Sophomore Tyler Bell tossed six shutout innings in his first career start and No. 14/14 Babson College erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning on its way to defeating MIT, 15-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field. Babson, which has won five in a row, improves to 22-4 overall and 11-2 in league play, while MIT slips to 13-12-1 overall and 5-6 in the NEWMAC with its fifth consecutive loss. Senior Edward Lehr went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI and classmate Eric Jaun doubled twice and drove in three runs for the Beavers. Fellow senior Nicholas Browne homered as part of a two-hit day, junior Jake Oliger and Sean Harrington drove in three runs, and classmate Matthew Valente singled twice, walked twice and scored a pair of runs in the victory.
Sixth-ranked Texas Lutheran registered 8-5 and 8-7 road victories Sunday against Centenary (La.) to complete a three-game conference series sweep at Shehee Stadium. TLU posted its first-ever conference series win at Centenary and swept the Gents for the second time in a three-game series since two played as members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The first series sweep by TLU against the Gents came in 2014 at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field. Entering this weekend's series, the Bulldogs were 1-5 against Centenary at SheHee Stadium in SCAC play. With the three-game road sweep, the Bulldogs will take at the minimum a one-game lead (in the loss column) into the final two weeks of SCAC play. The Bulldogs close out SCAC play at home against Austin College and on the road against Schreiner University before heading into the SCAC Tournament in Cleburne, Texas
No. 20 Wheaton (Mass.) completed its NEWMAC sweep of Emerson with a 10-3 victory at Sidell Stadium. Sophomore John Mikosz got the start for the Lyons, going 4.1 innings, which saw him give up just two runs on five hits. First-year Andrew Manni came in in relief, completing 1.2 innings en route to his second win of the season. First-year Zach Demattio finished a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Manni ended the contest 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk. Jack Fox collected the loss for Emerson after 6.1 innings, which saw him give up eight of Wheaton's 10 runs. CJ Beattie had the best plate performance for the Lions, finishing 3-for-4.
A ninth-inning grand slam by Alex Kachler padded a Methodist three-run advantage as the 22nd-ranked Monarchs finished off an 8-0 victory over host William Peace in USA South Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon. Methodist broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third and added two more in the sixth off RBI-at bats from Tucker Criswell and Will May. Christian Yarbrough had already scored on a passed ball in the top of the ninth when Kachler slammed an Austin Padgett offering over the left-field wall. The team's 14 strikeouts tied a team-high. Will Walker added a strikeout in his one inning of work, and Hunter Barnes was magnificent in his inning with all three outs coming by way of Pacer statues called out looking.
