The NCAA Tournament field is getting a whole lot smaller today and Misericordia was the first to go as 16 teams got sent packing. The morning saw the fourth longest game in Division III baseball postseason history as neither Lesley or RIT wanted to see their season end on Friday. And the evening saw a big comeback by Johns Hopkins and a high-scoring game and lightning wreak havoc with the Mideast Regional. The day ended in the Harwich regional as Suffolk walked off, winning 1-0 in the 11th inning.

Day 1 saw two triple plays, no-no

Suffolk, Wheaton (Mass.) and Concordia all ended withng minutes of each other as they closed ot the ction on Friday. Wheaton defeated Shenandoah 6-0 and Concordia has it nearly as easy with a 7-2 win over Adrian. Drama was left to Arcadia and Suffolk. Both teams put up zeros until a ball was misplayed and the winning run came home for a 1-0 Suffolk win in the 11thh inning. The Rams have now strung together 20 shutout innings, three innings of the record set by Chapman in 2000.

When Lesley's Ryan Pumphret flied out in the 15th inning, driving in Vincent Taliercio with a sacrifice fly, it ended the fourth longest game in NCAA playoff records. We got to the 15th inning only because RIT scored twice to force extra frames. The marathon contest fell two innings shy of the playoff-record 17-inning game played between St. Thomas and UW-Stevens Point in the 2009 Midwest Regional. All five games longer than 14 innings have been played in the past 12 years.

St. Thomas and Macalester also played into extras as the Scots' two-game win streak over the Tommies ended with a 3-2 win in 11 innings. St. Thomas first baseman Hunter Hart singled up the middle in the 11th to plate Jake Smith for the winning run.

Senior leadership played well for the Southern Maine Huskie as senior left-hander Tyler Leavitt allowed just four hits and one run over 7,2 innings to defeat TCNJ 10-1. The win moved the second-seeded Huskies into a game against top-seeded Oswego State in a battle of the two remaining unbeaten teams.

Alvernia led Johns Hopkins 8-3, and came into the top of the ninth with a 9-7 lead on the Mid-Atlantic Regional top seed. But none of the four pitchers the Crusaders used in the ninth inning was able to get the job done, as the Blue Jays scored the final six runs to win 13-9. The big blow was registered by Ryan Orgielewicz, who drove a ball to the gap in right center which was dropped by Colin Rieger, allowing three runs to score. 

But at least the Mid-Atlantic Regional, with its long games, hasn't had any of its games pushed to another day. That's what's happening in Washington, Pa., where the W&J-Earlham game was delayed by lightning in the top of the ninth, forcing the Keystone-DePauw winners' bracket game to be moved to Saturday at 10 a.m. Washingtin and Jefferson finally got back on the field for a 15-6 win, forcing DePauw into the elimination bracket.

Earlier at the Mideast Regional, sophomore middle infield duo Jacob Stuursma and Michael Wielansky combined for six RBI, four runs, and four hits as Wooster lived to see another day with a 12-0 win over Misericordia. Wielansky jump-started Wooster with a two-run home run out to left field on a payoff pitch in the top of the first inning. The round-tripper marked the shortstop's 75th hit of the season, and the 15th time a Fighting Scot has reached the three-quarter century mark.

Ithaca also kept its season alive with a 5-2 victory over Castleton. Sophomore Jake Binder made a bid for a second no-hitter in the regionals as he carried a no hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning, but that was broken up with two outs. Binder went on to pitch two more innings and earned his ninth win of the season. He allowed two runs on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Matthew Brown allowed only three hits over seven plus innings as Concordia (Texas) defeated host Texas-Tyler 5-2 in an elimination game between ASC rivals. Brown allowed only two runs on the three hits while striking out a pair. The Tornados used stellar defense too, turning two double plays and getting a diving catch from Race Mellman in center field. He finished with two hits, a run scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases.

Roanoke continue their cinderella season and are a surprising 2-0 team after a 4-2 win over Emory in the Danville Regional. With their fan base only an hour away, they will need plenty of fan support when they face LaGrange. The No. 1 Panthers, 12-5 winners over Rowan, have not been seriously challenged and are just two wins from a trip next weekend to Appleton.

Senior Malcolm Kelsey went 2-for-6 including a home run with two runs scored and an RBI as St. John Fisher defeated Worcester State 14-7, sending the Lancers home. Elizabethtown did the same to SUNY-Maritime, ending the Privateers' season. James Kantner went 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Blue Jays and Anthony Lippy tossed a complete game as Elizabethtown's offense exploded for a 13-5 victory.

Steven Figueroa had six RBI from his leadoff spot and Jeff Cooke threw 132 pitches but got the complete game win as Cortland remained alive, defeating La Roche 10-2 in an elimination game at the Mideast Regional. The Red Dragons got to Nick Tunstall early, scoring three in the second and four in the fourth as Figueroa hit three-run homers to right-center in both innings.

Chad Pigg went 4-for-4 with four RBI and Blake Butcher and James Poropatic added three hits apiece as LaGrange remained unbeaten at the South Regional, defeating Rowan 12-5. Roanoke remained unbeaten as well, keeping its run going as Sal Trancucci threw four innings of stellar relief and Eli Sumpter got his second save of the season. The Maroons took advantage of Billy Dimlow's wildness to scratch out two runs in the top of the fifth and added an unearned run in the eighth and another run in the ninth for the 4-2 win.

After losing the first five meetings of the season between the schools, all of a sudden UW-La Crosse has won two out of three from UW-Whitewater, knocking the Warhawks into the losers bracket with a 5-2 win at the Midwest Regional in Whitewater. Mason McMahon went the first six for the Eagles to improve to 6-1, with Connor Cook coming on for the final two outs for his first save. UW-La Crosse took advantage of three Warhawks errors to hang a pair of unearned runs on Austin Jones, who fell to 8-3.

Robert Donnelly, making just his fourth start of the season, threw a six-hit shutout and Oswego State remained undefeated at the New York Regional by edging Tufts 1-0. Wes Randall got aboard on a walk to lead off the eighth inning, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on John Barnes' two-out single to center. It was all the Lakers would need off of Tufts' starter R.J. Hall, who threw a complete-game four-hitter in defeat.

Birmingham-Southern and Webster traded leads until the Panthers got the upper hand in a 6-4 win over the Gorloks in the Central Regional. This ends Webster's season and brings Birmingham-Southern one step closer to its first appearance in the D-III World Series. Tyler Wise's eighth-inning home run proved to be the winning hit.

Battling back from a three-run, first inning deficit, North Central (Ill.) rallied to score eight unanswered runs while the Cardinal pitching staff posted zeroes over the final eight innings to defeat Wartburg, 8-3. Jeremy Quade finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored to pace the Cardinal offense, while Matt Sutherland was 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.

CCC rookie of the Year Patrick Maybach pitched six innings for his ninth win and Jonathan Lynch came in for a three-inning save, his third of the year as Salve Regina sent Penn State Berks home after two games. Malcolm Kelsey went 2-for-6 including a solo homer with two runs scored as St. John Fisher defeated Worcester State 14-7 in an elimination game in the New England Regional. Otterbein suffered the same fate as its second loss in the first two games came at the hands of Salisbury. 

St. Scholastica's Martin Alcoverde was in command with a complete game 2-0 win over St. Norbert. The Saints' starter scattered five him and added 13 strikeouts as his team set their sights on another elimination game on Saturday. Washington U. also got a solid pitching performance as John Howard and Zack Kotin combined on a three-hitter in a 7-1 win over Greenville.

Senior righthander Matt Tulley scattered three hits and struck out 13 over 8.1 innings to lead Mass-Boston 4-0 over Babson in a contest between unbeatens in the Harwich Regional. The Beacons gave Tulley the only runs he would need in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by senior Anthony Searles and a suicide squeeze off the bat of junior Sal Frosceno. 

Rhodes won for the second time in as many games to join Cal Lutheran as the remaining undefeated teams in the Tyler Regional. The Lynx held off Linfield 11-7 while the Kingsmen were 8-2 winners over SCAC champion Centenary (La.).
