The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the final Team of the Week of the 2014 season.
Games of April 28-May 4, 2014
C Matt Hammond, Fr., Grinnell
Hammond was an offensive force as the Pioneers won five of six
games in a five-day span to clinch the MWC South Division title. He
hit a sizzling .706, coming up with 12 hits in 17 at bats. He had a
homer, two doubles and knocked in 13 runs while compiling a
slugging percentage of 1.000. Hammond also had a perfect fielding
percentage.
1B Connor Einertson, So., DePauw
Einertson batted .667 (12-for-18) in five games. He hit four home
runs and a double for a 1.389 slugging percentage. Einertson drove
in 14 runs, scoring seven times. With four walks, he finished with
a .727 OBP.
2B Tyler Pastor, Fr., Penn State-Altoona
Pastor batted .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles and a run scored in
a 2-2 week for the Lions. Pastor was perfect in the field.
SS Nicho DellaValle, Sr., Cal Lutheran
DellaValle produced a .600 batting average (6-for-10) with a .733
on base percentage while scoring a team-high six runs in a 3-0
SCIAC postseason tournament sweep. In the field he was flawless
with three putouts and five assists including a double play in
eight touches.
3B Nicholas LoPrinzi, Fr., St. Joseph's
(Brkln)
LoPrinzi had a solid week, batting .571 (8-for-14) with a team
high eight RBI while scoring three runs as the Bears went 4-0.
OF Jameson Brock, Jr., Franklin
Brock set the table for the Franklin offense from the lead off
spot in the batting order, batting .636 (7-for-11) with six runs
scored and four runs batted in. Brock had two or more hits in all
three games that helped the Grizzlies secure a berth in the HCAC
tournament for the seventh consecutive season. He recorded a .909
slugging percentage and a .688 on base percentage.
OF Matt Consigli, Jr., Becker
Consigli batted .519 (14-for-27) this past week, including
becoming the first player at Becker to hit for the cycle in a 13-12
win over Lesley. Consigli belted four home runs and was responsible
for 18 runs (8 runs scored and ten RBI) this past week.
OF Matt Schepel, Sr., Calvin
Schepel helped Calvin finish 5-1 this past week including a 3-1
record against-league leading Adrian. He batted .556 (10-for-18)
with 15 RBI and seven runs scored. Schepel had four doubles and two
home runs, including a grand-slam in a 6-5 win over Adrian.
DH Chris Casto, Sr., Mississippi Col.
Casto closed out his Choctaw career with an outstanding week,
going 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate with a .500 on-base percentage.
He had a team-high six hits and five RBI in the four games. Casto
also stole a base, giving him a perfect 12-for-12 on swipes this
season.
SP Brooks Fortenberry, Jr., Mississippi
Col.
Fortenberry tossed his second complete game shutout of the season
in a 5-0 win over Texas-Tyler. He struck out six with no walks in
the win, allowing just three hits in the game, including just one
after the first inning.
SP Eric Hungerford, Jr., Gettysburg
Hungerford twirled a three-hit complete-game victory to send
Gettysburg into the Centennial Conference championship game for the
first time in program history with a 2-1 win over Muhlenberg. He
retired his final 12 batters, when the ball left the infield just
once, did not walk a batter, and struck out five.
SP Kaleb Rich, Sr., Rockford
In a win or go home situation this past Saturday at Marian, Rich
threw arguably his best game of the season propelling the Regents
into the NACC Tournament. The senior tossed 8.0 shutout innings
surrendering just 2 hits while striking out 8. He allowed a total
of just two base runners to reach second base with only one of
those runners advancing to third during his outing.
RP Aaron Roth, Sr., Cal Lutheran
Roth made two appearances over the weekend, recording two saves,
as he aided Cal Lutheran in claiming back-to-back SCIAC tournament
titles. Roth worked a total of 6.0 innings for a pair of 3.0 inning
saves. The senior hurdler sat down five via strike out and
surrendered just two hits.
