LA VERNE, Calif. — Cody Norman allowed just three hits in the opener, the Leopards scored 13 runs in game two, and the University of La Verne baseball team earned a pair of wins over the Occidental College Tigers Saturday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.
Season Impact: With the wins, the Leopards move to 18-10 overall and 9-3 in the SCIAC. La Verne currently sits in second place in the conference. The Tigers fall to 15-11 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
Game One: La Verne 3, Occidental 0
Norman was stellar on the mound. The Vacaville native earned the complete game win finishing with a career-high 14 strikeouts and just one walk. The sophomore faced just 30 batters in the shutout on the way to his third win on the hill this season.
The Leopards got on the board in the first when Jakob Thomas scored after an error by the Tigers.
La Verne scored an insurance run in the sixth when Brandon Vogel hit in Nicholas Michaels. Christopher Ligot extended the lead to 3-0 in the seventh when he doubled to left center to score Rudy Casarez III.
Will Martel took the loss for Occidental.
Game Two: La Verne 13, Occidental 3 (8 innings)
The Leopards jumped on the Tigers in the eighth, scoring nine runs in the inning to earn their second win of the day.
La Verne took advantage of six walks in the inning. Christopher Peres doubled off the right-center wall to bring in Grant Thompson and Ligot to put La Verne up 12-3.
Mauricio Guadarrama ended the game when he singled in Michaels.
Catcher Adam Santa Cruz, Peres, and Guadarrama each totaled two RBI. Lukas Granado went 2-3 at the plate.
Nine different Leopards registered hits.
Hayden Firth picked up the win, stepping in for one and one-third innings of relief. Peres pitched the top of the eighth to get the save.
Nolan McCarthy took the loss for Oxy.
Next Series: The Leopards next face the Redlands Bulldogs. La Verne hosts Redlands next Friday at 3 p.m. and then travels east on Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader.
