Wesley, Salisbury win in CAC tourney

The College of New Jersey rolled to its eighth straight win as they toppled Rowan, 9-2 on Thursday afternoon. The #13 Lions improved to 22-6 this season and are a near-spotless 10-1 in NJAC play. The fell to 22-11 with loss and 6-5 in the NJAC. After struggling against Rowan in recent years, TCNJ has now won five straight, including a 4-3 victory in the 2016 NJAC Championship Tournament. The Lions now hold a two-game lead in the conference standings. Rutgers-Newark and Ramapo are tied for second at 8-3. A win tomorrow and TCNJ edges closer to securing an early berth into the post-season tournament.

St. Thomas split a non-conference doubleheader with UW-La Crosse. The Tommies rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win 9-4 in the nightcap, aided by three solo home runs in a 13-hit attack. The Eagles won 5-2 in the opener, as ace Caleb Boushley won his 20th career game.

Freshman righty Josh Gerson pitched six scoreless innings, and the UMass-Boston Beacons combined for 17 hits and pounded 24th ranked St. Joseph's (Maine) by the final of 14-1 at Mahaney Diamond. Gerson, who was making just his seventh appearance of the season, scattered just two hits, and had five strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year.  Joe Maguire and Bobby Tramondozzi completed the win for the Beacons, as Maguire allowed just the one run on three hits over two innings.  Tramondozzi struck out one and walked another in the ninth to secure the victory.

Salisbury will take on Wesley in the CAC Tournament third round game on Friday. The winner of the matchup will automatically advance to the championship game on Saturday. Top seeded Salisbury earned their shot in the winners bracket final with a 15-1 win over York (Pa.). The Sea Gulls have outscored the opposition in the first two games of the tournament 36-7. Fourth-seeded Wesley scored an 8-7 victory over the fifth-seeded Marymount (Va.) Saints. Marymount drew with in a run in the ninth with a Karlis Graubics two-run home run but failed to plate the equalizer. Mary Washington, who eliminated Christopher Newport 3-1, will face Marymount in an elimination games.

Drew scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a two-run deficit and walk off with a 5-4 win over Franklin & Marshall at Doc Young Field. The Rangers won a game in the ninth inning for the second straight night and improve to 18-11 on the year with a 6-8 mark at The Doc. Sophomore starting pitcher Jendy Castillo and sophomore reliever Davis Fouts held F&M to two runs into the eighth inning. Castillo went five with five hits, three walks and the two runs to go with two strikeouts. Fouts pitched two scoreless innings with just one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Thomas More defeated in-state rival Spalding, 9-3, at Thomas More Field to complete a two-game sweep of the Golden Eagles this season. The Saints had 12 hits in the game and four players had multiple hits.  Sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence was two-for-four with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted-in, junior shortstop Jacob Whitford was two-for-five with a home run, a run scored and two RBI, senior center fielder Casey Metzger was two-for-four with a run scored and a RBI and senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello was two-for-three with a run scored.wo-for-three with a run scored.

The Roanoke Maroons, with 22 wins in 2017, are closing on a new program wins record. They need two wins in their final six scheduled games to surpass the record of 23 wins they set in 2016.

The Roanoke College Baseball Team earned a 9-7 non-conference win at Ferrum. Connor Chiulli got his first win of the season after going five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Owen Grayson picked up the save for Roanoke. Hunter Peck took the loss for Ferrum, dropping his record to 6-2.

The seventh-ranked Wooster Scots took advantage of Marietta's wildness in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to reclaim the lead after the Pioneers tied the contest at three in the top of the fifth of an eventual 8-5 win by the Fighting Scots in the Mideast Region rivals' annual tilt at Art Murray Field. In the fifth inning two runs scored on a pair of wild pitches and in the sixth the Wooster scoring was aided by four fielding errors.
Five Colby pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout and leading hitter Matt Treveloni added three more hits for the Mules in a 5-0 win against Thomas at Coombs Field at the Colby Baseball/Softball Complex. Colby and the Terriers were scoreless after five innings. The Mules had two runs in the sixth, another pair in the seventh, and a lone run in the eighth inning. Ben Coleman, Matt Garcia, and Andrew Della Volpe all had two hits, one run, and one RBI for the Mules. Ryder Arsenault and Wililam Wessman both had one hit and one RBI.

Westfield State sophomore shortstop Colin Dunn delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning to lift the Owls to a 10-9 come-from-behind win over Eastern Connecticut State in a non-conference game at Bud and Jim Hagan Field. Westfield trailed the Warriors 8-3 heading into the bottom of the third inning.

Denison defeated Muskingum, 8-2 on Thursday afternoon. The Big Red got a strong pitching performance as six pitchers combined to scatter five hits while not allowing an earned run. Mikey Rivera got the start and pitched the first two innings. He gave up one hit while striking out two. John Troll followed with two perfect innings and was given the victory.  The game was closed out by Danny Brackman, Sean Bonner, Daniel Kurtzer and Andrew Bruss.

Sophomore pitchers Henry Curran and Jake Dexter combined for a four-hitter as visiting Southern Maine defeated the Babson Beavers 3-1 in non-conference action at Govoni Field. The win was the 13th straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 20-7.  USM has now reached the 20-win mark for the 33rd straight season.
