RMC gets win over Lynchburg

 
No. 9 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University faced Heidelberg University in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader located at Peaceful Valley. The Yellow Jackets' (20-5, 6-2 OAC) big four-run ninth inning and Vonderhaar's two homreuns carried them to a 13-9 win in game one before dropping game two to the Student Princes (12-12, 4-4 OAC) by a 5-1 score.

Junior Ethan Iannuzzi smacked two home runs and knocked in three as Randolph-Macon edged fifth-ranked Lynchburg 6-4 in ODAC action on Tuesday afternoon. After Lynchburg stranded two in the top of the seventh, Iannuzzi homered again to left, his seventh of the season, to give R-MC a 5-2 advantage. The Hornets put up two in the top of the eighth to pull within one. In the bottom of the frame, Johnson drew a leadoff walk, went to second and third on wild pitches and scored on an error to make it 6-4. Lynchburg put two on in the top of the ninth, but sophomore Cole Stamm fanned the final batter to record his first save.

New England College maked it six wins in their last seven games as they complete the doubleheader sweep of Colby-Sawyer College, 2-0, 8-2, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon. The NEC pitching staff limited the Chargers to just two hits in game one, with the first one coming in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Perez picked up the win after pitching 3.0 no-hit innings, while Corey O'Day pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh. Tim Krol picked up the win for the Pilgrims after throwing 5.0 innings of one-run baseball, with eight strikeouts. In April, the NEC pitching staff is 6-2 with a 3.88 ERA and 74 strikeouts to just 32 walks. The Chargers lead the all-time series, 33-21, which included eight straight wins for NEC.

Jordan Rios' big solo home run into left field gave SUNY New Paltz a thrilling 5-4 win in 11 innings over Ramapo College of New Jersey at Loren Campbell Memorial Field on Tuesday evening. The team has been fighting somewhat of a seesaw all year, but head coach Thomas Seay said that Tuesday's win represented some of his group's resilience. "I thought the day was a microcosm of the season up to this point, finding a way to win a game," he said. "Earlier in the year, we weren't winning that game. Today we did, which is a good sign." Billy Moeller was great in two innings of work, and SUNY New Paltz was able to get the victory after relinquishing a 4-2 lead. "We threw our better arms today," said Seay of a group that included Moeller, Bobby Ramsey, James Trink, Nick Harvey, James McGovern, Nick Zangara and Andrew Ferber. "We've got a big conference series coming up this weekend against Fredonia, so I wanted to give them some work."

Joe Ruth's career game carried third-ranked LaGrange past Oglethorpe 20-9 on Tuesday night at Hermance Stadium. The Panthers (25-3) avenged a 9-7 loss to the Stormy Petrels (16-15) on March 29. Ruth set a new NCAA-era school game record with three home runs and tied the NCAA-era school record with eight RBIs. He tied his career best with five hits: the three home runs, along with a double and a triple. Ruth recorded his 200th career hit with a home run to lead off the eighth inning. He raised his season batting average to .463, with six home runs and 50 RBIs, all team bests. Ruth is the first Panther to have 50 RBIs in a season since Blake Butcher had 50 in 2017. The Panthers smashed a new team game record with six home runs. In addition to Ruth's three home runs, Jared Aldridge, Cael Chatham, and Rhett Hebert also went deep. The Panthers had 18 hits in the game, 13 for extra bases. The 20 runs marked the 17th time the Panthers have scored in double figures this season.

FDU-Florham senior third baseman Tommy Moore broke the single season record for home runs this afternoon as the Devils topped Stockton University, 5-3, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. Moore broke his own single season record for home runs today, a mark of nine which was tied with Steve Ferrante, who hit nine in 1992. With today's victory, FDU, now 16-10 on the season, has the most wins since the 2014 season. That 2014 team went 22-16, reached the MAC Freedom playoffs and the ECAC Tournament Finals. Colby Craig entered the ninth and earned his seventh save of the season, tying him for the most in a single season in program history with Jim DaSilva (2005) and Steve Seminerio (2010).

SUNY Cobleskill returned home on Tuesday afternoon to sweep a pair of North Atlantic Conference games and the season series from the Wildcats of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute by scores of 5-2 and 15-4 at Fighting Tiger Field. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers are now 13-11 overall on the year including a 5-0 record in NAC action while the Wildcats fall to 2-17 overall on the season with a 0-5 record versus conference opponents. In the opener the Fighting Tigers took advantage of several Wildcat defensive miscues to push across four unearned runs to secure the victory behind the pitching of senior southpaw Ethan Straub, who went the distance going seven innings allowing two runs on five hits striking out seven while issuing no walks to improve his record to 3-2 on the season. In the nightcap Cobleskill took advantage of 10 Wildcat walked batters to jump out to an 8-0 lead after two innings before posting six runs in the bottom of the third inning when the Fighting Tigers accomplished a program first by hitting four consecutive home runs in the frame. The historic feat started when shortstop Eddie Garcia belted a three-run homer to left center field, followed by senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez who hit a monster blast to right field followed by first baseman Frank Leger clearing the left field wall for a solo homer with the home run parade then being capped off by first year catcher Logan Hutter who homered to left field.

The 10th-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls needed no drama to extend its winning streak to 10 games, blanking the Stevenson Mustangs 17-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. The Sea Gulls struck early and often until Zach Adams capped the scoring with a pinch-hit two-run homer to right center in the eighth, giving the game its final 17-0 margin. Benji Thalheimer (5-0) won his third straight start with six scoreless innings of three-hit ball, walking three and punching out seven. Thalheimer now boasts a 17.1-inning scoreless streak over his last three outings. Salisbury finished off their 18-game homestand that began on March 10 with a victory to go 15-3 over that span.

The University of Rochester pushed its winning streak to double-digit wins in a row on Tuesday evening at Towers Field, defeating visiting Hamilton College 6-4. It was a bullpen game for both sides, as 12 total pitchers were used in the contest, six from each side. Rochester's final four relievers stole the show for the home team, as Luke Boylan, Aidan Cooney, Thomas Blaydes and Thomas Karpishin combined to allow just two hits and no walks over the final five innings, striking out six. Boylan (1-0) earned the win for Rochester (20-4), while Karpishin locked down his fourth save of the season in the ninth. Offensively for the Yellowjackets, graduate student Matt Cappelletti was the leading hitter against his former team. The Hamilton graduate, and current UR grad student, went 3-for-4 with a double and key game-tying RBI in the fifth inning.

An unplayable field on the campus of Christian Brothers University led the second game between Rhodes and CBU to be played at Stauffer Field on Tuesday. The Lynx took advantage of the extra home game, dominating the Buccaneers en route to an 11-6 win. The victory moves Rhodes to 20-12-1 on the season. John McNair calmed everyone's nerves in the Rhodes dugout by leading off the eighth inning with a dinger to center field, his eighth of the season. Bryce Anderson then added an insurance run with another RBI base hit, driving in Will Heurtin. The Lynx padded their stats in the ninth with a Wood Kimbrough RBI base hit, and a two-run double from Ben Wilson to make the final of 11-6. Rhodes collected 17 hits in the contest, with all nine starters recording at least one knock. Five different players had multiple hits, with Wilson and Anderson leading the way with three apiece. Eight pitchers took the mound for Rhodes, per the pregame plan from head coach Jeff Cleanthes. Hanaway earned the win with 2.1 innings of shutout baseball.

Graduate student Nathaniel Cormier belted a solo home run and drove in four in Nichols College’s 12-2 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Nichols Baseball Field. Cormier collected a pair of RBI singles and also drew a bases-loaded walk as the Bison (10-11-1, 3-4-1 CCC) stretched their win streak to four. Junior Brad Ellis went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while sophomore Brennan Hyde and freshman William Nath both picked up two RBI. The Bison sent 12 men to the plate in the first and opened up a 6-0 lead in the first behind a solo shot from Cormier, an RBI single off the bat of Hyde, a two-run single from Ellis, an RBI single from sophomore Andrew Croteau, and a run-scoring single from Cormier. Freshman Ben Weber was credited with the win as he tossed four shutout innings to move to 2-0 on the season.

In a slugfest at Bearcat Ballfield, Saint Vincent defeated Franciscan 12-10 to run its winning streak to nine games. On a rare sun splashed day at Bearcat Ballfield, the two teams combined to hit six home runs, as Saint Vincent (13-8, 9-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference) jumped out to a big lead early and then held off a number of Franciscan (10-10, 2-6 PAC) charges down the stretch. Seven players accounted for Saint Vincent's 13 hits in the win, with Billy Perroz finishing 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored; TJ Dailey 2-for-3 with a homer and two walks, two RBIs and four runs scored; Casey Jones 2-for-3 with two RBIs; and Julian Santana 2-for-6 with a run scored.

Baruch defeated the Bloodhounds of John Jay College 8-1 and 14-1 in a home CUNYAC doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The pitching limited John Jay to two total runs and nine hits, while the Bearcats pounded out 22 runs and 22 hits to help stretch their winning streak to seven in a row. The pair of wins also keeps the Bearcats at the top of the CUNYAC standings with a 6-0 record. David Sierra Perez earned the complete game win with seven innings, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts. Robert Fischer earned the win pitching six innings, allowing only three hits, one earned run, three walks and striking out seven. Nicholas Rowe pitched a quiet 1-2-3 seventh inning with one strikeout to seal the win.

Buena Vista scored in five of the first six innings and pounded out seven extra-base hits to help the Beavers open up an early lead while notching their fourth straight win with a 12-6 victory at Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon. BVU led 12-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth and that would prove to be more than enough. Junior Mason Gehling got the start and scattered 10 hits over 5.2 innings. He allowed just three runs but struck out 13 batters while walking none. Harris finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's while Logan Mueller also tallied three hits and one RBI. Beckmann finished 2-for-4 with the home run and double and matched the team-high with three RBI. Evan Taylor doubled twice and scored a team-leading three times. Evan Kling was 5-for-5 with three doubles and thre RBI to help lead the Prairie Wolves, who drop to 11-14 on the year (4-6 A-R-C).

Covenant recorded 10 hits on the day, but was ultimately outscored 6-4 by the visiting Berry Vikings. The Scots fall to 13-16 overall (5-7 USAS), while Berry improves to 23-11. Josh Harvey finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Andrew Brock went 1-of-4 with two RBIs. Tyler Cox was also 3-for-4. Aaron Northcutt got the start on the mound for Covenant, throwing three innings with two strikeouts and one earned run. Scotty Smith (0-1) earned the loss, allowing three earned runs in one inning pitched. Mark Swett (1-1) picked up the win with one strikeout, zero walks, and zero earned runs in two innings pitched. Andrew Norred earned the save.

James Varian hit two of Cortland's four home runs as the nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons held off visiting Ithaca, 12-8, in a non-league baseball contest. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Ithaca on Wednesday, but was moved up one day and relocated to Cortland due to the weather forecast and field conditions at Ithaca. Scott Giordano ended the game 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Varian was 2-for-4 with his two solo homers.

In a battle of NCAA Tournament squads from a year ago, Penn State Harrisburg rolled to a 14-5 victory over the defending MAC Commonwealth champions from York (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon. Penn State Harrisburg (14-14) got back to the .500 mark thanks to a convincing 14-5 non-conference victory over York (14-13) on Tuesday afternoon. Maddux Ryan and Kevin Lehner each hit 3-run home runs, while Ryan, Chase Smith, and Drew Sassaman all had multi-hit outings. Dallas Gilbert earned his first collegiate win on the mound after throwing 5.2 quality innings.

Mount Union swept John Carroll in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening, winning game one 16-3 and winning game two 12-6. John Carroll scored again in the top of the ninth inning off a solo homerun from Erik Daugenti, but Mount Union would go on to win 16-3. The Raiders finished with 18 hits in the game and had six players with multiple hits. In the nightcap, Freshman Chris Phillips made his first career start for Mount Union and gave up four runs on eight hits and struck out six in six innings pitched. Sophomore Chuck Hawley came in and pitched two innings of relief giving up zero runs on just two hits and striking out two. Junior Jeremy Sassano came in to pitch the final inning and gave up two runs on two hits.

Brandon Jenkins drove in four runs and Jack Morin added three more and each launched a home run as Roger Williams University rolled Curry College, 10-2 at the Jack Vallely Diamond on Tuesday afternoon. In need of a bounce-back showing after getting held to just three runs in their weekend doubleheader, the offense answered the call with their 12th double-digit scoring output of the season, matching their total from last season. With the win, RWU rights itself after a tough week last week, improving to 18-3-1 on the season, 5-2-1 against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents. The Colonels on the other hand, drop to 8-11, 1-5 in CCC play

Penn State Altoona picked up its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference win of the season on Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader split with league opponent La Roche University at the Baierl Athletic Complex. The Lions (9-13, 1-3 AMCC) posted a big 13-6 victory in game one of the twinbill, before La Roche (8-12, 4-2 AMCC) quieted the Penn State Altoona offense in game two by prevailing 5-1. The Lions' offense got back on track, producing 13 runs on 11 hits while capitalizing on eight La Roche errors, and the pitching staff limited the Redhawks to just two earned runs. After their strong offensive output in game one, the Lions were held to just one run in game two. Penn State Altoona's total of stranded runners loomed large by the conclusion of the four-run game, as the Lions left 12 runners on base.

Freshman John Mahoney hit a walk-off home run leading off the bottom of the seventh inning to carry Northern Vermont University-Lyndon past Husson University in the nightcap of Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference doubleheader. The 6-5 Hornet victory gave Lyndon a split on the day, as the Eagles had prevailed, 6-3, in the opener. The Hornets are now 5-16 on the season, while the Eagles are 8-12 overall. Tuesday's games were the first NAC contests for both teams.

William Paterson (17-9) defeated Wilkes (15-12) in walkoff fashion, 10-9 in 10 innings, at Jeff Albies Field. Wilkes used a triple and run-scoring groundout to make it a 9-2 game in the sixth. A triple and groundout added one to the Colonels' tally during the top of the seventh inning. Wilkes knotted the score at 9-9 in the eighth, stringing together five hits, an error, a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a WP error. Weis reached base on an error to start the bottom of the 10th, was sacrificed to second by freshman second baseman Tom Radigan on a 0-2 count, and advanced to third on a Carter flyout. Habeeb then drilled a ball through the hole on the left side, a walkoff single to hand the Pioneers the win.

Suffolk grabbed a lead early and never let go of it despite Bridgewater State's best comeback efforts to grab a 12-9 decision over the Bears Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park. In the night, Jake Washock came out of the pen to seal up victory for Suffolk. After he allowed a single through the left side, the right-handed reliever got the next two outs. A base hit and hit by pitch put all the ducks in the pond for BSU and set up S Emerson's two-run double. With the tying run at the plate, Steven Rossi came in to take over for Washock. The senior hurdler struck Jay Wladkowsk swinging, however Steven Shamnoski dropped the ball. Thankfully the catcher successfully made the throw to Cormier at first for the final out of the day that locked up the triumph for the Rams.

Senior Ryan Finegan delivered a go-ahead single in the sixth, graduate student Hunter Silvernail homered one inning later and Stevens Institute of Technology defeated New Jersey City University 4-2 in a non-conference matchup at Dobbelaar Field. Sophomore Christian Kreiser had two hits and graduate student Thomas Paulich and first-year Evan Pravato each had RBI groundouts for the Ducks, who improved to 21-9 on the year. Mitchell Leslie had three hits and Ali Pompey had an RBI single for the Gothic Knights, who fell to 8-17. NJCU has lost eight straight. "A big one for us to get today," head coach Kristaps Aldins said. "Our outfield defense shined and a couple of hard 90's from Christian Kreiser and Ryan Finegan really made a difference in the outcome of the game. Mark DeCicco, Anthony Pron and Jacob Buurman were all solid on the mound, keeping things close and then holding off some late rallies from NJCU."

Oswego State completed a series sweep against Plattsburgh State this afternoon with a 17-5 win. After collecting two wins against Plattsburgh yesterday, the Lakers continued their dominance. Oswego got 18 hits in this one and scored 17 runs. After today's contest, Ryan Enos is tied for first in the country in batting average (.548). The Lakers pitching staff held the #1 ranked batter in the country to only three hits in 11 at bats in the series. Ryan Weiss went 4-5, scored three runs and collected four RBIs. in the game Oswego had a total of five bases stolen and hit six doubles.

Allegheny traveled down I-79 to face Thiel in a nonconference game Tuesday and an eight-run outburst in the sixth inning helped the Gators secure an 11-1 win. Bobby Kusinsky improved to 6-0 on the year as he did not allow a hit in five innings of work while striking out five. Tysopn Bryant-Dawson led the Gators with three RBI on two hits while stealing a pair of bases. Alejandro Samayoa had two hits and two RBI while Chase Chodkowski and Ryan Dougherty also had multi-hit days.

Four Western Connecticut State University errors in the first inning helped No. 2 nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University score five times and the Warriors went on to their seventh straight win, a 23-2 Little East Conference victory over Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium. The game was stopped after seven innings. Fourteen Eastern (19-2, 7-0 LEC) players contributed at least one of the team's 21 hits, 13 drove in at least one run and 16 scored at least one run. Leading 7-0, the Warriors tacked on 16 runs in their final two at-bats on 13 hits. Second basemen Noah Plantamuro and Brent Cosculluela combined for five hits, four RBI and two runs scored while sharing the No. 9 slot in the order. Plantamuro had two singles and an RBI double and Coscuella was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and had a three-run home run and single in the ten-run sixth.

No. 1 ranked Marietta College extended its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of Muskingum University Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers won the first game, 19-8, and then took the nitecap by the score of 10-8. Senior Damian Yenzi led Marietta's 24-hit attack in game one. The Pioneer third baseman went 5-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored and six runs batted in. Zach Marzetz started on the mound for the Pioneers in game two and threw 4.2 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits. Isaac Danford (2-1) got the win with 1.1 innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Sam Mathews notched his eighth save despite allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits in three innings pitched.

Ursinus grabbed an early lead and held it as they defeated Muhlenberg 9-2. The Bears (9-15, 2-3) plated two runs in the first and seven in the second to take a 9-0 lead. They were kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way by the Mule bullpen, most notably sophomore Sam Kelstein. The southpaw had the best outing of his career, tossing five scoreless frames in which he allowed only two hits and struck out four.

No. 4 Arcadia University got the win at Elizabethtown College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game by a 5-3 final. The Knights improved to 25-4 with the win. Tyler Costaro got the win in relief for the Knights, allowing one run, scattering three hits with zero walks and two strikeouts. Owen Margolis earned his sixth save, pitching a scoreless final inning with one strikeout. Zach Steiger started on the mound going four innings, surrendering one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Connor Cheeseman led the offense, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

Penn College concluded their three-game series with Gallaudet University in convincing fashion on Tuesday evening, as they defeated the Bison 11-3. The Wildcats extended their winning streak to five-games and now stand at 15-10 overall and 9-3 in United East Conference play. The Bison fell to 5-23 overall and 1-11 UEC. Trailing 1-0 after one inning of play, Penn College plated three runs in the top of the second inning thanks in part to a Kolten Smith two-RBI triple to right center. Smith would go on to score on a passed ball for the Wildcats third and final run of the inning. In the top of the sixth inning Jacob Carles increased the Wildcats lead to 5-2 on a RBI single to right center. Leading 7-2 in the top of th ninth inning Smith put the game to rest with a three run shot to left field to make it a 10-2 Wildcats advantage. Smith paved the way for the Wildcats from the plate with a 2-for-4 performance including a triple, home run and five RBI's. Brian Robison also had two hits on the afternoon. Gabe Reptsik picked up the win allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
