UW-La Crosse Advances in WIAC Tournament

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 10-0 victory (eight innings) over UW-Oshkosh Friday afternoon at North Campus Field in the opening game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament.  The Eagles improve to 31-9 on the season and advance to the winner's bracket of the tournament.  UW-L, ranked 12th on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Poll, will play Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m.  The Titans fall to 14-22 on the year and will play in an elimination game Friday at 4 p.m.

Tim Verthein (6-4) earned the complete-game shutout for UW-L.  He pitched 8.0 innings, allowing five hits and five walks while striking out five.

UW-L took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Trevor Burmeister scored on Corey Geary's single.  Cole Cefalu followed with an RBI double to knock in Geary.

The Eagles made it 3-0 in the fourth inning on Jay Fanta's solo home run.  In the fifth, UW-L scored three unearned runs with two outs.  Geary reached on a UW-Oshkosh fielding error followed by a walk to Cefalu.  Brooks Braga then hit a three-run home run to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead.

UW-L added three runs in the sixth.  Zach Harazin doubled to score Fanta while Brett Jacobson and Harazin later scored on a fielding error.  The Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the eighth on Geary's bases-loaded single.

Eight of nine starters had a hit for UW-L, including Harazin and Geary who each finished 2-for-4 with two run scored.  Geary also had two RBI and Harazin one.  Braga had three RBI and Fanta finished with two runs scored.

James Lacy (2-4) took the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 7.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, 10 runs (five earned) and four walks with one strikeout.

Tyler Kamps was 2-for-3 for the Titans.
