'Hawks Eclipse 30 Wins in Doubleheader Sweep of Concordia

More news about: UW-Whitewater

For the fourth year in a row the UW-Whitewater baseball team has won thirty or more games in a season, eclipsing that mark Tuesday in a doubleheader sweep of Concordia University (Wisconsin), 8-6 and 11-0 (7 innings) at Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium in Whitewater.  UW-W rounds out the regular season with an overall record of 31-9 while Concordia falls to 18-21.

In game one the Warhawks used an Andrew Eichstaedt (Appleton/North) RBI single to go up 1-0 in the second and increased their lead to 5-0 after four with a two RBI double by Eichstaedt, again, and another two RBI hit by Logan Peot (Green Bay/Bayport).

Concordia inched closer to the Warhawks with four runs in the top of the fifth.  The first two runs were scored on first baseman Dan Shea's eighth homer of the season, the third on an RBI ground out, and the last on a single by Matt Schilter.

A sacrifice fly by Sam Keller Jr. (Milwaukee/Riverside) gave the Warhawks a two run cushion going into the sixth but the Falcons tied things up after scoring two runs on a single with a fielding error in their half of the sixth.

UW-W regained the lead when Keller homered over the left field fence in the seventh and added another insurance run in the eight on an RBI single by Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker).

With a two-run lead going into the ninth the Warhawks called on Riley Tincher (Oregon/Oregon), making his first relief appearance of the season, to finish the game and earn the save.

UW-W pitched by committee in game one, using four pitchers, striking out six, walking three and giving up seven hits and six runs.  Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) earned the victory and improved to 2-0.

Game two also saw the Warhawks go up big to start, but this time they never relinquished that lead.  A seven run first paced UW-W as they would go on to score four more runs in the later innings and win 11-0 in just seven innings by the run differential rule.

In the first UW-W was efficient to say the least, scoring those seven runs on just three hits and one error.  They were aided by two hit batsmen, three walks and an error.  The biggest blow, in terms of the Falcons' confidence, were back to back plate appearances by UW-W with the bases loaded and runs scoring with no hit.  The first time Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced to drive in a run and the second time was when Dylan Friend (Burlington) was walked on the next at bat.  Steven Bartlein also delivered in the inning, driving in two on a single to left field.

A run in the bottom of the third, two more in the fifth, and one more in the sixth brought the final tally to 11-0.

Again, UW-W pitched by committee using four pitchers, including Riley Tincher's second appearance of the afternoon.  Tincher picked up the win to raise his record to 9-2.  This time the four pitchers combined for a four hit shutout, striking out five and walking just one.

For the day Concordia hit eleven Warhawk batters, walked ten, and struck out just two.

Head coach John Vodenlich used a variety of players in the regular season doubleheader finale and had eleven different players record a hit and five of them recorded multiple hits.

The Warhawks are off until Friday when they travel to UW-Stevens Point to face UW-Oshkosh at 10:00 in the first game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.  The three team tournament, including the host school, will take place over Friday and Saturday with the tournament champion receiving the automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III baseball tournament.
