NYU gets historic win, LC wins upset

New York University won its first varsity game since 1973 in Atlanta, GA. After falling 18-3 in the first game of the doubleheader, the Violets bounced back and defeated host Oglethorpe 2-0 in the nitecap to record their first victory of their first-ever season as a NCAA Division III varsity program.

Louisiana College registered their biggest non-conference win in several years as they upset #16 Trinity (Texas) 7-6 in Tyler, Texas as part of the Clements Fluids Classic at the University of Texas at Tyler. As he has done throughout the early part of the Wildcats' season, LC was carried at the plate by senior catcher Garrett Parsons, who went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and his third home run of the young season.

Junior Michael Trentham had a game-winning RBI single to cap a three-run seventh as Randolph-Macon swept a home doubleheader with RPI at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park. The Yellow Jackets took the opener 4-3 before claiming an 8-2 victory in the nightcap over the Engineers. Game two was called in the bottom of the eighth due to darkness.

After engaging in a low-scoring affair in the season opener on Friday, the bats came alive for the Carleton Knights. The Knights rallied for a 17-16, 10-inning win over Hardin-Simmons University before dropping a 9-8 result to Texas-Dallas in the nightcap. Hayden Tsutsui had a monster game, going 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, four runs scored, and six RBI in Carleton's first win of the season.

Emory junior second baseman Dylan Eisner went four-for-four, and junior shortstop Jack Karras drove in three runs, to lead the third-ranked Eagles to a 13-3 win in seven innings over Lynchburg to open their 2015 campaign at Chappell Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Senior pitcher Connor Dillman battled through five innings to earn the win in the contest, yielding just a pair of earned runs on five hits and four walks.

Chapman made its Hart Park debut with mixed results on Saturday. The Panthers defeated visiting Occidental 6-3 in the first game of a SCIAC doubleheader, behind a strong pitching performance from junior RHP Matt Smith, before dropping the second game 8-2 as well as the weekend three-game series to the Tigers.

Sewanee opened the 2015 season the same way they opened 2014, with a sweep of Johnson (Tenn.).

Sewanee opened its 2015 season by sweeping visiting Johnson at historic Montgomery Field. The Tigers won the opener 20-2 and then took the nightcap, 10-1. Both victories gave new Sewanee head coach David Jenkins his first two wins in his coaching career.

Junior pitcher Jackson Watt threw all nine innings and struck out nine batters for a complete-game victory as Willamette defeated Lewis & Clark, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader at Wilsonville High School.

For a second straight day, Covenant senior Andrew Beck provided a walk-off hit. After Friday's walk-off single in the 11th inning, Beck launched a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Scots a 4-3 victory over Methodist.

Playing their first doubleheader of the season, East Texas Baptist took both games in dramatic fashion, winning on a walkoff sac fly in the 12th in game one and hitting back to back home runs in the bottom of the sixth in game two to put themselves ahead for good. Kirby Moore picked up his second win of the season in the first game, pitching six innings in relief. In the second game Jimmy Russo picked up his first win of the season, pitching the final inning and two thirds; only allowing one hit and no runs. In the two games Dynas Doud had five hits in eight at bats, scoring two runs with one RBI. Connor Combs had four hits in eight at bats with five RBIs.

Three Bridgewater pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout to lead the No. 21 Eagles to a season-opening 2-0 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan. The game was to be played at Newport News, Va., but Christopher Newport's field was unplayable. The Eagles and N.C. Wesleyan decided to load the buses and make the trip to Rocly Mount and played the game on the Bishops' home field.

Buddy McCoy and Kevan House each knocked in a pair of runs, leading Texas-Tyler to an exciting 8-6 win over Texas Lutheran. Senior Garrett Nelson hit the game-deciding shot, a solo home run to give the Patriots the 6-5 lead with two innings to play.

Mary Washington opened the 2015 season with an 11-2 and 16-1 doubleheader sweep of Plattsburgh State at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles erupted for 25 on the day, with starting pitchers allowing just one hit combined. In the opener, junior Ryan Van Assche allowed no hits in five innings, as the Eagles rapped out 12 hits in an 11-2 win. In the nightcap, UMW scored three in the first and eight in the third to build an 11-0 lead, and added five in the sixth in a 16-1 win.

Emory & Henry picked up its first win of the 2015 season as it split a doubleheader with Berry at William Bowdoin Field. The Vikings prevailed by a 7-6 score in eight innings in game one while the Wasps took game two by a 6-4 score.

Beneath gray, rainy skies the No. 8 Cal Lutheran baseball team returned to action against Puget Sound of the Northwest Conference. The home team took the only game of a scheduled doubleheader by a score of 7-3 despite heavy rains falling over the last three innings.
