After giving up twenty runs in two wins over UW-Superior yesterday, Warhawk pitching buckled down to get two more wins Saturday to complete the series sweep of the Yellowjackets.  UW-W won game one 18-1 in seven innings and game two 8-2.  UW-W, now 26-13 overall, finishes the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season in second place with a 16-8 record.  UW-S finishes the season 17-22 overall and 8-16 in the WIAC and will not advance to postseason play.

Superior scored first in the bottom of the first in game one to take a 1-0 lead, but that was it for them.  Michael Huckabay(Jefferson/Jefferson) shut them down for the next six innings giving up just three hits and one run while striking out eleven and walking three.  Huckabay moves to 2-1 with the victory.

The offense for the Warhawks was potent in game one.  An eight-run second put the Yellowjackets in UW-W's rearview mirror.  Fred Gromalak (Kettle Moriane/Kettle Moraine) recorded the first RBI of the game for UW-W with a single to left that scored Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee).  Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) drew a bases loaded walk for an RBI and the second run by UW-W.  Jared Fon (Germantown) followed with a single that scored two and gave the Warhawks a 4-1 lead.  Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls)singled up the middle on the next at bat to drive in another and an error on the next at bat scored the sixth run of the frame.  Bartlein, up for the second time in the inning, singled to score two more and give UW-W an 8-1 lead before the Yellowjackets could escape the inning.

Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) homered in the top of the fourth to plate himself and Leavitt and extend the Warhawk lead to 10-1.

Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) singled in David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) in the top of the fifth for another run and Leavitt homered to left field in the sixth for a 12-1 lead.

UW-W slammed the door shut in the top of the seventh scoring six more runs.  A bases loaded double by Travis Wessels(Tomah/Tomah) highlighted the inning.  Gromalak and Mierow each collected an RBI in the inning as well.

Huckabay struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game early by virtue of the ten-run rule after seven innings.

Every Warhawk starter recorded a hit and a run in game one and all but one recorded an RBI.

Game two didn't have tbahe offensive firepower of game one, but it had enough, and it also featured solid pitching, again by the Warhawks.

UW-W opened up the game with a 2-0 lead.  Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and came in to score on a Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Darien) double to left center.  Two batters later Leavitt singled to right and Gonzalez scored.

The Yellowjackets homered in the bottom of the first to come within one at 2-1.

In the third Gonzalez and Herum hit back-to-back doubles to give UW-W a 3-1 lead, and two batters later Herum scored on a Bartlein single for a 4-1 lead.

Herum recorded an RBI in the top of the fourth on a single that plated Mierow to push the Warhawks ahead 5-1 but UW-S struck back with a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2.

Brandon Egnarski (Watertown/Watertown) hit his first collegiate homerun in the top of the fifth to give UW-W a 6-2 advantage.  Two more runs in the top of the ninth made it 8-2 and finished the scoring for both teams in the game.

Colin Grove (Beloit/Beloit Memorial) got the start, went four innings, gave up two runs and got the win, his first of the season.  Kyle Stewart(Onalaska/Onalaska) pitched four and two thirds of hitless baseball recording seven strikeouts, and Jack Larsen (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) came in to get the final out.

Bartlein had a big day at the dish going 5-for-9 with three runs batted in and one run while Herum added three more RBIs to his team leading total of 51.

The Warhawks will finish their regular season schedule with a single game in Mequon, Wisconsin against Concordia University on Tuesday, May 8 at 1:00 pm.  UW-W will then enter the WIAC tournament as the two seed beginning on Friday.  The Warhawks will face-off with UW-Stevens Point, the three seed, at 1:00 pm at UW-La Crosse.  UW-La Crosse earned the right to host the tournament by earning the regular season title.  The tournament will cover two days with the winner earning the conference's automatic berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament.  UW-W is 20-19 all-time in the WIAC tournament and has won the tournament three times (2003, 2004, 2010).
