Conference races tighten up

Senior Hayden Cornwell belted a three-run home run and went on to drive in six runs in the game to help MIT overcome and early deficit and score a 12-4 victory over Wheaton (Mass.) in NEWMAC action on Friday. The win pulled the Engineers to just a half game behind the Lyons in the NEWMAC East Division standings.

Texas-Tyler and Concordia (Texas) played a historic game on Friday night, with the Patriots outlasting the first-place Tornados 8-6 in 16 innings played. The game lasted five hours and 30 minutes and set several new conference and team records, including a combined 46 strikeouts by the pitching staffs. The game would feature seven innings of scoreless baseball until the Patriots would finally breakthrough in the 16th inning, as Buddy McCoy would score on a wild pitch to make it 7-6.

No. 20 Rhodes slipped past No. 10 Millsaps in SAA play, 5-4. The Rhodes offense sparked right from the get go, buliding a 5-0 lead over the first two innings and twarting a comeback attemt by Millsaps.

La Verne kept their hold on the top spot in the SCIAC with a 5-3 win over Chapman at Hart Park. Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh, the Leopards rallied on back-to-back singles up the middle to score two runs and to reclaim the lead 4-3 over the Panthers. La Verne then extended its lead 5-3 in the top of the ninth when senior Mark Jebbia singled to left field scoring junior Aaron Orona. 

Johnathan Brooks extended his hitting streak to 27 games and Walker Marksdoubled in Jonathan Wong in the top of the 10th inning to give Oxy the go-ahead run. But Cal Lutheran responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, beating the Tigers 6-5 in the first game of a three-game series between the teams this weekend.

Southpaw Richie Ferguson tossed nine innings of shutout ball as Kean rallied from an early deficit to edge Ramapo, 5-4. Mike Daley started for the Cougars but two walks and three hit batters brought in Ferguson with the bases loaded and no outs. Ferguson limited the damage and the Kean offense was able to catch and pass the Roadrunners as Ferguson put up goose eggs on the scoreboard.

Widener earned their fifth straight victory as they defeated Hood, 5-2, in Commonwealth action at Harry Grove Stadium.  Sophomore Nicholas Enos was 3-for-4 from the plate with one run scored and his first home run of the season.

Senior Tom Gaccione threw a complete-game shutout and sophomore catcher Mike Knauf was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI as the William Paterson Pioneers defeated visiting Rutgers-Newark, 6-0.

No 22 Methodist grabbed an 8-3 win over N.C. Wesleyan, claiming the USA South Spring Sports Festival series after an 11-1 win on Thursday. Matt Jack was 2-for-2, tallying two RBI and two scored runs while Ray Lanners was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two scored runs.

Thiel cruised to an 11-4 victory over Penn State-Behrend at Tomcat Park. The Lions plated three runs in the top of the third before the Tomcats responded with 11 unanswered runs. Brian Genco paced Thiel's offense going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

John Jay picked up their first win of the season against the Mount St. Vincent at Fordham University. David Schildwachter made the start and pitched a complete game two-hitter. The senior allowed two hits, three walks, and struck out five. Joe Jacobsen was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk for the Bloodhounds.

For the third weekend in a row, the Duhawks opened a weekend series in IIAC play with a split. Late-inning heroics was the story for game one, as Loras responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wartburg swiped game two thanks to a six-run sixth innning, on their way to a 10-6 win.

Hope erupted for a 19-2 win at Albion to salvage a doubleheader split in the opener of their four-game series. The Flying Dutchmen rebounded after dropping game one by a 6-3 margin.

Sophomore Jake Lloyd worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth as Arcadia held off a late rally by host Lebanon Valley for a 5-4 Commonwealth Conference victory. This was the first of a three-game series between the two teams that will meet for a conference doubleheader Saturday at Arcadia's Erny Field.

A two-run top of the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie as Amherst defeated NESCAC rival Hamilton on the road at Royce Field, 5-3. The Jeffs' hot streak continues as they improve to 7-0 in the NESCAC with nine wins in their last 10 games. Yanni Thanopoulos and Harry Roberson led the Purple & White with two hits each as the visitor's finished with nine total. Both players recorded a double and a RBI, while Roberson scored twice from the lead-off spot.

Franklin tallied a season-high 20 hits and scored multiple runs in five innings during a 15-6 series-opening victory over Transylvania in HCAC action from John P. McDowell Field. Franklin connected on two home runs and all nine players recorded one hit in the victory.

Sophomore John Delahanty registered three hits and the eventual game-winning home run against Delaware Valley, helping Manhattanville take down the Aggies by a final score of 5-4 in Freedom Conference play.  Delahanty went 3-for-3 at the plate with a homer and two runs scored for Manhattanville, leading the offensive charge in the Valiant win over Delaware Valley.

After a long hard fought game on both sides St. Vincent took a 7-6 extra innings win from Geneva. The Tornadoes started out strong with a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third. St. Vincent would come back strong to make it a close game. The game would go back and forth before St. Vincent would wrap up the win in the tenth inning.

Kevin Luciano extended his hitting streak to 28 games by hitting a walk-off single to give Keystone a 6-5 victory over Neumann in an exciting, CSAC game at Christy Mathewson Field.  The Giants, who rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn the win, recorded their sixth win in their last seven games.

After falling behind 2-0, Stevenson scored eight of the game's final 11 runs, including four in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by the game-winning RBI from senior Troy Miller as the Mustangs posted an 8-5 Commonwealth Conference victory over Messiah at Park Field. Stevenson remained two games behind Alvernia for first place in the conference and two games ahead of third-place Widener with five remaining.

Haverford scored two runs in the top of the 12th inning to take a thrilling 6-4 victory over the Ursinus Bears at Thomas Field. Haverford scored one run in the eleventh only to see the Bears tie it up before plating the two run margin in the twelfth.

Justin Miller went up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth looking to start a potential game-winning rally for Manchester. To the delight of the crowd at Gratz Field Miller’s plan went another step. The senior got a 0-1 fastball from Mt. St. Joseph hurler Nathan Lambert and drove it off the top of the press box at neighboring Carl W. Burt Memorial football Field for the winning run in a 5-4 HCAC decision.

Lancaster Bible kicked off a crazy three days in which the Chargers will play six times, with two wins on Friday as Lancaster Bible took down Baptist Bible, 11-5 and 14-3 at Charger Field in Lancaster, Pa. At the plate, Long owned game two as he went 4-for-4 with seven RBI and five runs scored. The five runs scored tie a program record that was previously set by Matt Taliercio.
