Keystone, Arcadia gets sweep of conference foes

Arcadia captured its second-consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom regular season crown with a doubleheader sweep of Misericordia, the No. 15 team in the latest D3baseball.com national rankings, taking game one 11-2 before earning a 2-1 victory in game two.

Keystone took down St. Elizabeth in a CSAC doubleheader 6-5 and 3-2 to complete the series sweep. With the two wins, Keystone moves to 24-11 (14-1 CSAC). St. Elizabeth falls 13-22 (7-8 CSAC). Keystone was up 5-0 heading into the fifth of game one where St. Elizabeth put up a five spot in that inning to tie the game. The Giants were able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI SAC fly from Chris Hadsall to give Keystone the lead and eventually the win. The Giants only had two hits in game two as Giovanni Diaz led Keystone with two RBI but it was enough. Nathan Hinkley picked up his sixth win on the year as he went six innings with two strikeouts. Dominic Verrastro earned her first save of the season as he struck out two batters in his one inning of relief.

Senior captain Ryan Boyce and junior Lucas Burnette each hit home runs with four RBIs each in game two, as Hampden-Sydney split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on the road at Bridgewater to complete the regular season on Monday in Bridgewater. Senior Owen Tappy gained the pitching win in relief during the 14-9 triumph in the nightcap. Bridgewater drew first blood in game one and gained a 2-0 lead after three innings. The score remained this way until the eighth when the Eagles built a 5-0 advantage. The Tigers attempted to get back in the game but Brett Tharp put down the final H-SC batter on strikes to see the game come to an end, 5-1, in favor of the Eagles.

No. 5 nationally ranked Endicott defeated No. 12 nationally ranked Eastern Conn. St., 4-1, in non-conference action on Monday evening at North Field. Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kyle Grabowski belted a bomb to left field that sent two home for a 3-1 advantage at the time. From there, Nicolas Notarangelo singled to left center to send Caleb Shpur home and add an insurance run for the Gulls in the bottom of the seventh inning. Endicott earned its first in the all-time series versus Eastern Conn. St. (1-3). The Gulls are a 15-0 at The Nest.

Sophomore Eli Somers had a career high five hits, scored two runs, and had two RBI as Stevens Institute of Technology closed out the regular season with a victory over St. Joseph's (L.I.) 13-10 Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Gregg Alfano Field. The Ducks avenged their NCAA Tournament loss to the Golden Eagles. Today's game was a slugfest compared to last year's 2-0 pitching duel. Stevens finishes the regular season with a 26-14 record, along with a 14-10 record in MAC Freedom play. The Ducks already clinched the #4 seed in the MAC Freedom tournament and will take on #5 Wilkes in the tournament's play-in game on Thursday, May 4. Sophomore Liam DeRubertis also tallied a career high in hits with three. He tacked on three RBI and scored a run. Junior Johnny Albrecht and first-year Liam Houghton each tallied two RBI in the contest. The 13 runs scored was the most in a game for the Ducks since March.

Albright (9-29, 2-22 MAC Commonwealth) concluded their 2023 campaign this afternoon in epic fashion dominating Clarks Summit (4-31) at home 16-4. The Lions scored at least one run in six of the eight innings. It was all Albright for the first pitch to the last pitch in today's game. The Albright bats were on fire early scoring eight runs in the first two innings including a six run second inning. Nick Barton and Tommy Lewman both had three hits today. Barton was a double shy of the cycle going for a homerun, triple and a single. Lewman knocked three singles giving him two RBIs on the day.

Springfield clinched a spot in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament following its 6-2 victory at Coast Guard on Monday afternoon. Springfield boosted its record to 14-18-1 overall and 7-9 in the NEWMAC, while the Bears fell to 13-18, 6-10. Cadin Maynard had a 4-for-5 day at the plate while Michael Lepere produced three hits and drove in a pair and Joe Traversa stole three bases. Colby Welch pitched four innings as the Pride's starter and struck out six.

Carleton registered a pair of comeback wins to earn a doubleheader sweep against Hamline at CHS Field. AJ Staff went the distance for the 3-2 win in game one, and Ryan Chang collected five hits on the day, including three in the Knights' 12-5 victory in game two. Staff (2-4) turned in his arguably best performance of the season, limiting the Pipers (10-24, 6-10 MIAC) to two runs—only one earned—over 7.0 innings to get the victory. This was his second complete-game effort of the campaign. The Knights trailed 3-0 and 5-4 but plated the last eight runs of the contest to complete the sweep.

Kean split with Rowan in the regular season finale for both, winning the opener, 11-4 and falling in the nightcap, 4-0. With today's outcomes, the Profs (28-11, 13-5 NJAC) have clinched the top seed in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament, slated to begin on Thursday. The Cougars (23-15-1, 12-5-1 NJAC) have solidified the second seed and will also host a first round tournament game on Thursday. In the opener, Kean took the lead back in the seventh and never relinquished it again as Christian Pellone lofted a two run homer, Kyle Adorno registered an RBI single and Justin Teixeira tallied an RBI with a fielder's choice for a 7-4 lead. Rowan scratched across a single run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Anthony Schooley. Tyler Cannon drove in two with a double in the fifth and Patrick Defeciani rounded out the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth for all of the game's runs.

Elizabethtown got back to their winning ways, Monday with a dominating, 16-5 win over the Scranton Royals. Elizabethtown was quick to act, scoring their first run in the first inning. Elizabethtown recorded four of their eight total doubles in the fifth inning, a team season-high. Etown kept up their momentum scoring six runs on four hits with one error committed by the Royals. Perilli, Joe Limongelli and Watson all recorded RBIs in the inning. After six innings, Etown led Scranton 14-3. Scranton scored their fourth run of the game in sixth off a Blue Jay error. The Blue Jays scored their final two runs in the eighth. Limongelli led off the inning with a single down the left field line and advanced to third on two walks. With the bases loaded, Bertucio hit a two-RBI single to score Schwartbeck and Limongelli. Scranton added one more run in the eighth as Etown led, 16-5.

A walk-off single by sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle with two outs in the 11th inning capped a 7-6 victory as USMMA responded from a 5-3 loss in game one to split a doubleheader against Manhattanville. USMMA saw its record move to 21-13 (9-7 Skyline), while Manhattanville moved to 16-19 (9-7 Skyline). USMMA held a 3-2 lead after five innings in the opener, but Manhattanville plated two in the sixth and one in the seventh to rally past the Mariners, 5-3.  Tied at 5-5 after just three innings in the nightcap, neither team scored again until the 11th when the Valiants plated one run only to see the Mariners score two and win on a two-out walk-off single by Clapsaddle. USMMA pounded out 17 hits in the game as six players recorded multi-hit performances.

Senior catcher Robert Wirtanen and first year Nick Giangregorio each knocked in a pair of runs to lead the No. 11 Wheaton (Mass.) to a 7-3 victory over host Roger Williams this afternoon at Paolino Field in Bristol, R.I. The Lyons have won nine straight, 17 of their last 18 and 27 of their last 29 games and improve to 33-5 on the season for their highest win total since 2012 when they were 41-11. The Hawks fall to 12-22. Both teams scored two runs apiece in the first inning, before Wheaton scored three times in the third to take the lead for good at 5-2. Each side scored a single run in the sixth to make it 6-3, before the Lyons capped the day's scoring with a run in the ninth. Wheaton rapped out 15 hits to mark the 27th time this season that the Lyons have rung up double-digit hit totals.

William Paterson (25-13, 12-6 NJAC) wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a 15-8 New Jersey Athletic Conference home victory over New Jersey City (12-16, 2-16 NJAC) at Jeff Albies Field. The Pioneers broke the game open in the fourth by scoring six two-out runs off eight hits to go ahead, 10-2. The Gothic Knights plated their fourth run of the afternoon in the fifth, but the Pioneers got it right back in the bottom half of the frame after loading the bases and drawing a two-out walk. NJCU trimmed the deficit to seven, 15-8, after a three-run eighth inning, but that would be as close as the Gothic Knights would get as the Pioneers secured the conference win.

On the final day of the 2023 regular season, Haverford (19-19, 9-9 CC) secured its spot in the Centennial Conference tournament with a resounding 10-5 win over Swarthmore (20-17-1, 9-8-1 CC) Monday at Maple Zone Sports Institute. The contest was played on the Maple Zone Turf in Aston due to the rainy weather over the weekend that made Kannerstein Field unavailable. Haverford scored nine runs in the first three innings to help guide senior Josh Fuller to victory on the mound. One of the biggest hits on the day came from Daniel Rosman, as Rosman drilled a bases-clearing double in his second at-bat of the first inning to put Haverford ahead 7-0. For the day, Rosman, Jonny Flieder, and Zach Becker all tallied two-hit contests.

No. 23 UW-Stevens Point (25-9, 15-5) completed the four-game sweep of UW-Eau Claire (7-22, 1-17) on Monday to climb into a three-way tie for first place heading into the final weekend of WIAC play. The Pointers won game one, 8-3, before completing the sweep with a 7-4 win in game two. Jakob Boos continued to thrash UWEC pitching with four hits, including a grand slam. He had four RBI and two runs scored on the day. Sidney Ferry became the UWSP all-time saves leader but posting two perfect innings, including three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth. Brenden Canterbury, Bradley Comer and Logan Homolka each had a two-hit game on the day.

Rain is a good thing! At least the wet and cold weather was for the Bobcats on Monday as the team's bats came alive, scoring 27 runs and recording 27 hits in a doubleheader, 9-3 and 18-7, against the Panthers of Pitt-Bradford. With the sweep, the Bobcats clinched the No. 4 seed in the AMCC Playoffs and, in turn, will host the Hilbert Hawks this weekend at Bobcat Park for the first home playoff series since 2017. In game one the Bobcats came out hot as Pitt-Greensburg took a 6-1 lead after two innings. Michael Sullivan Jr. pitched a great game as he pitched seven innings and recorded five strikeouts. Sullivan gave up just three earned runs. Freshman James Domer went 3-for-3 with threw runs scored and two RBI. Senior Jace Cappellini and sophomore Jaycob Caseras also had multiple RBIs in the game. The Bobcats were playing through the rain in game two and put a hurting on the Bradford pitching, recording 16 hits, seven for extra bases, and had an 8-0 lead after two innings. The Panthers battled back to bring the game withing three runs, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats ten-runned the Panthers after seven innings. Freshman Neo Miller had three of the seven extra base hits on his own, with three doubles. Another note from this series was the James Domer became the single-season RBI King as he now has 53 on the season. The previous record was 51 held by Garrett Herald in 2012.
