Wheaton finally gets win over Marietta

In a rematch of the 2012 National Championship game, Wheaton (Mass.) got a little revenge with an 8-5 victory over Marietta Saturday afternoon. The No. 3 ranked Lyons improve to 5-3 on the season, while the No. 2 ranked Pioneers finish their southern trip with a 7-3 overall record. Wheaton junior Alec Palioca, who took the loss against Marietta in the National Championship game, kept the Pioneer hitters off balance for 7.0 innings to earn the win. Palioca gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

No. 24 Johns Hopkins tallied two runs in the first and that was all Carter Burns needed to guide the Blue Jays to a 3-1 win over Edgewater. Burns pitched a complete game for the win, scattering six hits.

Behind a 15th consecutive quality start in USA South play, No. 4 Christopher Newport picked up its fifth conference series win with a 7-1 win over Piedmont. Rookie Brandon Taylor was behind the bulk of the stellar pitching effort, allowing just three singles in seven innings of work. The freshman was in a rhythm from the outset, retiring the side in order five out of the first six innings. The only blemish was a second-inning single through the left side by Kevin D'Antignac, as Taylor faced just one batter more than the minimum through the first 18 outs.

No. 6 Salisbury stretched its season-long winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of York, 6-2 and 6-3, to open their CAC competition at the SU Baseball Field. Andrew Levy pitched seven innings in game one for his second complete game of the season. Levy scattered eight hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out a season-high-tying seven. Brett Collacchi tossed six innings of five-hit baseball. He allowed three runs (two earned), while fanning five and walking two to help Salisbury to the sweep.

Junior Joe Staab went 3-for-5 with Heidelberg's only two RBI in a 2-1 win over No. 21 Manchester. Senior Bryce Murphy took the loss when the 'Berg scored an unearned run in the ninth inning. Murphy was the leading hitter for the Spartans with two base hits.

Jonathan Hall went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead the way for the Tigers in the nightcap against Dallas.

Trinity's seventh-ranked baseball team swept a SCAC doubleheader at the University of Dallas, winning 3-1 and 10-2. Ryan Lucero allowed just one run, his first in three games, on four hits in the complete game effort. He also recorded his 200th career strikeout with four in today's game. In game two, Trinity's offense hammered out 13 hits on its way to 10 total runs. That proved to be plenty for first-year starter Andrew Alig.

No. 17 Birmingham-Southern used solid pitching and a couple of key hits to earn a 3-1 Southern Athletic Association win over Oglethorpe at Striplin Field. Starter Ralls Pennington pitched five innings with three strikeouts and gave up one run on two hits to earn the win. Nordgren gave up only one hit with three strikeouts in three scoreless innings pitched and Blake Yance closed things out in the ninth to earn his third save.

Illinois Wesleyan defeated No. 10 UW-Whitewater 4-0 on a neurral field in Saint Louis, Missouri. The Titans scored all four runs in the fourth inning, when they combined five singles, a Warhawk error and a sacrifice. IWU junior Jeff Johnson pitched the complete game shutout to pick up his first win of the season. Titans also downed host Fontbonne 16-6 later in the day for a sweep.

Rowan edged number one ranked Cortland State, 5-4 on at Lake Sumter Community College. Right-hander Jeff White earned the win on the mound. White went six innings and gave up six hits and four earned runs. He struck out four batters. Nick Henderson earned the save.  On Friday, Rowan lost 12-8 against Cortland.

Jordan Harlow punched a clutch two-out, two-run, eighth-inning single into right field to push No. 11 Linfield to a late lead, and Linfield held on for a tight game two win to cap off a NWC doubleheader sweep of Whitman at Roy Helser Field. Jake Wylie led the way offensively, posting a line of 4-for-7 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Kramer Lindell went 3-for-6 with a double and two stolen bases, and Tim Wilson went 3-for-6 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored for the Wildcats. Linfield assumed sole possession of first place in the NWC with a conference record of 7-1.

No. 20 Texas-Tyler bounced back from a tough Friday-evening loss to Texas-Dallas, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 3-2, with Texas-Tyler grabbing the pitching edge. Jordan Marah was stellar on the day, striking out eight batters and allowing just three hits and one run, which was unearned. In game two, starter Jack Barkley went 6.2 in the win, while Josh Holley, Matt Sheppard and Derek Miller each had a role in the win, with Miller picking up his seventh save of the season.
