Warhawks Split Low Scoring Twinbill

More news about: UW-Whitewater

A day after UW-Whitewater totaled 21 runs in two games, they scored just two in a doubleheader split with UW-La Crosse Saturday at Prucha Field in Whitewater.  The Warhawks lost game one 3-1 but won game two 1-0 in thirteen innings. UW-W is 29-9 overall and they finish Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a record of 18-6 and earn the second seed in the three team, double-elimination WIAC tournament that will take place May 13 and 14 in Stevens Point, the 2011 champion.  The winner of the tournament earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.  UW-L finishes the season 24-15 overall and 12-12 in WIAC.

Game one saw UW-L take a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single up the middle.  UW-W retaliated in the eighth to knot the score on a bases loaded situation where Jared Fon (Germantown) was hit by a pitch.

The Eagles plated two in the top of the ninth to regain the lead at 3-1 on a two RBI single by third baseman Brett Jacobson.

UW-W was unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and suffered just their second loss at home this season.

The Warhawks only tallied four hits in the game to La Crosse's ten.  Neither team committed an error.

Game two was a pitching duel to the end.  Both starters pitched nine plus innings and neither gave up a run.  Garrett Scray threw eleven innings for the Eagles and surrendered just seven hits while walking none and striking out five.  UW-W's Jack Larsen (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) hurled nine innings, gave up only four hits, walked one, and struck out five.

Larsen gave way to Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac), who picked up the win after pitching four no-hit innings and striking out three.  Scray was removed for Zach Lauersdorf who earned the loss after giving up a double to Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) in the thirteenth who later came around to score on a Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) single to right center.

The walk-off win is the second of the season for UW-W, both in extra innings.

Daniel Putnam (Ashland /Ashland), Wessels and Beyer were the only Warhawks to record multiple hits for the day.

UW-W will play again on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader against Concordia University (WI) beginning at 1:00 at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium in Whitewater.
