In game one Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth to give the Warhawks a 12-1 lead and end the game early by virtue of the ten-run rule. Bartlein was 2-for-5 in the game with six RBIs. Bartlein's six RBIs is a season high for the Warhawks and he now has three games this season with multiple RBIs.
Three other Warhawks went yard in the game: Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker), Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) and Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Darien). Gonzalez and Beyer went back-to-back in the second. UW-W also recorded three doubles in the game.
UW-W scored a run in every inning except the seventh and had seventeen hits in the game. All but one Warhawk starter recorded a hit and six collected multiple hits. Leading the way for the Warhawks were Friend, who was 4-for-4, Beyer, 3-for-4, and Bartlein, who went 2-for-5 with six RBIs.
Kyle Stewart (Onalaska/Onalaska) improved to 7-0 with the win, going eight innings and giving up just one run on six hits while striking out seven and walking two. Stewart's only hiccup was in the top of the third when he gave up back-to-back doubles to start the inning. Stewart leads the Warhawks with 47 strikeouts this season.
Game two went a little differently. UW-Stout jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two. The Warhawks responded scoring eight unanswered runs to go up 8-4 after six. Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) doubled in one, Jared Fon (Germantown) doubled in two and one more was scored on an error in the third. Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) singled in two and Bartlein singled in one more in the fifth, and Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) doubled in one in the sixth.
Stout got one run back in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun by Ben Yaucher to right field, but UW-W returned the favor in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center by Fred Gromalak (Kettle Moriane/Kettle Moraine) that scored JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek).
Down 9-5 in the top of the eighth Stout rallied to score three runs to make it 9-8, but the Warhawks extended their lead to 11-8 in the bottom of the eighth on a solo shot by Fon and a bases loaded walk.
Colin Grove (Beloit/Beloit Memorial) got the Blue Devils out 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to end the game and preserve the weekend sweep.
Eric Schmitz (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) pitched seven innings for UW-W and earned the win to improve to 4-1 this season. He gave up twelve hits and seven runs while walking two and striking out four.
The Warhawks hit into three double plays in the game to Stout's one, but countered with four doubles and a homerun.
For the doubleheader Bartlein was 4-for-8 with two runs scored and seven RBIs. Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) went 6-for-9 with two runs and two runs batted in. Jared Fon (Germantown), along with Friend, had a double in each game and went 4-for-10 with one run and four RBIs.
The Warhawks will host St. Scholastica Tuesday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
