Washington freshman Rees Viersen held New York University to one-hit over five innings pitched as he picked up the win during the Bears' 3-0 victory which clinched the Bears opening four-game UAA series at MCU Park. The Bears improved to 14-8 on the year, including a 3-1 record in UAA play while dropping NYU to 16-4 overall on the year (1-3 UAA).
Viersen surrended just one single in five innings of work to pair with six strikeouts and no walks as he improved to 2-0 on the year. Tague concluded the game by recording the final 12 outs, four by strikeout for his second save of the series.
WashU outhit NYU 8-6 in the contest, as senior Auggie Mense and sophomore AJ Dunham led the Bears with multi-hit performances. Junior Evan Nagel scored two of the Bears runs, including the game-winner in the second.
Case Western Reserve freshman pitcher Matt Levine pitched the first complete-game shutout of his career on Sunday morning, lifting the 13th-ranked Spartans to a 4-0 win over Emory at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. The win clinched a series victory for the Spartans, who improved to 16-3 overall and sit in first place in the University Athletic Association with a 3-1 conference record. Emory dropped to 10-13 with the loss, including a 1-3 mark in the league.
Levine surrendered just six hits and a walk in the game, while striking out four batters. He allowed just one runner past second base in the game, and at one point retired nine-consecutive hitters between the sixth and ninth innings. The right-handed pitcher needed to throw just 103 pitches in the complete-game shutout, the first by a Spartan pitcher since former CWRU hurler Jake Shields registered one against Brandeis on April 2nd last season. Levine improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while lowering his earned run average to 1.80.
Alfred State led Pitt-Greensburg 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but with one out in the inning and a 1-1 count, Parlak belted his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game at seven and sent the game into extra innings. This is the second straight game that Parlak has homered to tie or give Pitt-Greensburg the lead, as he smashed a grand slam to give the Bobcats an 8-6 victory in their game against Bethany.
There was no comeback for the Panthers in game two. Colin Johnson hit a pair of homers as Alfred State earned a split of an doubleheader. JJohnson was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 3 for 3. He finished the doubleheader 5 for 6 with 6 RBI. Nick Mahoney (Lakewood, OH) earned the win out of the bullpen while Danny Doran (Irondequoit) got the final four outs of the game to record his second save of the year.
Maine-Presque Isle dropped a doubleheader to Fisher, 8-1 and 8-4 as they joined six other D-III teams to play on Easter Sunday.
