Tufts gets Patriots Day win

SUNY Cobleskill extended their current winning streak to 10 games on Monday afternoon downing the visiting Wildcats of Cazenovia College in North Atlantic Conference action by a 6-1 margin at Fighting Tiger Field. With the victory the Fighting Tigers are now 17-11 overall on the season including an 8-0 record in league action while the Wildcats fall to 7-18 overall with a 2-6 record in NAC play.

Pitchers Brendan McFall and Connor Kinney both made good starts, while Ryan Noone and Kyle Cortese provided clutch offense as the 15th-ranked Tufts University Jumbos swept a doubleheader over UMass Dartmouth 5-2 and 11-5 on Monday at Huskins Field. McFall went the distance on the hill and Noone had a tie-breaking two-run single in the fifth inning in the first game. Kinney pitched six innings to improve to 3-0 in game two while Cortese homered twice. The Jumbos are now 19-6 while the Corsairs dropped to 11-15.

The Westfield State pitching staff allowed just two hits and the Owl offense rapped out 17 hits as they handled the MCLA Trailblazers 10-2 this afternoon from Hagan Field in MASCAC action on Patriots Day. The Owls improve to 14-11 overall and are now 6-4 in conference play. MCLA drops to 10-16 on the season and is 1-8 in league play. Westfield's Ryan Donahue earned the win going a solid six innings. He didn't allow a hit over that span but did walk three batters and struck out 8 Trailblazers. Matt Motyka earned the save by tossing the final three frames. MCLA's Rob Correia took the loss on the mound for the Trailblazers.

Freshman Matthew Fletcher threw five no hit innings in game one and junior Spencer Murphy walked it off in game two as Lasell University Lasers swept the Lesley University Lynx, 4-1 and 4-3, Monday afternoon at Stein Diamond. Freshman Andrew Gryniewicz got the Lynx first hit in the top of the sixth breaking up a no-hitter being thrown by Fletcher. The Lynx used that hit to put a run on the board tying the game up at one. Bischof did not wait long in the bottom half of the inning to untie the game as he led the inning off with a deep solo shot to right field. Freshman Devon Lapierre added two more to the Lasers total as he doubled down the right field line. Freshman Vaun Larisa came in to pitch in the seventh as shut the door as the Lasers took game one 4-1. Lesley jumped out to an early lead in game two and added a second run in the fourth inning before the Lasell offense got going. In a tie game, Lasell got the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth Murphy coming up to bat for his first of the day and he delivered the winning run with a grounder to third and the throw home was dropped by the Lesley catcher allowing Devon Lapierre to slide in and score the winning run in extra innings.

Keystone College split with visiting University of Valley Forge on Monday afternoon in CSAC action, defeating the Patriots in game one, 6-0, before falling in game two, 4-3. The Giants now stand at 12-13 (6-2 CSAC) and the Patriots improve to 6-17 (3-5 CSAC). The Giants tallied 10 hits as Nathan Hinkley tossed six innings for his sixth win of the season, scattering just three hits with seven strikeouts. The righty threw 66 pitches and forced six flyouts and five groundouts. Bobby Pokorney, Chris Hadsall, and Kelly all collected two hits each while Gouldsbury and Abreu tallied two RBI each. The Patriots jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third and held off the Giants in inclement weather, outhitting Keystone 11-10.

Cole Heitzman's RBI single gave Centenary University a walk off game-two win and a doubleheader sweep of Rosemont College on Monday afternoon at Our Diamond of Dreams. Comeback was the name of the game for the Cyclones on Monday. Centenary trailed 2-1 going to the bottom of the fifth in game-one and rallied for the 6-2 win. Game-two saw Rosemont take a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh, but the Cyclones rallied with two runs in their final at-bat for the 5-4 win.

SUNY Oneonta took the rubber match in their conference series over Fredonia 8-4 in 10 innings Monday afternoon at Finger Lakes Community College. The Red Dragons head back home 8-20 overall and 2-10 in the SUNYAC, while the Devils fell to 10-16 overall and 1-11 in conference. Junior Liam Kaseta led Oneonta with four singles and a pair of RBI, and junior Nate Guillen finished 3-for-4 and scored three times. Freshman Anthony Foglia and sophomore Gregory Bandura each had a pair of hits with an RBI and run scored, Foglia also had a triple in the game. Senior Michael Losak earned the win after pitching 9.0 innings, allowing nine hits, four runs, and striking out a career-high 14. Sophomore Kyle Rosenberger pitched the extra inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Husson University scored three runs in three different innings as they defeated the Bowdoin Polar Bears, 11-4, in non-conference action at Pickard Baseball Diamond on Monday afternoon. The Eagles got on the board first as freshman Ty Knowlton doubled in fellow freshman Tanner Evans. Sophomore Jackson Curtis continued his mashing of baseballs in the third inning as he homered for the third time in three games with an opposite field homer to extend the lead. Later in the inning, Evans doubled to right field to score senior Kobe Rogerson and make it 4-0 Husson. Bowdoin would make it a three run game in the eighth but the Eagles would cap off the scoring by adding four runs in the final two innings for the victory. Freshman Connor Abood started the contest for the Eagles as he went three-plus innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Sophomore Chris Naylor was called upon from the bullpen and closed out the game by allowing two runs on eight hits.

Cairn University swept their Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader at home inside the Stillman Complex against Clarks Summit University on Monday, winning 4-1 in game one before claiming a 17-5 victory in the nightcap. Cairn was led offensively in game one by Tyler Fox, classmate Samuel Spadea and senior Joshua Melchior who each notched a pair of hits, while Melchior stole a career-high four bases. Carson Conradt dominated on the hill, tossing a complete game, scattering just four hits, one run and striking out a career-high 13 batters. Senior Caleb Edman paced the Highlander offense in game two with a game-high three hits and a pair of stolen bases, while Melchior added a pair of base knocks. Freshman Jared Sucro scored a career-high four runs in the contest to go along with two stolen bases. Junior Cameron Culver picked up his fifth win of the year on the bump after tossing six innings, scattering four hits, three runs (one earned) and striking out seven.

Plattsburgh State (11-12, 0-6) rode the excellent start from Ryan Lawyer to a convincing 9-2 win over Norwich (13-13, 4-8) on Monday. Lawyer, working in just his second start of the season and career at Plattsburgh, went six strong innings allowing just one run and striking out six to earn his first win. The Cardinals offense also was able to pick up where they left off on Saturday. After scoring 13 runs against Cortland, the most ever against the national powerhouse, the offense was able to rack up 11 hits and scored nine runs to back the strong pitching outing. Steve Messerschmitt continued his hot play as of late, as the graduate student finished 2-5 with four RBIs and a double. Aaron Roman was also swinging a hot stick, as the senior finished 2-3 with two RBIs and runs scored.

Connor Morin broke the NEC career-doubles record, and Shayne Audet retires 13 Monks via a strikeout as New England College took game two 3-0 of the doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Monday afternoon at Laurie Cox Memorial Field. The Monks were victorious in the opener 8-5. New England College started strong, as they opened the game with back-to-back doubles, with Luca Giallongo scoring on Brady Philibotte's double. Saint Joseph's College responded with four runs in the top of the third. The Monk's lead would grow to 8-2, as they scored four more runs in the fifth. The Pilgrims threatened in the bottom of the seventh, as they loaded the bases with no outs in the inning, but they were unable to tie the game. Once again, NEC struck in the first inning but the game was dominated by Shayne Audet. The senior pitcher struck out 13 batters and allowed just one hit. The Monks were only able to get into scoring position twice, but neither of them was able to score. With his second double in game two, Connor Morin surpassed Christian Aybar for the most career doubles at NEC (29).

After sweeping their most recent doubleheader in MASCAC action, the Worcester State Lancers ran their win streak to three games with an 11-6 win over Fitchburg State at Riccards Field on Monday afternoon. With the win, Worcester improves to 6-3 in the conference and 12-11 overall, while Fitchburg drops to 6-23 on the season (2-8 MASCAC). Senior Adam Kirsch pitched four strong innings for the Falcons allowing one run over four innings. Freshman Robert Clarke took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits. Junior Kevin Zarnoch posted his second win of the season, allowing just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over five innings.

Stellar defense and a pair of sterling complete game pitching performances allowed the University of Maine at Farmington to sweep a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Monday at Hippach Field. The Beavers posted a 3-2 win in game one of the twinbill behind Riley Bartell's seven-strikeout performance, and UMaine-Farmington completed the doubleheader sweep with a 2-0 shutout over the Hornets on Aaron Goschke's five-hit four strikeout effort on the mound. In game one, UMaine-Farmington (6-17, 4-4 NAC) scored all three of its runs in the second inning, keyed by Hunter LaBossiere's two-run single to left field. Troy Johnson allowed one run to score earlier in the frame with a base to left field, allowing Tyler Lambert to cross. In game two, the Beavers again combined solid defense with a sparkling pitching effort by Goschke to complete the win. UMaine-Farmington allowed NVU-Lyndon to safely get a base runner as far as third just once in the game, and twice squelched Hornet rallies with inning-ending double plays.

The University of Southern Maine quieted Plymouth State University, 9-0, in a Little East Conference game at Ed Flaherty Field on Monday. The Huskies took advantage of a pair of PSU errors in the third to snag a 3-0 lead, then pushed six runs across in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Plymouth State slips to 10-18 (2-6 LEC), while Southern Maine moves to 12-14 and 5-4 in the Little East. PSU was held to three hits as Southern Maine has been a thorn in the side of the Panthers, winning each of the last eight matchups.

Immaculata split their doubleheader on Monday against Cabrini. The Mighty Macs won game one 4-1 while dropping game two 4-2. The Mighty Macs now stand with an 8-1 record in Atlantic East play with the Cavaliers handing them their first conference loss. The bats were quiet on game one as the Mighty Macs and Cavaliers combined for a total of six hits on the seven-inning contest. Cabrini scored their lone run of the contest in the top of the fifth to cut Immaculata's lead to 3-1. That run was quickly erased in the bottom half of the inning as Joey Sacco reached base on a leadoff single, moving to third on two stolen basesand scoring on an error, giving Immaculata the 4-1 lead. The Cavaliers kicked off scoring in game two, plating two runners fourth and single runs in the seventh and ninth innings. The Macs managed a two spot in the sixth but could not find home plate before or after.

Senior third baseman Jarrad Grossguth hit a homer and notched a walk-off RBI fielder's choice as Rhode Island College defeated Western Connecticut, 13-3, in Little East play on Monday afternoon at Pontarelli Field. RIC exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, paced by Grossguth's three-run home run into deep left field, to build an 8-1 advantage. RIC went into the home half of the seventh up by nine, 12-3, and needing one run to end the game early. Santerre reached on an error, advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt and eventually beat a throw to the plate on Grossguth's grounder to third. Sophomore starting pitcher Terry Murray went six innings, striking out eight and allowing just one earned run in a winning effort (4-1).
