OSWEGO, N.Y. - A three-run eighth inning helped the Oswego State baseball team (12-15, 3-5 SUNYAC) erase five errors and earn a 6-4 come-from-behind SUNYAC win over New Paltz (16-11, 3-5) at Laker Baseball Field on Friday.

After a pair of errors by Oswego State allowed New Paltz to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Lakers were able to put together the game-winning rally in the bottom half of the same frame.

David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Matt Miller (Sr., Montoursville, N.Y.) each drew one-out walks and Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) made the Hawks pay with a single to center that scored Mazullo and tied the game at four.

The Lakers quickly broke the tie when Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.) laced a double down the left field line to bring in pinch runner Dylan Parmenter (Jr., Bennington, Vt.) for a 5-4 advantage.

Oswego State added one insurance run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.), scoring Jurczynski before the inning ended.

Mark Schaper (Sr., Warwick, N.Y.) closed out the win with a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. Schaper struck out the final two hitters of the game.

The late rally earned Jon Stevens (Jr., Chittenango, N.Y.) the victory. The Laker ace went eight innings with two strikeouts and zero walks. Stevens gave up one earned run, pushing his season ERA up to 0.91 with a 5-1 record. 

The game started on a high note for the Lakers when they took advantage of one of two errors by the Hawks in the game.

Scott Buniak (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) reached on a dropped third strike with two outs. That was followed by back-to-back singles by Mazzullo and Matt Miller (Sr., Montoursville, Pa.), which brought in Buniak. The Hawks then made an error in the infield, allowing Mazzullo to score for a 2-0 lead.

The Lakers turned one of three double plays in the top of the second to keep New Paltz scoreless. However, the Hawks broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the third and added another unearned run in the fourth.

Oswego State was able to tie the game quickly in the bottom of the fourth when Jurzynski doubled and scored on a single by Charles.

New Paltz broke the tie in the top of the eighth with one out, but the Lakers limited the damage by throwing another runner out at home following a ground ball. Stevens forced another ground ball two batters later to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

The late defensive effort was enough to spark the offense for the 6-4 win.

Jurzynski and Charles each finished with two hits to lead the offense with Charles driving in two runs.

Jake Cameron paced New Paltz at the dish by going for 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Steven Morse went 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Anthony Repetto went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Andrew Grann suffered the loss going eight innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked three.

Both squads play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
