Pitching Propels Warhawks to Sweep of Superior

More news about: UW-Whitewater

Solid pitching from starting pitchers Riley Tincher and Jeff Donovan propelled UW-W to a doubleheader sweep of UW-Superior on Sunday in Whitewater.  Tincher held the 'Jackets scoreless in a 3-0 victory in game one, while Donovan only gave up two runs in a 15-2 route in game two.  UW-W is now 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while Superior falls to 3-10 and 0-4.

Tincher needed little run support as he cruised through game one, and although they didn't need to score more than one run to win the game, UW-W scored three.

The 'Hawks got their first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Donovan and added two more in the bottom of the seventh; one on an RBI single by Dave Cladis and the other on an RBI single by Daniel Putnam.

Tincher did the rest.  He faced one over the minimum through eight before giving up three hits in the ninth, but even then he managed to get out of the inning with the bases loaded giving up zero runs.  In total he faced 31 batters, struck out 11, walked none and gave up just five hits in the complete game shutout.  Tincher threw the first complete game by a Warhawk pitcher this season and improved his ERA to 1.80 in four appearances, all starts.  He is 4-0 this season.

Game two featured another stellar pitching performance, this time by Donovan.  Donovan went 1-2-3 in the first three innings striking out four of the nine batters he faced.

By the fourth inning UW-W had already compiled a 4-0 lead thanks to an RBI single in the second by Putnam and three runs in the third coming from a Matt Beyer sacrifice fly, a superior error and an RBI Cladis single.

Superior did push one run across in the fourth, unearned, after a Warhawk error kept the inning alive.

With a three run lead in the bottom of the fourth, the 'Hawks tacked on three more to go ahead 7-1 courtesy of an RBI grounder by Wessels and an error by UW-Superior that allowed both Wessels and Donovan to score.

Another run in the fifth widened UW-W's lead to 8-1.  A run by Superior in the seventh, again unearned, was all the Yellowjackets could muster before giving up six more runs to Whitewater in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

Donovan pitched seven innings, gave up five hits, two runs, zero earned, walked one, and struck out nine to earn his fourth victory of the season.  Tom Kerndt pitched an inning and two-thirds giving up one hit and Rob Coe pitched the last out of the game.

Putnam extended his team leading hitting streak to thirteen games and drove in three runs on the day.  Andrew Eichstaedt went 3-for-7 and has now hit safely in nine straight games.  Donovan, who had the best statistical day at the plate, went 4-for-9 with two RBIs and three runs and also boasts an eight game hitting streak.

The Warhawks will travel to UW-Stevens Point on April 9 and 10 for doubleheaders beginning at noon on both days.  UW-W will next play at home on April 13 when they host UW-Platteville in a twinbill beginning at 1:00 at Prucha Field.
