Washington & Jefferson and Concordia-Chicago opened the Division III World Series. Nick Gatins was 3-for-5, with two RBIs and Bryce Schnatterly pitched effectively to lead Washington and Jefferson to a 4-2 win over Concordia-Chicago.
"We are happy with the end result," said W&J coach Jeff Mountain. "I liked the way our guys competed. You never know how things are going to go. I thought our guys handled everything. I thought we played with a good amount of confidence and with a good amount of poise."
The Presidents know who they will play, and it will be the upstart Roanoke Maroons. The Maroons stunned tournament favorite Oswego State 8-7 as the Lakers left the tying run on second when the final out was recorded.
Game three saw the Cardinals and Beacons matched in an old-fashioned pitchers' duel as both teams flashed the leather and went though seven tied 2-2. UMB broke through with a tally in the sixth to regain the lead but North Central answered in the next half-inning, then added three in the eighth and held on to win 5-2 behind a complete game by Austin Polezoes.
Cal Lutheran got an impressive performance from starting pitcher Marshall Pautsch, as he went eight-plus innings, striking out 10 before yielding to Miguel Salud who struck out three more to pick up his 12th save of the season.
