In game one of a doubleheader, Ferrum and Virginia Wesleyan played into the 16th inning then the Marlins scored three to win the marathon game 8-3. They made it a sweep with a 14-9 win in regulation.
Endicott won a pair of tight conference games against crosstown rival Gordon College, 7-6 and 14-11, on Sunday evening at North Field. Endicott raced out to a 7-0 lead through four innings of play but needed to hold off a furious seventh inning rally from Gordon to come away with the victory. Much like game one, the Gulls jumped out to a massive advantage on the scoreboard, this time a 12-3 lead after four, but Gordon didn't go away quietly once again pushing Endicott to the brink before Crowley shut the door in the ninth.

As the Methodist Monarchs passes the halfway mark in the USA South Athletic Conference schedule, the Monarchs added two important league victories with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Greensboro College Sunday afternoon. Methodist won the first game, 5-2, and took Game 2 by a score of 12-4. The sweep gives Methodist a 6-4 record in conference play, one win behind William Peace (7-4 record) for second place in the East Division standings. Due to ramifications from the COVID-19 pandemic, the USA South has reduced its 2021 tournament field to only the top two teams from each division. The Monarchs and the Pacers have a pivotal three-game series in Cary, N.C., starting on Saturday, April 17.
Denison's winning streak came to an end at nine following a doubleheader split with Wabash College on Sunday afternoon at Big Red Field. Denison prevailed in game one, 16-2 but dropped game two, 8-2. Brian McAuliffe tied the Denison single-game record with 7 RBI in game one. He was 3-for-4 with a home run and two, two-run singles. McAuliffe is the fifth Denison player to record seven RBI in one game. The last time it occurred was March 8, 2009 when Park Smith went 6-for-6 against Rhodes College. In game two Wabash (11-11, 4-4 NCAC West) scored five runs in the top of the first off Denison starter Kenny Lippman to jump out in front. Little Giant starter Tavic Simmons went the distance, allowing just five hits and two earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched. Simmons struck out three and walked four.
Dean College split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph’s College (ME) on Sunday afternoon. Dean won the first game 9-3, while Saint Joseph’s took game two 10-7. Dean goes to 3-1 overall and in GNAC play, while Saint Joseph’s goes to 12-10 overall land 3-1 in conference action. The Bulldogs will play a home-and-home with Lasell next weekend. Junior Ethan Bernardo went six strong innings to earn the win for Dean. He allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out three. Senior Ryan Stover pitched a scoreless inning of relief. The Monks earned the split with a big offensive game two. The Monks received a 4-for-4 effort from Ben Gravel, while Luke Stephens, Richardson and Fournier each finished with three hits. Stephens scored three runs and knocked in a pair and Fournier had three RBIs.
Saint Mary's entered Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Augsburg having recorded 25 extra-base hits through the season's first 18 games — all doubles. Saint Mary's added three extra-base hits to that marker against the Auggies Sunday — including two that weren't doubles. Jack Arndt and Tyler O'Brien launched Saint Mary's first two home runs of the season — as well as the first of their collegiate careers — to lead the Cardinals to a 5-4 victory at Max Molock Field.
Pacific Lutheran University asserted its dominance over its crosstown nemesis for the second consecutive day, closing out the Northwest Conference series with a sweep of host University of Puget Sound. The Lutes bested the Loggers 5-3 and 2-1 on Sunday for their first series sweep of the 2021 campaign. In game one, Kenton Robillard was a perfect three-for-three at the plate while Haworth was three-for-five with two runs scored. Cole Trotignon picked up the win on the bump, tossing six innings and striking out four. Alex Gregory notched his first save of the season and the 16th of his career, tossing three innings of long relief and fanning four batters. Jonathan Cohen collected the win, striking out six in five innings of labor before making way for Ferguson who tossed the final two frames, allowing just one hit and no runs to net the save. With the NWC series sweep, the Lutes have now won six of the seven scheduled games against Puget Sound this season, including outscoring the intracity rivals by a 64-20 margin.
Hamilton College's Gavin Schaefer-Hood moved into a tie for third place on the program's all-time list for career pitching victories and the Continentals split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Dresser Diamond on Saturday. Hamilton (1-4, 1-4 NESCAC) won the opener 8-5 and the Cardinals edged the Continentals 4-3 in the second game. Both contests lasted seven innings. Schaefer-Hood collected his 13th career win after he allowed two first-inning runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out six, hit two batters and didn't walk anyone.
In the deciding game of the series, the Celts would open up the game hot, plating six runs in the first two innings. In the top of the first, with runners on second and third, John Sebok and Hunter Pachal would each drive a run in to give UST the early two-run advantage. With an early Kangaroo error, the Celts would kickstart the second inning with a runner in scoring position. Trey Esacbedo would deliver with a RBI single which would bring home Mitch Gross. Down to their final out of the inning, Caleb Edmonds would launch a three-run home run to left field, his fourth home run of the year. Zachary Brewer and the Celts defense would contain Austin College for the first half of the game, only surrendering three runs. Alex Schlosser (1-0) would pick up the win, only allowing one hit while getting UST out of a fifth-inning jam. Heading into the seventh with 6-3 lead, Parker Edwards would put the finishing touches on this one with his RBI single to drive in Sebok. The Celts picked up their first-ever SCAC series victory and advance to 14-10 on the season.
Marian University (5-15, 1-1 NACC) split with Concordia Wisconsin to open NACC play. Marian was able to put together three big innings to earn an extra -innings victory in game one by a 10-7 final. The second game was all Falcons as CUW scored in the first inning once again and never looked back as the Sabre offense only managed five hits in a 9-0 defeat. Marian athletics photo |
Ohio Northern completed a four-game series sweep of Heidelberg with 9-5 and 13-4 victories at Valley on Sunday. The Polar Bears (8-11 overall, 7-8 Ohio Athletic Conference) ran their winning streak to five games. The Student Princes fall to 10-10, 7-9. Junior Chayten Overholt led the offense for the Polar Bears going 6-for-10 win two doubles and 3 RBIs on the day. Senior Michael Rocco recorded five hits on the day including a solo home run and 2 RBIs.
Salem State erased a three-run deficit, scoring four runs over the final two innings, including two in the ninth inning to earn an 11-10 come-from-behind victory over the Fitchburg State Falcons on Sunday at Riccards Field. Trailing 10-9 in the final frame, Jack Sefrino hit a one-out single to score pinch-runner Tim Catalano, who came in after a double by Zach Piroh, to tie the score at 10-10. One batter later, Brahiam Ortega delivered the game-winning run on a base hit to left as the Vikings (2-1) took two-of-three from the Falcons over their weekend series.

York College completed a series sweep of Hood on Sunday as they captured the final two games of the series on Sunday afternoon in Frederick, Maryland. The Spartans won game one 8-4 thanks to a huge third inning and completed the sweep with a 2-0 two-hit shutout victory in the nightcap. The Spartans, winners of eight straight, improve to 18-2 overall and 14-2 in the MAC Commonwealth. The Blazers fall to 4-14 overall and 2-10 in the Commonwealth.
Lasell University split the conference match against the Albertus Magnus College Falcons, 13-3 and 6-3, Sunday at Stein Diamond. The matchup moves the Lasers to 5-13 overall and 4-4 in the GNAC while Albertus Magnus moves to 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the GNAC. Freshman CJ Mills (Waltham, Mass.) went six strong innings giving up only four hits while striking out five to earn his first career victory. Danaher led the game in hits on route to a four for four day at the plate while grabbing two RBI. Robinson went two for three and had two RBIs. In game two, Albertus Magnus score in four of the first five inning, adding another run in the sixth inning when senior Brandon Clark singled home a run to give the Falcons a three-run lead. The lead held for the Falcons as they took game two.
Entering this season-opening weekend with major concerns about pitching depth, the Kenyon College squad saw its starting staff eliminate the uneasiness by guiding the Lords to a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) series win against the Hiram College Terriers. Following Saturday's split in which Patrick Craig and Zach Elsawy allowed just three earned runs in 11 innings of work, the Lords put together a Sunday doubleheader sweep of the Terriers as Zach Frizzera and Sam Richards combined to yield just two runs and eight hits during Kenyon victories of 10-1 and 6-1.
Emory University collected a pair of wins Sunday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the Sewanee Tigers in Sewanee, TN. With the two victories, the Eagles improved to 6-5 overall while the two losses dropped the Tigers to 1-8. Michael Edelman and Jack Moore powered the Eagles to a three-run win in the opener. Edelman drove in three runs in a three-hit performance while Moore pitched into the ninth inning as he earned his first win of 2021. The Eagles scored nine runs on 12 hits to edge out Sewanee in the offensive battle in the second game of the double dip. The two teams combined for 28 hits in the contest.
Maritime College defeated Manhattanville through constant rain on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-0 in just five innings. The difficult weather proved to be a challenge for both teams, but strong pitching from Niko Concha and a clutch fourth-inning single from Jaden Shea was enough for the Privateers to get the win. Concha was stellar on the mound for Maritime as he was only gave up one hit and walked one batter in five innings pitched. Meanwhile, the Valiants struggled to keep control of the slippery ball as they combined for eight walks. Offensively, the Privateers struggled as well, but came up with a clutch hit when they needed it. After two walks put Freddy Forgione and Austen Bishop on base, Shea came up to bat and drove a single into left field that allowed both runners to score. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the rain reached a point that created unplayable conditions and the game was called.
