Teams start undefeated in conference

Castleton State got some timely hitting as well a pair of solid pitching performances to sweep Colby-Sawyer in a conference doubleheader, winning 4-1 and 3-1. It was a battle of pitching both games and Castleton proved stronger with the duo of Adam Greenlese and Patrick Riley. Greenlese was impressive in the first game, allowing just three hits over seven innings while striking out five and allowing two walks for his third win of the year. Riley was his equal in the nightcap, going seven innings and giving up an unearned while striking out three and walking a single batter. 

Redlands took a pair of games from Chapman on Saturday 16-11 and 5-0 as the Bulldogs swept the three-game weekend series and added to Chapman's now six-game losing skid. Chapman couldn't get any breaks, turning in their best offensive performance of the season in their first loss and limiting third-place Redlands to just four hits, but were stymied offensively in the second loss.

Case Western Reserve totaled 20 runs on 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Thiel at Tomcat Park. The Spartans rolled to victory in game one by a score of 13-1 and then edged the host Tomcats, 7-5, in the nightcap.

Edgewood and Concordia (Wisc.) traded a wild pair of comebacks in splitting the conference opening doubleheader for both teams. Edgewood scored a total of six runs in the ninth and 10th innings for an 11-8 comeback victory in game one. The Falcons turned the tables in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal a 12-11 victory.

After falling to Grinnell in the first game of the day, Washington (Mo.) held on for a win over St. Norbert to end the day at Kelly Field. Grinnell took advantage of five Washington errors to score eight unearned runs in a 16-3 win in eight innings. The Bears bounced back with a 3-2 win over St. Norbert in a game called in the fifth inning due to rain.

CCNY's Mike Smith hit his third home run of the season and finished 2-for-4 in game one at Baseball Heaven against Baruch but the strong pitching of Baruch allowed the Bearcats to sweep a doubleheader over the Beavers, 7-3 and 9-0, respectively.

Shane Sampson and Vinny D'Ambrosio paced a 21-hit attack with four base knocks each to lift WPI to a 14-5 victory over Springfield in the nightcap of NEWMAC doubleheader at SC's Berry-Allen Field.  The win was the 150th career coaching victory for WPI head coach Mike Callahan. Springfield won the opener 3-0 behind a Alex Williams three-hit shutout

Junior Joe Mendez joined the exclusive 100-hit club and junior Donny Pagano tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout as St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) earned a doubleheader split with Staten Island, falling 4-2 before taking a convincing 11-0 victory on at the CSI Baseball Complex.

Derek Dixon slammed Taylor Isadore’s first pitch in the bottom of the 10th over the left-field fence, giving George Fox a stunning 5-4 win over the defending NWC champion Whitworth Pirates and a three-game series sweep at Morse Field. With the win, George Fox are now only one game behind the Linfield Wildcats in the conference standings.

Oberlin used two different paths to arrive at the same result, earning a doubleheader sweep of Hiram by the scores of 11-0 and 14-8.  In the lid-lifter Mattie DeDoes tossed six innings of shutout baseball and his teammates backed him up with 11 runs on 15 hits as he improved to 3-0 on the year.  In the nightcap the Yeomen found themselves in a lull, trailing 7-3 heading into the eighth inning before erupting for 11 runs over the final two innings to complete the sweep.

Aurora swept the 2013 Northern Athletics Conference opening doubleheader from Milwaukee School of Engineering, winning 12-3 and 3-1. Led by a solid pitching performance from Brad Warnecke and tallying runs in six of the nine innings,Aurora coasted to a game one win. Game two of the doubleheader saw the Spartans receive another solid pitching performance, this time from Eric Palmer. Palmer allowed one run in the fifth inning, allowed just two hits over 7.2 innings.

Benedictine's games on Saturday were polar opposites with pitching winning game one and the offense taking care of game two.

Opening both the conference and home schedules on the same date, Benedictine opened with a sweep of Concordia (Ill.) 3-2 and 17-7. The first contest saw a pair of hurler's duel as Kevin Crowley and Concordia's Bobby Beelen battled deep into the game with Crowley getting the win, improving to 3-0. In game two, Benedictine scored 11 runs in the sixth inning cruised to the victory.

With his third hit of game two, an eighth-inning single to center field, Pat Christopher tied Russell Coover for the career record with 145 hits, leading McDaniel to a doubleheader split with Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference baseball opener for both teams. The Diplomats took the opener 6-2 behind a complete game, seven strikeout performance from Brendan DeMond before the Green Terror plated six runs in the sixth inning of game two for a 10-4 victory.

Rockford opened the Northern Athletics Conference portion of its 2013 schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican. The Regents took the games by scores of 6-5, 9-6.
