LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 20, 2016) - Rutgers University-Newark was defeated by Occidental College by a score of 4-1 Sunday in Los Angeles in a non-conference baseball game.

The Scarlet Raiders will head back East with a record of 5-8, while Occidental runs its winning streak to 13 games and is now 15-4 overall. Newark went 3-5 in California, scoring 24 runs in three triumphs, and suffering a trio of one-run defeats.

R-N returns to action Thursday when the Scarlet Raiders host Baruch College at Riverfront Stadium. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.

Rutgers-Newark played tough against a Tiger team that has now swept four-straight three-game sets, and held Oxy under five runs in all three contests - the only three times that has happened since February 20.

Senior Cameron Dias and sophomore Justin Marks were responsible for all five of the Scarlet Raiders' hits as Dias went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Marks was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind 2-0 early as Oxy scored single runs in the first and second, and that score remained the same until Dias led off the seventh with a single and came around to score on Marks' double.

Occidental answered by scoring two runs off the Scarlet Raider bullpen in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, and the guests were only able to put one runner on in the final two frames.

Senior Ryan MacFarlane went the first six innings for Rutgers and was solid despite taking the loss. The veteran scattered six hits and struck out five, giving up just the two early runs. Senior Billy Taylor was charged with two runs (one earned) on three hits in one inning, and sophomore Greg Sampson tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

Freshman Will Martel earned the win on the mound for Occidental, going nine innings and allowing five hits to improve to 4-0.

Marks' two hits marked the ninth time in 13 games this season in which he has two or more hits, and the second-year standout now has a 12-game hitting streak. He has been on base in every contest this season (13) and is hitting .434 with a .736 slugging percentage.
