Johns Hopkins gets early win on Saturday

Swarthmore College held off a Washington and Lee five ninth inning and won 9-6, on the second day of the D3 Showcase in Kannapolis, N.C.

Johns Hopkins hosted St. John Fisher in its 2025 season opener Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Cardinals 7-3. In Coach Bob Babb's 46th and final opening day at the helm, the Blue Jays took the lead in the opening frame, responding to every challenge Fisher threw at them. Hopkins (1-0) jumped out to an early lead on an Alex Shane home run, followed by a sac fly from Jacob Harris, giving the Jays a two-run lead. The Cardinals (1-1) responded with two runs of their own, tying the game in the top of the fourth. When the momentum seemed to shift in Fisher's favor, the Blue Jays were able to string four hits together, regaining the lead 5-2. That proved to be all they needed for the victory; however, Shawn Steuerer wasn't done. The senior added two insurance runs with bombs to both left and center field.

No. 2 Salve Regina opened its 2025 season at Catholic University in the Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational and the Seahawks finished with an 11-2 decision over the host Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy in Washington D.C. Salve Regina built a 4-1 lead through eight innings. In the ninth, they exploded for seven runs. Tyler Petrosino led off with a walk and Brady Smolinski had an opposite field single. A walk to Shane Williams loaded the bases and Brandon Grover drove in his third run of the game with a single to right field. Evan O'Rourke doubled to left field to bring home Smolinski, Williams, and Grover. Christian Homa traded places with O'Rourke for a 9-1 lead. Homa scored on Wil McCarthy's single and Petrosino delivered McCarthy with a double. Kyle Carozza (W, 1-0) earned the victory in his second career start while striking out six in five and two-thirds innings. Six Seahawks had a multi-hit game led by Evan O'Rourke who had three base hits including a double and three runs batted in.

No. 3 nationally ranked Endicott split its season-opening doubleheader with LaGrange, 12-3 (loss) and 15-6 (13-inning win), on Saturday afternoon at Cleaveland Field. In the bottom half of the fourth of the opener, the Panthers did capitalize on their baserunners, as they drove in a six-spot to break the game open. Endicott was not able to find any real offense until the eighth inningBut it was too late. After facing a 4-0 deficit, the Gulls were able to force extra innings in the nightcap. , and thanks to a heroic collegiate debut from Ben Gill out of the bullpen, eventually were able to pull away in the 13th inning with a 10-run frame. The Gulls got some clutch extra-innings relief from Preseason All-American Kyan Bagshaw and then Gill set the stage for an offensive explosion in the 13th. Elijah Moses, Joe Frammartino, Kyle Grabowski, and Danny MacDougall each racked up RBI base-knocks in the 10-run frame. Gill stayed on for the bottom of the 13th to close out the Blue and Green's first win of the 2025 season.

Sophomore Jack Bowles had two hits and two RBI, while sophomore Peter Phillips tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief, as No. 13 Randolph-Macon defeated Messiah 7-4 on Saturday afternoon to open the 2025 season. Down 3-1 RMC put up a crooked number in the third giving the home team a 4-3 edge. Messiah used a solo homer in the top of the fourth to level the score at 4-4. Phillips (1-0) took over on the mound with two away in the fourth. He hurled 4.1 innings with two hits, one walk and four strikeouts to earn the victory. The Yellow Jackets would reclaim the lead with a two-out rally in the fifth and add an insurance run in the seventh. Senior Sam Slevin fanned one in a hitless ninth to record the save. Slevin has 12 career saves, one away from the program record of 13 by Christian Cok (2015-18).

Piedmont University rolled to a 14-4 victory Saturday over Susquehanna in seven innings. The Lions came out of the gate hot and scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take control of the contest. Trace Cate was the player of the game as he was 2-for-4 with seven RBI as he had a 3-run home run in the second inning and a bases-clearing double in the third. Piedmont jumped out quickly with a 3-0 lead after the first and continued to pile on in the second. Following the first pitching change of the game just 11 batters in, Trace Cate homered to drive in three runs making it 7-0. Bodie Eilertson struck out the side in the bottom of the second before the offense went back to work. The Lions scored another four runs in the third with Cate clearing the bases with a double, coming off another River Hawks reliever. Susquehanna was able to tack on four in the third inning but all runs were unearned after a pair of errors in the frame. Piedmont added two more runs in the fifth and another in the seventh forcing Susquehanna through four pitchers.

Senior Jacob Rocky threw seven shutout innings as Marietta College defeated No. 11 ranked Christopher Newport University, 9-1, Saturday afternoon at the D3 Showcase. The Pioneers move to 1-1 on the season, while CNU falls to 4-2 overall. Rocky (1-0) started and blanked the Captains for 7.0 innings. He scattered five hits, walked two and struck out four. Cooper Fiehrer worked the final 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits. He walked two and struck out one. Will Loftus went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in for the Pioneers.

In a zany back-and-forth affair, George Fox pushed past the North Central Cardinals Saturday afternoon in an exhilarating 15-9 game, using six eighth inning runs to capture the win. With a Bruin lead at 7-4, the Cardinals responded quickly, scoring four runs of their own to snag an 8-7 lead back. The Bruins, however, countered again just inching above North Central, 9-8. The Cardinals tied the score, but then came the eighth inning. George Fox scored six runs in the eighth inning—Koga doubled to left field, scoring Strube to start the scoring. With two men on, the Loggers chose to intentionally walk Eastman, hoping to avoid a blow-up inning. Immediately, Evan Balingit hit a grand slam to score four runs and blow the game open. Finally, Coulter got one last run in before the eighth inning was over thanks to a Ho double, giving the Bruins a 15-9 victory. Ryder Edwards finished out the game for Fox, striking out the final three batters.

Lynchburg, ranked ninth nationally D3baseball.com defeated Cortland, 2-1, at the D3 Showcase tournament. The teams combined for only four hits in the game - three by Cortland and one by Lynchburg. Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Chris Bonacci walked, stole second with one out and scored on a two-out single by Zachary Kringdon. Lynchburg scored its two runs without a hit in the bottom of the second. Sean Pokorak led off with a walk and Joe Munitz put down a sac bunt and was safe at first on a throwing error. With one out, Eric Hiett and Parker Cato drew back-to-back walks to tie the game, and with two outs the Hornets scored their second run on an error.

FDU-Florham (1-0) hosted Drew (0-2) for the first part of the Madison Avenue Challenge, and sealed victory, winning by a score of 6-1. Jack Giovenco started off the season hot, going three-for-four while scoring three runs. Ryan Johnston had an excellent debut as well, as he went two-for-five with an RBI and a stolen base. Parker Muratore made it on base in three out of his four at-bats. Chris Kaponis earned his first win of the season from a great outing, going five innings with six strikeouts, and giving up no earned runs. Tyler Gaetano threw two innings, and gave up no runs while striking out one. Eddie Appollina saw the last two innings of work for the Devils on the mound, and gave up no runs while striking out one.

Shenandoah University returned to the diamond for
its second weekend series, hosting Widener University
for a doubleheader. The Hornets (5-1) split the series,
winning the first game 1-0 before falling in the
nightcap 6-2.

Senior third baseman Ryan Nutley went 4-for-8 with two triples and five RBIs in the doubleheader and senior first baseman Diego Salazar hit a tie-breaking home run in the nightcap as Rutgers University-Camden swept Immaculata University in a season-opening twinbill for both teams here Saturday. Rutgers-Camden won by scores of 11-4 and 10-6 against a strong program that has been to the NCAA tournament for three straight seasons. Senior Ethan Carpenter had a strong start in the opener, working 5.2 innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs to pick up the win. Carpenter didn't walk a batter and struck out eight in an outing that saw him retire 12 straight batters at one point. Rutgers-Camden built an early 6-2 lead behind the pitching of senior southpaw Chase Cooper, who worked five innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs and one walk. He struck out four.

Kalamazoo College split a doubleheader at Oglethorpe University on Saturday falling 8-4 in game won before winning game two 13-11 in eight innings. Oglethorpe scored first with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Stormy Petrels added two runs in the fourth and four in the seventh. Kalamazoo scored one run in the third, one in the sixth, and two on David Stechow's single up the middle in the ninth. The Hornets had two runners on in the ninth when the final out was recorded. Kalamazoo won Saturday's second game 13-11 in eight innings for the Hornets first win of the season. Kalamazoo finished with 19 hits in the game compared to 10 by Oglethorpe. Kalamazoo also stole five bases in the game. Ryar Rinehart finished 6-for-6 in the game with four doubles and six RBIs. The six hits ties the school record, while his four doubles set a new school record.

Lewis & Clark earned a pair of 8-7 wins over reigning Northwest Conference Tournament Champions Willamette University on Saturday in their 2025 home opener. Junior Joaquin Sandoval hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning of game one to cap-off a comeback victory. The Pioneers trailed 6-1, before scoring seven runs in the final four innings. The second game had it's own interesting twists and turns. Lewis & Clark grabbed an 8-3 midway through the game in the midst of a torrential downpour. Willamette rallied to cut the deficit to 8-7 after eighth innings. They scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning and were still at-bat, when the umpires called the game due to darkness – forcing a reset to the last completed inning (8-7 Lewis & Clark after eight).

Brockport opened the 2025 season with a doubleheader sweep of William Peace on Saturday in North Carolina. The Golden Eagles took game one in a 12-0 rout before defeating the Pacers 6-3 in game two. Brockport jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning extended their lead, with Josh Index singling to set the stage for Zach Eldred, who would smash a two-run homer to right field to put Brockport up 5-0. The fourth inning saw Brockport increase their advantage with a four-run surge. Brockport's offense continued to shine in the eighth inning as Eldred connected for a two-run homer, with Jason Story following up with a solo shot. The Brockport pitching staff would hold William Peace to just one hit, leading to the 12-0 win. In the nightcap, Brockport took an early lead and extended the lead to 2-0. The eighth inning was pivotal for Brockport, as they managed to come back with a four-run surge. Ryan Peters (W, 1-0) picked up the win, going 2 innings with one run allowed and a strikeout. Nick Ianniello (S,1) shut the door for the Golden Eagles, tossing two scoreless innings with three punchouts.

The Victory Era begins for first-year head coach Mike Victory with Ty Broughton's two-run double in the seventh inning along with the five-hit effort from the pitching staff to escape with a 5-4 win over Ursinus in the Cougar Classic at Patriot Park on Saturday afternoon. Ty Broughton went 2-for-3 including a double and three RBIs. Finn Scott-Daniels ended up with another no decision, but after four innings of scoreless baseball and striking out four. Mason Salisbury would earn the win with his two innings of work allowing two runs on two hits. Mason Sawyers would get the two-inning save allowing two runs on two hits.

It was the coldest day in the history of Gary Wright Field as Centre hosted Carthage and Brevard in doubleheader action. After getting an 11-1 run rule victory over the Firebirds, the Colonels walked it off to defeat the Tornados 6-5 in extra innings. Centre offense had its biggest inning of the young season in the fifth, Ben Prather smacked one up the middle to plate two runs and a Carthage error resulted in the final run of the inning and capped off a nine-run frame for the Colonels. Aidan Carr came on in relief of Cowdrey and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to lock down the run rule win for Centre. In the nightcap, the game moved to extras and in the tenth, the Tornados finally got something going as a leadoff single and deep double got the go-ahead run on the board. Now with their backs against the wall, the Centre offense struck quickly. Weisberg led off with a shot up the middle for a base hit. Woodall then singled down the left field line. Craig reached on an error that allowed the tying run to cross the plate. After Aaron Lopez was hit by a pitch, Prather stepped in the box with the bases loaded and delivered, ripping a single through the left side to score Craig for the winning run.

Franklin & Marshall (1-0) started off its 2025 campaign with a 14-8 victory over Hampden-Sydney (1-1) in Saturday afternoon's non-conference game at Ty Cobb Ballpark. F&M scored six runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. The Diplomats continued to pull away from the Tigers, scoring three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth for its largest win on opening day since 2015. The HSC Tigers scored three runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, followed by two runs in the ninth. However, the 14-0 deficit was too great to overcome. Five Diplomats tallied multi-hit games, while AJ Desautels led the contest with four RBI. Dan Galef (1-0) earned the win on the mound, striking out two and allowing two earned runs in five innings of work.

Behind some late game heroics from first-year catcher JJ Matos, a pair of triples from junior Leyton Bamesberger, and strong pitching in the late game, Eastern began its 2025 season with a two-game spilt against the Penn State York Lions at MSI. The Eagles rallied from a four-run deficit with a pair of runs in the fourth and sixth frames, and with the bases loaded, Matos hit a single up the middle to score Brian Lang and seal the Eagles' 5-4 victory.

The University of Redlands (8-4) bounced back from their lost yesterday with a doubleheader sweep, 6-4. 11-5, of Whitworth University Saturday. In the eighth Whitworth tied the game at four, but the Bulldogs came back with a game-winning triple by Tyler Barsness. Barsness then added an insurance run on a wild pitch. For the first time all series the Bulldogs were the first to strike to see the lead switched hands in the third when the Pirates went ahead 2-1 on a two-run double. The deficit would be short live, however, as Nate Miller's run on a balk started a five-run fourth. Nathan Buchan picked up his third win after throwing five innings. Gavin Duenez got the 12-out save as he struck out four pirates in his four innings.

Belhaven (4-3) split Saturday's doubleheader at 10th-ranked East Texas Baptist (3-6), falling in the opener by a final of 3-0 before taking the series finale, 5-3. The first game of the day proved to be a pitcher's duel as Belhaven starter Austin Canale and Tiger starter Matthew Krall matched scoreless frames until the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back singles followed by an error allowed the Tigers to plate the first run of the game. The Blazers responded with a pair of two-out hits from Parker Ryan and Hayden Roberts in the fifth but were unable to push the tying run across. ETBU added two runs in the home half of the sixth before retiring Belhaven in order to finish out the scheduled seven-inning contest with a 3-0 win. In the third game of the series, the Blazers flipped the script with a strong offensive start. ETBU scratched the tying run across in the eighth, but the Belhaven bats once again answered the bell. Thomas Hollingsworth delivered with a two-run single up the middle to put the Blazers ahead 5-3 heading into the Tigers' final at-bat. Two-way player Trey Flettrich entered on the mound to retire the side in order to secure the Top-10 road win.

The undefeated Scots secured the Series against Oberlin with a 2-0 Saturday performance, taking game one 9-8 and game two 8-1. MC started out blazing fast through the first three innings of game one, gaining a 6-1 advantage heading into the fourth. Oberlin would go on to score the next seven runs of the game, hitting one home run, two doubles, one single, and a sac fly to take an 8-6 lead in the eighth inning. Not backing down from the challenge, Daniel Montana pinch hit for Matt Hall with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Montana hit a deep shot down the right field line that was dropped by the right fielder to allow Montana the base and score Whitaker and Hunter Thaxton to tie the game at eight. Reece Jordan singled to right center, scoring Frank Derner from second to take a 9-8 lead. It was a better defensive game for the Scots in game two as they pulled out an 8-1 victory and allowed only three hits.

Mary Washington took down Hanover in Game 1 of the Methodist University Tournament on Saturday in Fayetteville, N.C., 10-2. The Eagles jumped out to an early third inning lead, followed by Justin Ritz's five no-hit innings in the victory. In the third, Jacob Christenbury doubled home George Rizzo to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which was followed by a two-run fifth. In the fifth, Tommy Martinez doubled home Oliver Martin, then Noah Roots reached on an error, which allowed Martinez to score. Ritz finished off the bottom of the fifth with his second consecutive hitless outing (nine total innings) after striking out six and walking a pair of batters. The Eagles gave Gavin Riley some insurance when they scored three more runs in the top of the sixth. Christenbury reached on an error, which allowed Oliver Martin to score, then Ryan Schwarz doubled home Christenbury, which was followed by Martinez's RBI double to increase the lead to 6-0. Riley threw a scoreless sixth, setting up Eric Powell's two-run home run (the first of his career) to extend the Eagles' lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh. Hanover finally got on the board with a run in the seventh, but it was Ty Lowe's RBI single that stalled the Panther momentum in the eighth, then Luke Guerzon scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 10-1.

With a clean line drive into rightfield, Skyler Dark chased home Carter Blum, lifting Guilford College (4-0, 0-0 ODAC) to a game one victory, 6-5, before requiring far less drama in an 8-3 game two win to complete the sweep of Bob Jones University (2-6, 1-2 NCCAA) and improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2001 on Saturday afternoon at Edgar H. McBane Field. Out of the bullpen, Jackson Marcellus entered and dominated allowing just a single hit against four strikeouts over the final 3.1 innings to pick up the win for GC and improve to 1-0. Dark's lone hit was the game-winner, but he did also walk once, scoring a run and driving in two.
