Newbury finally gets win over Bucs

Senior Steven Broy rapped out a pair of hits as Newbury used a combined four-hitter from a quartet of pitchers to notch a 3-1 non-league victory over Mass-Maritime Wednesday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field. Jacob Pringle allowed two hits and an unearned run while fanning four over the first five innings to earn his first victory. Ethan Forrest, Lyndon Brundige and Daniel Lumb pitched the fianl four innings of shutout ball.

Chicago made its home opener a successful one, using opportunistic offense to defeat Edgewood 12-7. On a cold and foggy afternoon, Edgewood loaded the bases with one out in the first frame of the game. However, UChicago starting pitcher Nick Watson induced an inning-ending double play to escape the threat. From that point on, the home team continued to capitalize on breaks that went their way.

Maine-Farmington was the benefactor of five errors in a 6-4, non-conference win over the Bates Bobcats at Leahy Field. Bradley Jackson had a solid outing on the hill for the Beavers. Jackson pitched 5.2 innings and only surrendered two hits and no runs.

No. 1 Salisbury traveled to our nation's capital to take on Marymount at the Washington Nationals' Youth Baseball Academy and earned a 13-3 victory in CAC play. The Sea Gulls built a big lead early in the contest, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. When they scored five in the fourth, the rout was on.

Jared Baird went the distance in game one and three pitchers combined to allow two hits in the second game as Washington & Jefferson swept Bethany at Ross Memorial Park. The twinbill originally scheduled to be played at Bethany, but moved to Washington due to rain. Because of that, the Bison served as the home team for both games. Washington & Jefferson won the first game, 4-1, before recording 11 hits in a 9-2 triumph to complete the doubleheader and season sweep of the Bison.

Brandon Miller set the career wins record at Lynchburg with his 24th win.

Senior Brandon Miller set the Lynchburg record for wins in a career as he picked up number 24 in a 12-6 ODAC victory over Hampden-Sydney. The win breaks a four-way tie for the top spot on the record board as Miller was tied with Matt Gouker, Sean Conlin, and Mike Ranson coming into Wednesday's start. Wednesday's victory moves the Hornets within 1.5 games of Hampden-Sydney who currently holds the sixth, and final, spot in the ODAC standings.

Guilford used a six-run fifth inning to rally past visiting Roanoke 9-7 in an ODAC triumph. Nathan Fulbright and Jacob Roberts both had two-run singles in the decisive inning, which turned a 6-3 Guilford deficit into a 9-6 advantage.Six straight Quakers reached base in the sixth inning, including Fulbright, whose two-run single tied the game at 6-6.

Manhattanville opened up a 3-0 lead against Mount St. Mary, but the Valiants could not hang on, falling to the Knights by a final score of 6-4 in non-conference play at Dutchess Stadium. It was a staff day for the Knights as Mount St. Mary used eight pitchers in the game.

Sneaking out a 5-4 victory in extra innings, North Central (Ill.) secured the season series sweep over Millikin. With the score knotted 4-4 after nine innings, Chris Hill began the Cardinal rally with a lead off double in the top of the tenth, his third double of the contest.  After a groundout to advance the runner, Jake Rone stepped to the plate and drove what would turn out to be the game-winning run home with a single down the left field line.

It was a cold, damp day for MIAC baseball, but that didn't slow down Bethel, who took the first game of a doubleheader from the Saint John's Johnnies by a score of 7-5. The second half of the doubleheader also went the Royal's way, as they defeated St, John's 6-4 behind another strong start from Tyler Hietmann.

Junior right fielder Joe Yankee went 2-for-4 with a run scored, four RBI, one double and a homer as Rhode Island College defeated Johnson & Wales, 7-5, at Anchorman Field. RIC sophomore starter Jake Murray picked up the win, allowing just two unearned runs on four hits, to go along with four strikeouts in five innings of work.

Senior Ty Gellinger delivered a walk-off RBI single as Marian won a 2-1 thriller over Ripon at Herr-Baker Field. Junior Earl Vorpagel started the bottom of the ninth inning with a single to right field and moments later stole second base. Tony Grannis singled through the left side and moved Vorpagel to third base to set up Gellinger's heroics.

Matt Doxter outdueled freshman Will Twiss in a mix of snow and rain to lead the Plymouth State Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Salem State Vikings at the Central Campus Baseball Field.  Doxter pitched six and two thirds innings and allowed just a run on five hits with three strikeouts.

Alvernia scored nine runs in the second inning, but needed to survive an 8-run seventh from Haverford in a 19-17 win in non-conference action at Angelica Park. Cameron Coons went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs, and Dan George went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs.

Junior transfer Dominic Reed got his first Tommie pitching victory as No. 10-ranked St. Thomas ran its win streak to six with a 4-2, 10-inning victory over Gustavus in MIAC play in St. Peter. Game two was halted by darkness after five innings with St. Thomas leading 3-2. The seven-inning game will be completed, perhaps as soon as Thursday.

It’s not every season that the Carleton gets to play against an opponent from the Big Ten. On Wednesday, that scenario played out for the first time in 45 years as the Knights found themselves on the same diamond as the University of Minnesota, a contest the Golden Gophers won by an 11-0 score. This was the 50th all-time meeting between the two schools, and the first since 1970. Carleton is now 7-41-2 all-time against their NCAA Division I neighbors.

Webster won its sixth in a row, 8-0, over Greenville at GCS Ballpark. Issac Behme threw a shutout for the Gorloks in the seven inning contest and Webster led, 6-2, in the fourth inning of the nightcap before the rains came. Behme extended his shutout string to 16 innings with the seven-inning shutout of the Panthers in in the opener. Behme scattered four hits, walked none, and struck out five.

Wheaton (Mass.) claimed a 9-3 conference victory over Coast Guard in a rain-shortened five inning contest at Sidell Stadium. Lyons' junior starter Jared Clement earned the win on three innings pitched, two hits, three runs (all unearned), four walks and two strikeouts. First-year Brady Furdon completed the final two frames allowing zero runs on one hit, a walk and one strikeout.
