Birmingham-Southern stops La Grange win streak

Sixth-ranked Birmingham-Southern edged LaGrange 8-5 at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium on Tuesday. It was the first loss of the season for the Panthers in seven games to start the season. Birmingham-Southern took advantage of three errors by La Grange in the ninth inning. The first two led to the go-ahead run and Sam Roberts finished the scoring with a two-run home run. The two teams combined for 11 errors in the game.

The Washington and Lee's pitching staff held Ferrum to one run on two hits, as the Generals earned a 3-1 victory over the Panthers at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The game's defining moment came in the top of the sixth inning with W&L leading, 2-1. Ferrum had the bases loaded with one out, when sophomore Danny Devereux was brought in from the bullpen. The righty struck out the first batter he faced on a high fastball, and then escaped the jam with a called third strike on the outside corner to preserve the one-run advantage.

After falling to No. 24 Salisbury University on Sunday at home, Virginia Wesleyan came out looking for redemption on Tuesday, bringing home the first win on the season, 11-10. The Marlins took a 8-0 lead after two innings but Salisbury came back to tie the game at 10-10. A single sandwiched between walks loaded the bases for Virginia Wesleyan and a third free pass in the inning forced in the winning run.

USA South conference mates fell to non-DIII opponents on Tuesday. William Peace lost to Virginia State 6-4 while N.C. Wesleyan was upened by Barton, 5-3.
