Walk-off and win over DI program highlights Tuesday action

Senior Cody Ruben recorded three hits, including a walk-off single, to propel the Swarthmore to an 8-7 victory over Ursinus in 11 innings on Tuesday, Apr. 22 at Clothier Field. Ursinus utilized four pinch hitters along with two pinch runners to score four times in the top of the ninth to eventually force extras, setting up the extra inning drama.

Senior Matt Magni fired his second career complete game to lead Ohio Northern to a 2-1 victory at Division I Valparaiso. Magni did not give up an earned run and surrendered just four hits, while striking out five batters. ONU wasted no time, scoring both runs in the top of the first inning. Oglethorpe was not as successful, falling to D-I Georgia State 18-2. Wheaton (Ill.) also lost to D-I Northwestern 7-5.

Manhattanville had seven players finish with one or more hits against King's (Pa.), defeating the Monarchs by a final score of 12-5 in Freedom Conference play.  Jordanis Nunez led the way for the Valiants, going 2 for 4 at the plate, recording three RBIs and three runs scored in the victory. Manhattanville has won its last five Freedom Conference games, already clinching a spot in the playoffs.

Solid work from the UW-Whitewater pitching staff led to a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville at Kendall Murray Field in Platteville. The Warhawks notched nine runs on 12 hits in game one to coast to a 9-3 victory and held UW-Platteville to just four hits in game two to go on to win 7-0.

Five runs in the first two innings by  Susquehanna helped lift the Crusaders to a 6-1 non-conference win over visiting Lebanon Valley. Susquehanna was ahead 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth before a thunderstorm caused a half-hour delay in the action. When the action resumed, the Dutchmen tallied one run in the seventh before the Crusaders tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and held on for the mid-week win, their first against Lebanon Valley since 2005, snapping an 11-game skid and only the third win vs. LVC since 1999.

Stevens notched a 4-0 shutout victory over Baruch in CUNYAC action at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Ducks used a dazzling performance on the mound by reigning CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week, Jayson Yano, who struck out seven batters over seven innings and gave up two hits with a walk. Peirce Marston tossed the final two frames in relief and fanned four batters while allowing just one hit.

RPI defeated Williams, 15-3, in a midweek game at Williams' Bobby Coombs Field. RPI capitalized on an eight-run second inning in the game. Sophomore Nick Annunziata highlighed the outburst with a grand slam, following a two-run double from junior Nick Palmiero and a sacrifice fly by senior Al Mersman.

Behind a dominant game one outing from senior pitcher John Fortunato, the No. 16 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve split a doubleheader at Allegheny at the Robertson Complex. The Spartans took game one by a score of 5-1 before the Gators responded with a 13-3 victory in game two.

Mississippi College dropped the series finale with Belhaven by a score of 2-1 at Smith-Wills Stadium. Senior Zac Tucker went 7.0 strong innings for the Choctaws, scattering nine hits and four walks in the game. He struck out three batters while just allowing two earned runs. Tucker pitched out of trouble in his start, stranding 11 Blazers, including a runner at third in five of seven innings.

Berry defeated Maryville, 8-1, and claimed the highest amount of wins (27) in a season since the Vikings transitioned to Division III. In the final game of the regular season, five of the six graduating seniors were able to touch the field in their last game. Seniors, Zach Farmer and Austin Neely, had an impressive outings. Farmer tallied three hits with two singles and a double. He touched home twice in the matchup. Neely picked up a pair of base knocks with a run and a RBI. Grant Perkins matched with two hits of his own while plating two runs and scoring twice.

Keystone extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 15-2 victory over Cairn in CSAC action. Rick McLaughlin went 4-6 with three RBIs while Lymbel Guerrero was 3-6 with a pair of RBIs to lead Keystone’s offense. 

Mass-Dartmouth remained in third place in the Little East with a 9-3 win over visiting Rhode Island College.

The Castleton Spartans inched closer to the regular season North Atlantic Conference crown with a pair of road victories over New England College. Castleton scored twice in the top of the seventh to steal a 5-3 win in game one, and dominated the Pilgrims in game two to earn a 6-1 victory.

No. 21 Moravian earned their first win as a nationally-ranked squad with a 13-8 non-conference win at Neumann. The Greyhounds reached double figures in runs scored for the 11th time this season and Moravian is 11-0 in those contests.

Brian O'Neill pitched 6.1 innings for his fourth win of the season and Kyle McLain earned the save as Washington & Jefferson edged Waynesburg 3-2 in the first game of a road PAC doubleheader. The Presidents then completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the nightcap and McLain picked up another save, his ninth of the season.

No. 8 Kean used a three run first inning to take a lead they would not relinquish on their way to defeating Old Westbury by the final of 6-4. Senior Nick Zucchero picked up the win as he tossed five plus innings allowing four runs and six hits. He fanned five and walked two.  Sophomore reliever Vinny Zanfordino earned his fourth save of the year as he threw four innings allowing just three hits along the way.

he Springfield College baseball team picked up a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win on Thursday, beating visiting Emerson, 12-2 on Berry-Allen Field.

Springfield was led by the bats of Keith Cotnoir (Westhampton, Mass.), Jared Hopkins (Cranston, R.I.) and Shane O'Leary (Kings Park, N.Y.) in the win. Cotnoir drove in three runs while Hopkins and O'Leary drove in two each. Frank Calabrese (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) each tallied two hits.

Tyler Kelly (Absecon, N.J.) earned the win on the mound in his first collegiate start for the Pride. Kelly went five innings, allowing three hits and just one run while striking out four.
