#21 Marietta downs #25 La Roche, falls to Thomas More

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 21 Marietta College played two games on Sunday (Mar. 25) afternoon against two different teams winning the first and losing the second. The Etta Express defeated No. 25 La Roche College, 7-6, in 10 innings and then lost to Thomas More College, 10-3, in the second game.

The Pioneers are now 11-4 on the season. La Roche is also 11-4 overall, while Thomas More improves to 5-7 on the season.

Geoff Snyder lined a bases loaded single of the left field fence in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Marietta the walk-off victory over La Roche.

Brady Cottom reached on an error by the Redhawk second baseman to start the inning. Eddie Poster walked and then pinch hitter Connor Golden dropped down a sac bunt, but Cottom beat the throw to third loading the bases for Snyder.

La Roche forced the extra frame with three runs in the top of the eighth inning off of Pioneer closer Michael Barnabei. Trailing 6-3, the Redhawks loaded the bases with a walk, a single and another walk to start the inning.

Back-to-back squeeze bunts from Christian Hirt and Gino Quahliero made it 6-5. And then Jonathan Spina tied the game with an infield single to shortstop.

Barnabei (1-0) got the win. He threw 3.0 innings and gave up three runs on four hits with four walks and one strikeout. Dalton Wiggins started and threw 7.0 strong innings. Wiggins allowed three runs, one earned, on seven hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Regis Sauer started for La Roche and worked 5.0 innings. He was charged with three runs on five hits. Sauer walked one and struck out 10 Pioneers. Nick Tunstall gave up three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Garren Telesz (0-2) took the loss giving up the one unearned run on one hit in 1.0 inning of work.

Chris Petrucci went 3-for-4 a double, two runs batted in and two stolen bases. Shane Fetsko and Jonathan Pingree each had two hits, while Cottom scored twice.

In the second game, Thomas More touched up the Pioneer pitchers for 10 run on 15 hits. The Saint scored two runs in the first and third innings and then broke the game open with five runs in the fifth.

While the offense was firing on all cylinders, Jordan Houze (2-0) was turning in an outstanding performance on the mound. He went the distance throwing 9.0 innings and giving up three runs on just six hits. Houze walked five and struck out four.

Austin Eaton (1-1) started and took the loss for Marietta. He threw 4.1 innings and allowed nine runs on 11 hits. Eaton walked one and struck out four. Gavin Linkous, Easton Berry and Jacob Baker all threw in relief for the Pioneers.

Mike Hale drove in two of Marietta's runs in the game including an RBI double in the third. Seamus Kenneally added an RBI double in the sixth inning.

Marietta hosts No. 9 Frostburg State University Monday (Mar. 26) for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. at Don Schaly Stadium.
