D3baseball.com Team of the Week

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the seventh Team of the Week of the 2014 season.

Games of March 24-30, 2014

C  Spencer DuBois, Jr., Cal Lutheran

DuBois was the difference as Cal Lutheran has vaulted into the top of the SCIAC standings. For the weekend, DuBois was 6-for-6 with with three RBIs, two runs scored and a double.

1B  Apolinar De La Cruz, Jr., Wheaton (Mass.)

De La Cruz hit .500 (12-for-24) during Wheaton's 5-1 week collecting two doubles, and one home run. He drove in three and scored four runs. De La Cruz also was perfect in the field recording 69 putouts and four assists.

2B  Taylor Stoulp, Sr., Webster

Stoulp had another explosive offensive week as the Gorloks went 4-0 to open play in the SLIAC. Stoulp batted .500 (7-for-14) on the week. He had a .588 OBP and a slugging pct of .643. He was flawless in the field in 11 chances, and has made only one error in 77 chances at 2B on the year.

SS  Sam Dexter, So., Southern Maine

Dexter hit .529 (9-for-17) to lead Southern Maine to a 3-1 mark this past week. He hit safely in each of his four appearances, including three multi-hit games. Dexter had four RBI and seven runs scored.

3B  Jeff Schweighoffer, Jr., Oberlin

Schweighoffer has hit safely in all 12 games so far this season, as he batted .773 over the final six games of spring break with 17 hits in 22 at-bats. In that stretch he also had 11 RBIs, two sac flies, eight runs scored and 22 total bases.

OF  Chris Gehris, Jr., Alvernia

Gehris reached base nine times in ten plate appearances vis five walks and 4-for-5 hitting. One hit went for a double, as he scored five times and drove in one run.

OF  Joseph Mendez, Sr., St. Joseph's (Brooklyn)

​Mendez​ had a career day in a​ sweep of Maritime on Saturday. he was 4-for-5 (.800) and smashed four home runs on the day, including a school-record-tying three in game one of the twinbill. Over the course of the doubleheader the outfielder hit for the home run cycle and became the all-time career home run leader in school history with 14 dingers. The senior also finished with 11 RBI and five runs scored.

OF  Erik Smoy, Sr., Knox

Smoy helped lead Knox to doubleheader sweeps at home against Robert Morris-Springfield and Beloit. He was 11-for-19 at the plate (.579) in the four games with one home run and 14 RBIs while scoring six runs and stealing six bases in six attempts.

DH   Beau Burgert, Sr., Concordia (Wis.)

Burgert hit .533 (8-for-15) last week for the Falcons over four games. He scored four times and knocked in nine. The senior had his best game in a 6-5 win over Dominican where he went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, including a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning.

SP  Jackson Meland, Sr., Concordia-Moohead

Meland pitched a complete-game, one-hitter to earn the win in Concordia-Moorhead head coach Bucky Burgau's 700th career win. He gave up a single in the first inning and then retired 16 straight batters and 20 of the final 21 batters he faced.

SP  Javier Guerra, So., Spalding

Guerra pitched a seven inning no-hitter in his first career start. He walked a single batter as he faced just one hitter over the minimum. Guerra struck out 11.

SP  Braden Johnson, Fr., Transylvania

Johnson pitched the first nine inning no-hitter for Transylvania in a 12-0 win over Defiance. The only blemish on the day was an error by the Pioneer third baseman, allowing the only base runner of the game. Johnson struck out five batters.

RP  Justin Mosbey, Sr., Hendrix

Senior reliever Justin Mosbey went 1-0 with a save in two scoreless appearances over the week. He earned the save in Wednesday’s 6-3 win against Austin by striking out two in 1.1 perfect innings. Mosbey completed the Warriors’ three-game sweep of No. 3 Trinity (Texas) with the win in Sunday’s 5-4 finale, allowing just one intentional walk with a strikeout in three scoreless frames.
