Hood opens MACC tournament with play-in win

The tandem of Jordan Patterson and Jahlin Jean-Baptiste combined to shut out Albright in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth Championships. With the win in the single-elimination game, the Blazers advance to a best-of-three series at top-seeded York (Pa.). The teams will play a doubleheader at YCP on Saturday, May 1 at noon. If needed, the teams will play in Frederick on May 2. Patterson scattered four hits and two walks over 7.2 innings of work to earn his third win of the year. Jean-Baptiste entered the game with two on and two out in the eight and forced a groundout to retire the side, then tossed a perfect ninth for the save.

Freshman right-hander Bryce Afthim hurled seven shutout innings as the University of Southern Maine broke open a close game in the late innings to post an 8-1 win over the UMass Boston in Little East Conference action Tuesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field. With the win, the Huskies improved their overall mark to 17-8 and are now 8-4 in Little East Conference play. The Beacons fall to 3-4 overall and in conference play. Senior Andrew Hillier and Janek Luksza led the Huskies' 10-hit attack with a pair of hits. Afthim allowed just four hits and one walk over seven frames to earn his sixth win of the season. He struck out five. Ben Lambert picked up a save allowing the one run on one hit and three walks while striking out five. Junior Nico Kydes was the lone Beacon to solve Afthim banging out a double and single.

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs knocked off the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Trinity University, on Tuesday night in a 2-1 non-conference road victory for the Bulldogs. Randy Huerta, the reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, hit a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning. The home run to left-center proved to be the game-winner. For Huerta, the Bulldogs' starting third baseman, the homer was his fifth in the last five games. He has eight in the 2021 season. Zach Perry (1-1) tossed 2-1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. He struck out four. Blade Strzelczyk pitched a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the year.

Penn State Altoona pulled its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference record back up to .500 on Tuesday afternoon, when the Lions swept nearby conference rival Mount Aloysius College in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field. The Lions (9-13, 7-7 AMCC) posted their first shutout of the season in game one, blanking Mount Aloysius (16-10, 10-4 AMCC) by a final score of 4-0. After a shaky start to the second game, Penn State Altoona tightened things up and prevailed 11-9 and earn the doubleheader sweep. Kyle Glass improved to 4-1 on the mound this season, tossing his first collegiate shutout in his third complete game effort of the spring. The right-hander pitched seven innings and struck out two batters, scattering eight hits and issuing two walks while keeping the Mounties off of the scoreboard. The Lions overcame a four-run, four-error top of the first inning to post a well-played game the rest of the way. Penn State Altoona finished with 11 runs on 18 hits, and the Lions also got more effective pitching on the mound.g, when Leonard's RBI groundout, Jeremy Iellimo's RBI single to right, and Joshua Brown's bases-loaded walk gave the visitors an 8-6 lead.

Senior Jacob Selden went 1 for 4 with one run and two RBI as No. 17 Randolph-Macon outscored Virginia Wesleyan 11-5 on Tuesday afternoon to remain in first place in the ODAC. Senior Zack Radcliffe earned the win, fanning two in 1.2 innings to raise his record to 2-2. Senior Tyler Dunn struck out three in the ninth to secure the win for the Yellow Jackets. The pitching staff left 15 runners on base.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology increased its winning streak to seven games and scored a combined 32 runs to sweep a baseball doubleheader at Anderson University on Tuesday. Rose-Hulman scored eight runs in the first inning and pounded out 15 hits to earn a 17-4 win in the opener. The Fightin' Engineers added 13 hits with six extra-base hits to capture a 15-11 win in the nightcap. In game one, Shane Garner led the Rose-Hulman offense with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs. Josh Mesenbrink scored three runs and added two hits with two RBIs. In the nightcap, both offenses brought strong performances in a 15-11 Rose-Hulman victory. Ernst led the offense with a home run, double, single, four runs scored and two RBIs.

Texas-Dallas scored 20 runs for the third time this season as the Comets rolled past Hardin-Simmons, 21-8, Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play. The Comets (22-10) blasted a pair of grand slam home runs in the lop-sided victory as Ramon Garza and Keagan Vance each accomplished the feat Tuesday afternoon. UTD would score 11 runs off of three home runs in the contest as Daniel Zamora added a three-run blast, his team-leading eighth of the season. UTD finished with 22 hits in the contest, one shy of its season high, while finishing with 20 RBI. Vance was 3-for-6 with five RBI and two runs scored while Garza finished 2-for-5 with five RBI and four runs scored. A.J. Liu was 3-for-3 with four runs scored an an RBI, reaching base five times in the win.

Franklin College pulled out a miraculous late-game comeback on Tuesday night, rallying from four runs down in the ninth to force extras before Logan Demkovich walked it off in the 11th in a 15-14 win over Transylvania. Nick Wright and Tysen Lipscomb both went deep for Franklin (17-9), who got a little bit of payback on the Pioneers (22-9) two days after dropping a pair of games to Transy in Kentucky. It was an extra-special afternoon for Wright, as the Bloomington, Ind.-native drove in three runs to break Nick Stoia's career RBI record and give him 162 for his career. Franklin cut the lead in half in the eighth when a throwing error allowed Lipscomb to hustle home, but the Pioneers responded with three in the top of the ninth to take a 14-10 lead. Franklin wasted no time starting their ninth-inning rally, with the first two batters getting on base and Wright blasting a deep double to right field that scored Wellington to make it 14-11. With two outs, Lipscomb sent a 3-1 pitch the opposite way for his second home run of the year to tie things up. Demkovich capped the rally two innings later with Ryan Bixler on second, smacking a 2-1 pitch into the right field corner and sending the Grizzly bench into a frenzy.

Senior Ryan Weiss hit a grandslam in game one and a two-run shot in the second matchup to lead Oswego State to a pair of wins, 23-7 and 9-4, and extend the team's win streak to 14 games. Oswego rushed out to a 5-0 lead after Weiss' grandslam in the lid lifter. The Lakers also had three other opportunities with the bases loaded prior to the sixth inning as the offense was putting runners aboard. Freshman Jai Sharma pitched four innings while holding Rochester to just two runs. In the second game, The Lakers scored in each inning from the second to the sixth to double-up the Yellowjackets. Weiss kicked things off with his two-run shot while junior Kyle Lauria concluded the scoring with his solo. Senior Jake Terrill (2-0) went six innings, allowing only four hits, for the win.

Kalamazoo College defeated Calvin 9-5 on Tuesday in a non-conference single game against the Knights. Kalamazoo scored six runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. The Hornets brought one more run through in the fifth and again in the sixth when Noah Hecht stole home. Despite another run scored by Calvin in the sixth, Kalamazoo kept the lead and added a run in the top of the seventh to earn the 9-5 victory. The three home runs in today's contest were good for a new single-season home run record as the team now has 21 on the season. The previous record was 19, set during the 2017 season.

Alex Morales had five hits and four runs batted in in Greensboro College's 15-2 USA South Athletic Conference victory over visiting Mary Baldwin University Tuesday at Ted Leonard Park. Teammate Scott McGuire went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI in the Pride's home finale. The conference game was called in the eighth inning after Greensboro scored three times to invoke a conference run rule. The Pride (13-17, 5-10 USA South) matched its season high with 20 hits. Eight of the team's starting field players had hits, including Chase Bryant, who doubled twice among his three knocks and added two RBI. Cameron Peters and Hunter Curtis also had two hits for Greensboro.

Penn State Behrend has now won five of the last six
games after sweeping Medaille 18-6 and 8-0 in AMCC
action on Tuesday afternoon.

University of Lynchburg topped Hampden-Sydney 6-4 on the road Tuesday afternoon as the Hornets received two solo home runs in the top of the ninth from junior Jackson Harding and sophomore Avery Neaves. In the top of the ninth inning, with the game tied at 4-4, Harding sent his first career home run over the right field fence to put the Hornets up 5-4. Two batters later, Neaves sent one out to left center to give the Hornets a two-run advantage. Lynchburg starter Zack Potts went 6 ⅔ and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits, walked one and struck out four, but earned a no-decision. Jack Bachmore threw a perfect inning and ⅔ as the sophomore struck out two and earned his fourth win of the year.

Northern Vermont-Lyndon swept both ends of its North Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday afternoon. The wins give the Hornets a five-game sweep of the weekend series with the Beavers and improve their record to 5-8 overall and 5-5 in NAC play. UMF falls to 3-12 overall and 3-11 in conference. The Beavers made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning in game one. A single and wild pitch cut the Hornet lead to 6-4. After Andrew Hopkins walked to put the tying run on base, Hornet reliever Ryder Thornton got Troy Johnson to line out to Sean Cavanaugh at third to end the game. in the nightcap, Lyndon took the early advantage building their lead to 5-0. UMF finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning but the Hornets responded with a big inning in their half of the fifth. Down to their final turn at bat, UMF staged a rally in the top of the seventh inning. However Cavanaugh came in reflief and got Ryan Simard to ground out to end the game.

No. 15 Shenandoah University completed a regular season sweep of its ODAC baseball series versus Eastern Mennonite with a 10-2 win at EMU Tuesday afternoon. Shenandoah (22-7, 15-4 ODAC) hit two home runs and got a stellar pitching performance from Calvin Pastel in dispatching the Royals (6-11, 6-11). Henry Delavergne hit a solo home run in the third and Frankie Ritter a two-run shot in the fourth as the Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The seven-run advantage was more than enough for Pastel (4-1). The sophomore scattered seven hits over seven innings and allowed one run while walking one and striking out four. Cade Templeton pitched the eighth and ninth, struck out two and allowed one run on two hits.

Trey Romay blasted a solo homer in the 10th inning to lift Elmhurst University to a 6-5 win over Dominican University at Butterfield Park. Dominican loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but the Stars were limited to just one run on a sacrifice fly. The Stars pulled even in the top of the ninth, scoring a run on a ground out and another on a sacrifice fly. In extra innings, Dominican loaded the bases in the top of the 10th but came up empty. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Romay crushed a line-drive homer to left field to give the Bluejays the walk-off 6-5 victory.
