OSWEGO, N.Y. – A three-run eighth inning for SUNY Oswego (12-15, 3-5 SUNYAC) vaulted the Lakers to a 6-4 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team (16-11, 3-5 SUNYAC) on Friday afternoon at Laker Field. Senior first baseman Jake Cameron (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) paced the Hawk attack with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and an RBI.

The Lakers got on the board first, scoring two runs in the home half of the first. A passed ball off a strikeout—which should have been the third out of the inning—kept the inning alive for Oswego, and David Mazzullo plated the first run in the ensuing at-bat off an RBI single. Mazzullo would come around to score on a muffed throw by the first baseman, and the Lakers took a 2-0 lead.

New Paltz tied the game in the third, as junior shortstop Steven Morse (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) pushed across both junior center fielder Matt Carr (Westbury, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) and sophomore left fielder Anthony Repetto (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) off a single. The Hawks took their first lead of the contest in the fourth after Repetto drove in a run off a single to center field, but the Lakers responded in the home half of the inning, as Ed Charles scored Alex Jurczynski to knot the tally at 3-all.

After Cameron's no-out, RBI double in the top of the eighth gave the Hawks a 4-3 advantage, the Lakers erupted for three runs in the eighth to provide the eventual margin of victory. Oswego received an RBI single from Jurczynski, an RBI double from Brian Hamilton and a sacrifice fly from Charles in sequence to take the 6-4 lead. Mark Schaper came in to close the game in the ninth and retired the side in order, earning his fifth save of the year.

Sophomore pitcher Andrew Grann (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) was charged with the loss, as he yielded six runs—four of which were earned—off seven hits and three walks while striking out six over eight innings of work. Grann's record fell to 5-3 with the setback. Oswego's Jon Stevens moved to 5-1 for the year, as he scattered 11 hits and permitted four runs—one of which was earned—while striking out two.

Beyond Cameron, Morse batted 2-for-5 with two RBI, a double and a run scored, while Repetto went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. For the Lakers, Jurczynski led the way with a 2-for-4 outing that included two runs scored and an RBI. Charles drove in two runs in his 2-for-2 performance, while Mazzullo scored twice.

The two teams will finish out the three-game set tomorrow at Laker Field, as they square off in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
