearances this season after throwing five shutout innings during game one. Junior Marc Rizzo and senior Corey Young both tossed scoreless innings of relief to complete the shutout.

Willamette starters Peter Hoffman and Parker Johnson held Pacific to seven hits combined in two games, leading the way for the Bearcats as they swept the Boxers in a NWC doubleheader at Chuck Bafaro Stadium. Hoffman allowed the Boxers just one hit over the first seven innings while Walker Olis had two of the Boxers' three hits as Willamette went on to the 4-1 victory in the opener. Johnson threw five innings of no-hit baseball and did not allow an earned run as the 5-1 win completed the twinbill sweep. Brandon Chinn led Willamette's offensive charge with five hits in the two games.

Wesley dropped a 1-0 decision at CAC rival Mary Washington at Dickinson Stadium. Freshman Eric Willey engaged in a pitchers duel with Mary Washington senior Michael Straub before the Eagles plated a runner with two outs in their final at bat. Willey finishd the day allowing an eaned run on eight hits while fanning three. Straub allowed three hits in nine innings of work.
