Centre, Birmingham-Southern advance in SSA tourney

Penn State-Abington swept Penn College 19-3, 5-1, to move to 10-1 on the season. The Lions will take on Penn State-Harrisburg this weekend in a clash of NEAC unbeatens.

Centre opened Southern Athletic Association Tournament play against top seed Berry, who entered the tournament ranked no. 13 in the latest D3baseball.com poll. Behind a complete game shutout from Hogan Brownley and a balanced effort on offense, the Colonels cruised to an 8-0 victory in one of their most complete team performances of the season. Brownley pitched the finest game of his career, going the distance and allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four in nine brilliant innings and 118 pitches.
Centre will move on to the winners' bracket in the SAA Tournament. The Colonels will face Birmingham-Southern on Friday at noon. Birmingham-Southern advanced with a 10-0 win over Rhodes.

Messiah team swept a home doubleheader over conference foe Stevenson University. The Falcons won in walk-off fashion in Game One, edging the Mustangs 4-3, and completing the sweep in the second contest, 4-0, behind a complete-game shutout from Josh Monturo. Clayton Roberts was the hero in Game One, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Messiah was down to its final out, and providing the game-winning RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth inning to clinch the victory. Roberts tallied a game-high two RBI in Game One, upping his season total to eight. Sam Zercher contributed a 2-for-3 performance in the second game, notching a game-high two RBI with two doubles. Monturo's complete game was the second of his season, the first time of his career not giving up a run while going the distance, earning his second win of the season. With the strong performance on the mound, the junior pitcher leveled his 2021 record to 2-2.

The University of Mary Washington split its Thursday doubleheader at 14th ranked Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., dropping the opener, 8-2, before winning game two, 11-4. The Eagles move to 5-13 on the season. Randolph-Macon scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 8-2 win. The second game saw the Eagles explode for seven runs in the first inning en route to an 11-4 win. Caleb McAlister was 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Noah Roots went 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

No. 24 William Paterson (17-5, 8-3 NJAC) spotted host Rutgers-Newark (1-10, 1-10 NJAC) a 3-0 first-inning lead before scoring 10 unanswered runs for a 10-3 victory. Matt Ferrara was 3-for-6 while adding a double and three RBI, and Steve Yelin finished 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Junior Jordan Manne improved to 2-2 with 5.0 innings of six-hit, three-run action. He struck out three and walked four. Junior Matt Lawler tossed 2.0 innings and allowed a hit and a walk while registering two strikeouts. Senior Jason Rivera worked the final 2.0 innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Kean University scored the final five runs of the game as the Cougars snapped Montclair State's five-game winning streak and captured the first game of the home-and-home series with a 7-5 victory on Thursday afternoon. Daniel Chiusano (1-2) tossed five scoreless innings in relief as the Cougars (12-8) erased a 5-2 deficit and knocked off the Red Hawks (15-5) for the seventh time in the last eight meetings. Michael Murphy homered and drove in three runs for MSU. In other NJAC action No. 16 Rowan defeated TCNJ 18-2, Rutgers-Camden was a winner over Stockton, and Ramapo came back to defeat New Jersey City 12-11 in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off win.

Case Western Reserve picked up a sweep of a pair of seven-inning games against Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday afternoon, winning 12-8 in the early contest, followed by a 2-1 victory in the second game of the day at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. The Spartans improved to 16-8 on the year with the two wins, including a 10-2 mark in home games. It was the second time this season that CWRU has swept Ohio Wesleyan in a doubleheader, as the Bishops dropped to 2-18 on the year following the two losses. Junior outfielder Cole Jarrett led the way offensively, going four-for-seven at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. First-year third baseman/ pitcher Zack Carinci threw 2.2 scoreless innings and earned saves in both games of the doubleheader.

The University of Northwestern (19-8, 7-1 UMAC) swept Martin Luther College (0-11, 0-6 UMAC) on Thursday evening. The Eagles won game one 8-4 before the bats erupted to the tune of a 24-4 victory in game two. Noah Franzen got the game one start. He gave up three earned runs on the mound and struck out six as he kept the Knights off-balance all night over seven innings. Andrew Simonson and Aaron Severson closed the door in the eighth and ninth. Northwestern stole ten bags in the contest as the Eagles continued to run rampant. Guerin Szafraniec was 4-4 with an RBI to lead the Eagle offense. In game two, Northwestern had 19 hits along with nine walks. Wyatt Morrell reached six times as he had three hits and three walks, drove in three runs, and scored four runs. His third walk tied him for the Northwestern career walks record with 92. Morrell also holds the single-season walks record which he set his freshman year when he drew 43.

Misericordia University increased its winning streak to seven straight games with a 14-1, 9-7 sweep of Delaware Valley, Thursday at Tambur Field. The Cougars improved to 16-7 and moved into a tie for second place in the MAC Freedom. Sean Boylan hit a two-run homer and Owen VanNewkirk hit a three-run double in the opener as the Cougars rolled to an win in the opener. Joe Valenti allowed just four hits over six innings to earn the win. Kyle Kane picked up the win in relief in the nightcap and Tyler Leonard worked two scoreless innings to earn his fifth save. After the Aggies rallied to tie the score in the fifth in game two, the Cougars went back in front on a Randy Mateo's RBI-double in the bottom of the frame and added insurance as the game progressed.

Conor Deasy dealt his second-straight complete game shutout in game one of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Kenyon. The Gators won both games by scores of 4-0 and 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Deasy struck out the last batter swinging to get out of a bases-loaded jam and preserve the win for the Gators. He only surrendered four hits and sent six batters back to the dugout on strikes. Deasy has now pitched 14.2 innings of shutout baseball in three-straight wins dating back to the fifth inning of the 6-4 win over Wooster on April 7. Chase Chodkowski Dalton DuBois and Ryan Dougherty led Allegheny's offense with two hits apiece. Dougherty accounted for two of the Gators' four RBIs.

 

DePauw clubbed four homers including three in the second game on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader sweep of Denison by scores of 5-2 and 12-4. In the opener, the Tigers sealed the win in the sixth as Kyle Callahan led off with a single and came home when Charlie Patrick homered to right center. Cameron Macon then singled and later scored on Fitzgerald's sacrifice fly. In the nightcap, Denison's Will Krushena and Brian McAuliffe hit solo homers in the sixth to trim the DePauw lead to 9-4, but the Tigers added three in the sixth as Patrick singled home Callahan before Macon followed with a two-run homer. Shaw, Patrick and Sheehan each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while McAuliffe had three of Denison's five hits.
