Wheaton (Mass.) earned a spot in the national championship game with its 13-8 win over St. Thomas on Monday in the Division III World Series.

Cortland State, Marietta, and St. Thomas all entered the day with a shot for the final spot against Wheaton (Mass.). And only Cortland State was eliminated.

St. Thomas sent the Red Dragons home. The Red Dragons put up four runs in the fifth, powered by back-to-back triples by Max Rosing and Michael LaTempa, taking a 4-2 lead. That evaporated, however, when St. Thomas scored two in the bottom of the inning and two in the next inning to take a 6-4 lead. St. Thomas added an insurance run which they cashed in when Cortland's rally fell a run short. St. Thomas advances to the first game Wednesday with the 7-6 win.

The Wheaton (Mass.) fell behind early to Marietta but with runs in the fourth and fifth inning, the Lyons built a 3-1 lead over the defending national champions. Mike McGinnis, the Wheaton starter, got into trouble in the sixth inning, surrendering three runs as Marietta retook the lead 4-3. Wheaton won the seventh inning 2-1 to tie the game, but Marietta took advantage of an apparent blown call on an attempted sacrifice bunt, then drew a bases-loaded walk to defeat the Lyons 6-5.

St. Thomas and Marietta will square off at 11 a.m. Wednesday, while Wheaton awaits the winner.
