St. Norbert scores 15 in ninth

Tufts out-hit Castleton 18-3, including four hits by junior designated hitter Max Freccia, as the Jumbos defeated the Spartans by double-digit runs for the second straight day, 14-4. The Jumbos trailed early for the second day in a row, but again were able to find their firepower as the game wore on. They had defeated Castleton 13-4 at Apprentice School to open their season on Friday.

St. Norbert was two outs away from having to endure a 20-plus hour bus ride with a loss, but a 15-run rally led the Green Knights to a 17-10 getaway day win over Albion. The Green Knights had one out and nobody on in the top of the ninth before the next 14 batters reached base safely to stun the Britons. St. Norbert scored its 15 runs on eight hits, six walks and two Albion errors to erase an 8-2 deficit. The 15-run inning is believed to be a St. Norbert record.

Jimmy Kenny and Tyler Garguilo each contributed three hits as William Paterson began its Spring Break trip with a 10-5 victory against Worcester State in Winter Haven, Fla. Kenny finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, and Garguilo was 3-for-4, stole two bases and scored a run.

Senior Ryan Styche threw seven shutout innings and the bullpen kept Hilbert scoreless through the final two frames, as Bethany scored an 8-0 triumph for its first win of the season.

Carthage split a Friday night doubleheader to Concordia-Moorheah at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. Carthage lost the opening game 8-3, as the Cobbers turned five double plays.  The Red Men came back to win the nightcap, 5-2, after breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Two big scoring innings were all George Fox needed to blow out the Willamette Bearcats 12-5 in the first game of a NWC doubleheader at Morse Field. The second game was suspended by rain with the Bruins ahead 3-0 after an inning and a half.

Stevens splits its first two games of the New Paltz State Tournament at Dutchess Stadium on against New Paltz and Mount St. Mary (N.Y.). Stevens defeated the Hawks, 5-4, in the opener but dropped a 3-1 decision to Mount St. Mary in the second game.

NYU-Poly held off a fifth-inning by CCNY Beavers and snowy weather to win their second game of the season, 7-4 on the road. Anthony Finch was superb on the mound and at the plate. Finch pitched a complete game five-hitter and was 2-for4 at the dish with three RBI.

Adrian's Ben Yax delivered a pinch hit, two-out walkoff single in an 8-7 win over Thomas More. Yax came through with a base knock to center scoring Jamey Sackett from second. Sackett led off the inning getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a groundout. Another groundout moved Sackett to third with two outs and Anthony Sergi was intentionally walked to set up the Yax heroics.

After stringing together nine straight victories and getting off to a first-place start in the SCIAC, Occidental took a step back this weekend against Cal Lutheran. Following a hard-fought 5-3 loss in Thousand Oaks on Friday, the Tigers dropped a pair at home in a doubleheader against the Kingsmen, losing Game 1 by a score of 10-3 and Game 2 6-0.

The Millsaps Majors hung a 12-spot up in the seventh inning and cruised to a 21-0 win over the Berry Vikings. Seven Majors had multi-hit games and five drove in more than one run. The balanced offensive effort aided Keith Shumaker. The sophomore was brilliant for the second straight conference start. He went the full seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out one. He improves to 2-0 on the season.

Eureka delivered all the offense it would need with a four-run first inning and got six strong innings of relief from freshman pitcher Josiah Rose in the Red Devils' 4-3 non-conference victory over Illinois College at Lenz Field in Jacksonville, Ill.

Freshman Sam Dexter notched his first collegiate hit, a two-out RBI single to left centerfield in the top of the seventh inning to score senior Anthony Pisani and propel Southern Maine to a 2-1 win over  Farmingdale State at the Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Southern Maine junior left hander Logan Carman earned the win on the mound, going 6.2 innings and giving up one run on two hits while striking out seven.

Mississippi College split a doubleheader with LeTourneau at Frierson Field, winning the second game, 9-3, after falling 7-2 in the first game. Sophomore Cody Whitley got the start in the seven inning game and was very effective, picking up his fourth win of the season. Whitley pitched a complete game, allowing six hits on the afternoon and only one earned run while striking out five. The Choctaws got a solid pitching performance from Brooks Fortenberry in the game two win, as he allowed just three hits and one earned run over 7.0 innings pitched.  Fortenberry tied a career-high with nine strikeouts.
