New England teams get in Sunday games

Freshman Aaron Denis spun a six-hit shutout in his collegiate debut to help Wentworth salvage a split with WPI in the season-opening doubleheader for both squads. The Leopards claimed a 3-0 win in the nightcap after the Engineers took game one by a 6-1 final.

Emory opened play at the 2014 UAA Baseball Championships in Sanford, Florida with a 7-3 over Washington (Mo.), the defending conference co-champions. Washington regrouped and made it a 1-1 day with a 4-3 win over Rochester on the strength of Stephen Bonser's 20th complete game in his career.

Farmingdale State met non-conference opponent Plattsburgh State and picked up two victories by scores of 12-3, 2-0. Michael Dolce and Matt Seelinger both earned their first win of the 2014 season.

Shenandoah kept its ODAC record perfect on the season by sweeping a doubleheader from Guilford. The Hornets were 8-2 winners in the opener before taking the nightcap 4-2 over the Quakers.

The Adrian Bulldogs needed a strong pitching performance after giving up an average of 7.75 runs per game through the first four games of the season. They got exactly that and more as junior Eric Schmidt and senior Rylie Robinson combined on a six-hit shutout of Transylvania in a 10-0 win. Schmidt thrived in his second start of the season going seven innings and allowing four hits. Robinson finished the final two innings in relief for just the fourth time in his career.

St. Scholastica defeated Keystone in a pair of games in a doubleheader between teams who are receiving votes in the latest national rankings. The Saints won the opener 8-4 before rallying from a 5-0 deficit to claim the nightcap, 6-5 in nine innings.

The Vikings won its sixth straight game after defeating Sewanee, 8-4. The game was tied 3-3 heading to eighth inning where Berry tallied five runs to secure the win. Berry swept the series from the Tigers and is tied with Birmingham-Southern for first place in the SAA.

Randolph-Macon picked up a pair of conference wins, sweeping Washington and Lee 3-0 and 5-1. Sophomore right-hander Daniel Byrd took home the win finishing with four K's, five hits, and one walk through five innings. James Walsh picked up his first win in game two, allowing one run, seven hits, and fanning three batters through five innings.

Gallaudet stung Christopher Newport University, 1-0, as both starting pitchers combined to throw less than 200 pitches and struck out a total of 15 batters, tossing a pair of complete games. Brandon Holsworth allowed just five hits, striking out nine as the Bison ran their win streak to seven games.

MCLA defeated Rhode Island 13-8 despite a 3-for-4 effort at the dish from Anchormen sophomore catcher Matt Billington, at the 2014 RussMatt Invitational.

Rhodes shutout Oglethorpe 2-0 in Memphis, Tenn., resulting in a three-game sweep by Lynx. Adam Putman, Max Halasz, and Thomas Beamish combined on the shutout with Halasz earning the win in relief.

Edgewood started their Gene Cusic Classic run with a doubleheader split with Haverford. The Fords claimed the first game 7-3 behind a strong start by Tommy Bergjans, while the Eagles went extra innings for a win by the same score in game two.

Wesley split a pair of CAC games with St. Mary's on at Bob Reed Field. Winning the opener, 7-3, before coming up just short, 11-10 in the nightcap. Sophomore Trevor Mears came up big in the doubleheader, going 5-for-9 with a team-high four runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases.

Senior Andrew Kalish and Junior Nick Palmiero went a combined 7 for 7 to lead RPI to a, 6-5, victory over Husson in non-league action. With the win, the Engineers stay undefeated in theor three games this season.

Junior outfielder Michael Martucci became the 36th member of the NJCU 100-hit club and freshman left-hander Kris Fellin pitched well in his NCAA debut but didn't get run support as the Gothic Knights dropped another close game, losing 2-0 to Pittsburgh-Greensburg.
