Nolan McCarthy pitched another gem and Occidental scored in all but two innings on its way to a 10-0 win at Whittier on Friday in game one of a three-game series with the Poets this weekend. McCarthy, a junior from Portland, Ore., struck out nine batters, and gave up just three hits and one walk in nine outstanding innings pitched. The 6-foot-5 righty has been about as good as you can be through 26 innings this season with 32 strikeouts and just four walks, and an ERA of 1.38. In all five of his outings this year, McCarthy has either earned the win or the save. McCarthy is one of three Oxy starters whose ERAs are less than 1.50. Tom Butler is at 1.29 and Diego Ramirez is at 1.42.
Carroll (1-3) opened up their annual spring trip with a convincing 11-1 win over North Central (Minn.). Offensively, Matthew Putman would continue his torrid start, finishing the day 4x5 with a home run, double and a pair of RBI. Adam Baade would record his first collegiate three hit performance, finishing the day 3x5 with three runs scored. Senior Cameron Godinsky was brilliant on the mound. After surrendering the early run, Godinsky would give up just five more hits in the game to earn the victory. Godinsky would need just 67 pitches over his eight innings of work.
King's College senior Christian Pack had three hits including the 150th of his career to lead the Monarchs to a doubleheader sweep of Wentworth Tech in Winter Haven, FL. King's won by scores of 8-7 and 8-4 to pick up their first two wins of the year. Pack entered the day needing two hits to reach the milestone and after recording a hit in four at-bats during the game one victory, he drove the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the first of game two between the third baseman and shortstop for his milestone hit. He became just the ninth Monarch in program history to reach 150 hits in a career. The Monarchs (2-4) received great pitching in relief from a pair of freshmen as Colby Toth and Shane Beyer picked up their first collegiate victories on the mound.
No. 21 Misericordia closed out its Spring Break trip with an 8-2 win over Moravian, in Port Charlotte, FL. Parker Abate had two hits and drove in two runs and Kenny Jarema had two hits and scored two runs. Steve Weisensee added two RBI. Ian McCole scattered nine hits over seven innings to earn the win while Drake Koch and Kyle Melahn both tossed a hitless inning of relief.
Nathan Malinovsky and Zach Perry combined on a seven-hit shutout of Millikin in Texas Lutheran's 7-0 non-conference victory at Katt-Isbel Field. Malinovsky pitched six strong innings, striking out 10 and scattering six hits. He walked two. Malinovsky improved to 2-1. Perry tossed the final three innings for the save. He struck out three and allowed just two base-runners.
A rally starting in the fourth inning gave Plattsburgh State (2-1) a 10-8 win over Bard (2-1) at Honey Field. Senior PJ Weeks took the win for Plattsburgh State after coming in to pitch the last seven innings. Weeks recorded five scoreless innings and allowed four hits, one run, walked two and struck out seven. Senior Patrick Bryant led the Cardinals with two runs and two RBIs while senior Jon Craft had one hit, two runs and two RBIs.

Wheaton (Mass.) opened the RussMatt Invitational with a 5-2 win over No. 15 Webster, behind a six-inning, six strikeouts, one walk and one run performance from sophomore Paul Prue who got the start and the win for the Lyons. The win is the first of lefty's career. Junior Nick Raposo ended the contest 3-for-3 from the plate with a walk. First baseman Bryant Salkind finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, while Willy Boyd knocked in two runs on a 1-for-4 night. The Gorloks were led by Danny Strohm who finished 3-for-4 from the plate, while Kyler Kent finished 2-for-4.
After watching his team lose a 3-2 game to Gustavus Adolphus the day before, Carthage coach Augie Schmidt IV noted that his offensive attack was "feast or famine." On Friday, the it was all feast, as the Red Men (4-3) exploded for 21 hits in a 12-11 donnybrook win over Bemidji State (1-7) in Tucson, Ariz. Vince Schwartz led the Red Men by going four-for-six with three runs scored, two doubles and four RBI. Johnny Belskis went three-for-five with two RBI and Luke Beckmann three-for-six with an RBI.
Illinois College tore the cover off the ball on Friday, totaling 39 hits and 19 runs to end the team's trip to Florida with a pair of wins. The Blueboys held off two late charges from Illinois Wesleyan and Fredonia State , defeating the Titans, 12-9, and taking the Blue Devils down in extra innings, 7-6. Bailey Reed was 8-for-12 on the day with two runs scored and four RBIs.
The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets hosted the Blazers of Belhaven in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader, winning both games by a score of 8-5 and 19-8 to move their win streak to nine, eight in ASC play. Chandler Clark got the game one win for the Jackets and dealt 5 innings giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs while striking out 4. Brenden Clanton got the save for HPU, his 2nd of the year. Bryson Lyro, had another great start grabbing his 3rd win on the mound in the second game. He gave up 6 hits over his 6 innings and struck out 2. He gave up 3 runs, 3 earned. Kory Owen, Ethan Cerna and Landin Blass also saw action on the mound.

The fourth-ranked Trinity (Texas) opened a three-game series with a 9-2 victory over Rochester. Mark Tindall (2-0) hurled the first complete game of the season for a Tiger pitcher, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out seven batters. He now leads Trinity's pitching staff with 26 strikeouts this season. Dalys Binder came off the bench and reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-2 with two RBI and three runs scored. He tied a school record by becoming the seventh player in school history to hit two triples in a single game. The last Trinity player to equal the record was Pat Hirschberg in 2014.
Putting together strong rallies in both contests, East Texas Baptist split the doubleheader with the Texas-Dallas at Woods Field. ETBU won game one, 11-3, and then fell short in game two, 8-6. Derrick Findley was the winning pitcher going six innings allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Blake Bihm took the loss for UTD allowing all 11 runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings. The Comets would hang on for an 8-6 win in game two to split the series.
For the second straight day, Heidelberg defeated a ranked opponent. The Student Princes rallied to beat No. 25 Kean, 9-6, on the penultimate day of their annual Florida trip. Heidelberg, now 6-2, has won five straight. Matt Psychas was 3-for-5 with two triples, two RBI and two runs scored while Jake Davis delivered a critical two-run double. Kane Bateman, Kyle Jenkins and Parker Fronk each had two hits apiece. A short start put pressure on the Heidelberg bullpen, but Mason Metz, Brady Ansara and Joey Wenning were equal to the task.
Starting pitchers Doug Rives and Alexander Mondro to allow just five hits and one earned run and David Larson smashed a three-run homer in the first inning of game one as WPI swept its second straight doubleheader, besting Martin Luther 10-0 and 7-2 on its spring break trip at Lake Myrtle Park. Rives went the first five on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the young season. The senior righthander scattered just two hits, walked one fanned six in his five innings of work. Mondro also moved to 2-0 after going the first four innings, yielding three hits and one walk while striking out two.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy played a doubleheader against two different teams on its penultimate day at the Gene Cusic Classic down in Florida. The Mariners won its opener over Saint John's (Minn.) by a 7-3 final, before dropping a quick game to Otterbein, 3-2, in the second game. On the mound, freshman Garrett Aichele got the game one start and earned the victory after hurling five innings, allowing three runs on just three hits with four strikeouts.
Matt Bur hit a triple and a homerun and drove in a career-high four runs and Kellan Huang scattered two hits to power Albion College to an 11-0 victory over Penn State-New Kensington in a spring break baseball game shortened to seven innings. Huang collected three of Albion's nine hits. Bur and Olszewski collected two hits apiece. The run support was enough to lift Huang to 2-0 on the mound this season. He allowed two singles and hit a batter as New Kensington loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. Huang came back to retire the next two batters on fly balls.
Muskinggim defeated Dominican in game one of its doubleheader, 5-4. In the second game, the Muskies fell to Dominican, 10-5. In the first game, senior Evan Hinds pitched all seven innings for Muskingum. Hinds allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five batters. In game two Dominican pitcher Bryant Bagshaw picked up his second win of the season, 2-0. Bagshaw allowed just three runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
