Ouch, Heidelberg's HBP leads to big innings

Two big innings lifted Heidelberg to its third-straight win. The Student Princes scored three in the second and five in the seventh in an 8-4 win over La Roche on a breezy Monday in Southwest Florida. Heidelberg (5-4) scored eight runs on just seven hits, taking advantage of seven walks and four hit batsmen. Tyler Smith had the lone multi-hit performance of the afternoon, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Zach Doran, exactly 8,037 days (22 years, 1 day) old, was 1-for-1 with two walks, two HBP and three RBI.

Senior Mike Knell rapped out a pair of hits and drove in two runs, as UMass Dartmouth remained unbeaten and continued its best start in a quarter century by notching a 9-2 non-league victory over Dubuque at the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park. Knell and Erick Ramirez were joined by junior Tucker Hetherman and sophomore Frank Celona in collecting two hits each as part of a 12-hit attack for UMass Dartmouth in support of freshman Ryan Qualey, who scattered three hits and fanned seven over six innings to earn his first collegiate triumph on the mound for the Corsairs.

Facing a tough test in No. 16 Wooster, Haverford (2-4) proved to be more than up to the challenge, registering a convincing 17-6 win over the Fighting Scots (0-2) in Fort Myers. The Fords banged out 18 hits, including eight doubles, to storm past Wooster with key contributions up and down the lineup. The barrage included a six-run second frame as well as a five-run fourth. Haverford added a pair of runs in the fifth, seventh, and eighth innings respectively, cruising to victory in the Florida sunshine. Owen Plambeck led the charge, as the senior was one of six Haverford hitters with multiple hits on the afternoon. Less than a week after Will Karp matched a program record with three doubles, Plambeck also reached that mark, helping key the two big rallies on the day for the Fords. 

Berry scored three runs in the ninth inning, defeating the Emory Eagles 6-3 for the team's 10th win of the year. Berry now sits at 10-5 while the Eagles dropped to 11-3. Milan Sutaria earned his second win of the year in relief, tossing 1.2 innings allowing one hit and a run. Mason Carnes collected his second save, retiring the Eagles' hitters in the bottom of the ninth.

Curry took two games over Penn State Brandywine, winning by final scores of 9-8 and 7-0 at Lake Myrtle Park. The Colonels were led in game one by senior captain Adam Duarte, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with an RBI and a run scored.  Jason Leonard and freshman John Trevino paced the offense with two hits each in game two.

The pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout and the offense exploded as the third-ranked Chapman University baseball team routed Dallas 17-0 on Monday. The Panthers (12-3) won their third game in a row. Dallas didn't do itself any favors as three pitchers combined to issue 16 walks and Chapman took full advantage. Brad Shimabuku had his second consecutive three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs. His grand slam was the third of the year for the Panthers.

After scoring just one run on the first two days of its Texas spring trip, New Jersey City University produced six multi-run innings, separating itself from Howard Payne with three runs in the sixth and seventh, en route to a 15-10 victory over the Yellow Jackets in a neutral site game played at Trinity University. NJCU (1-6) won its first game of the season while knocking off a Howard Payne (7-11) squad that has already played 18 games and went 26-16 a year ago.  NJCU fell to Trinity (Texas) 10-1 later in the day.

The offense was banging on all cylinders as the Penn State Berks baseball team swept a doubleheader with Clarks Summit University on Day Two of the Ripken Experience. The Nittany Lions scored early and often in a 20-5 win in the opener, followed by a 16-1 victory in the second game. Justin Butler tossed 3.0 hitless innings and struck out four batters, without issuing any walks. Dom Mayorca made his collegiate debut, going 2.0 innings and striking out three. In the second game, Ziggy Bowles made his collegiate debut with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. The freshman left-hander scattered three hits and surrendered just one run. Ben Wanner struck out three batters in 2.0 scoreless innings, while Dale Murphy had one struck out in 1.0 inning.

Suffolk baseball's bats got going Monday as the Rams knocked 11 hits to score double digit runs to start the doubleheader with Fitchburg State in the win column, defeating the Falcons, 10-5 at Lake Myrtle Field. Suffolk then swept a doubleheader for the first time this season as it put together a 10-4 game two win over Fitchburg State.

Baruch defeated the Muskies of Lakeland, 3-1, in Fort Myers, Florida. The Bearcats finish their trip with a 5-3 record in Fort Myers and are now 6-3 overall on the regular-season schedule. Paul Sirakowski recorded his third win in as many games with a complete-game of five hits allowed, four strikeouts and only one run earned that scored in the final inning.

In the opening doubleheader during its annual Spring Break trip, Defiance swept the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners by the scores of 7-1 and 3-2. The games were played as a part of the 30th Annual Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Player Development Complex. Defiance evens its overall record at 2-2 on the young season while USMMA is 1-3. "We had good pitching in both games," DC head coach Derek Woodley said. "We had some timely hits in game one and forced them into some mistakes in game two with our bunting and hustle."

WPI used a pair of five run innings to defeat Greenville 13-0 in the second game of their doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Park. After suffering their first loss of the year, 5-3, in the opening game of the day, WPI pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout over seven innings of the second game to move the Engineers to 3-1 on the year. WPI will enjoy a day off in the Sunshine State before heading back to Auburndale on Wednesday to play Mount Union in an early twin bill. Greenville falls to 1-8-1 on the season after earning their first win of the season in Monday's opener.

Catholic scored three runs in five different innings in a 16-5 win over Lehman at TicketReturn.com Field. The Cardinals (8-5) posted their third game with at least 15 runs scored in a 20-hit effort, led by Michael Doody's four-RBI afternoon. The junior went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a triple to help Catholic to its third win in as many days at the Ripken Experience.

Husson (3-4) continued their spring games down South on Monday evening as they swept a doubleheader against Westminster (Pa.) (2-2) at Pat Thomas Stadium. Husson won the first game, 11-0, and took the nightcap, 11-6  Brandon Brunell pitched a complete game shutout for the Eagles in the opener, allowing only three hits with three strikeouts en route to his first win of the season. Harrison Lendrum (W, 1-0) got the start and pitched four innings. He allowed three runs (0 earned) on five hits as he struck out three and allowed one walk.

eight homers as a team, the MIT came away with a 13-7
road win at Nichols College on Monday afternoon. Johnston's
performance ties the NCAA Division III single-game record,
which was last accomplished by David May of Merchant
Marine in 2009 season.

Webster continued play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational by rallying from 6-0 deficit to post a 12-9 victory over Westfield State at the Lake Myrtle Complex. Monday's win came almost 24 hours after the Gorloks were held to four hits in a 5-0 loss to Aurora University, but in Monday's game, the Gorloks offense pounded out 11 hits and outscored Westfield State, 12-3 over the final seven innings of the game to earn the come-from-behind win.Ffreshman second baseman Mitch Daniels paced the Gorloks as he was 3-for-5 at the plate, while senior designated hitter A.J. Smith was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and 2 RBI.

Washington & Jefferson had its offense come alive early and often as the Presidents downed St. Scholastica 10-3 at Lake Myrtle Park. The Presidents knocked a season-high 13 hits and matched their highest run total for the 2020 season.

 No. 11 UMass Boston erupted for a season-high 15 runs, including 10 in a row at one point, to earn a 15-10 comeback win over Framingham State at Monan Park. After falling behind by as many as five runs early (6-1), UMass Boston scored 11-straight runs between the sixth and eighth innings to finish their season-opening homestand 3-1. Sophomore Ryan Leung (Brookline, Mass.) led the offense by going 3-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and two walks. He added a double and crushed his first collegiate home run. Senior Ryan McCormick enjoyed a big day of his own. The first baseman went 4-6 with three runs scored, three RBI and finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

The bats were hot as Swarthmore collected 33 hits in a pair of victories at the Snowbird Classic. The Garnet (6-2) defeated Ohio Wesleyan (1-2) 20-5 in the morning and rallied to knock of No. 24 Marietta College (5-1), 6-5 in the afternoon game. It is the first time this season that Swarthmore has defeated a ranked opponent. Last season, the Garnet defeated three ranked opponents including No. 1 Wooster, No. 7 Rowan and No. 21 Johns Hopkins. Marietta was a 5-3 winner over Susquehanna earlier.

Senior Chase Counts and junior Ryan Clawson each hit home runs to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 13-3 non-conference baseball road win at Brevard in North Carolina. Counts had four RBIs and Clawson had three RBIs, while sophomore Mark Evans added two doubles and two RBIs as the visiting Tigers (11-3) earned their eighth-straight victory. Sophomore Kieran Conway gained the mound win in relief against the host Tornados (2-15). H-SC scored 13 runs on 17 hits … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run each in the second and fourth innings, two runs each in the fifth, sixth and ninth innings, along with the three runs in the eighth inning. The Tigers had leads of 2-0 through one, 3-2 through two, 4-2 through four, 6-3 through five, 8-3 through six and 11-3 through eight toward the final 10-run margin of victory.
