The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the eleventh Team of the Week of the 2014 season.
Games of April 21-27, 2014
C Tyler Ison, Jr., Franklin
Ison played a vital role in Franklin's first HCAC sweep of the
season, by hitting two home runs and leading the team with nine
runs batted in. He batted .438 (7-for-16) with five runs scored for
the week. Ison recorded a .875 slugging percentage and a .550 on
base percentage.
1B Brett Robberts, So., Muskingum
Robberts helped lead the Muskies to a 4-1 week of play after
hitting .500 (13-for-26) with seven RBI and seven runs scored. He
hit two doubles and one home run, resulting in a .692 slugging
percentage.
2B Marcus Uechi, Sr., Hardin-Simmons
Uechi was 11-for-19 (.579) with three doubles and a triple on the
week. He scored 10 runs and drove in seven. Uechi led the Cowboys
to three straight wins over Louisiana College to get back in
contention for a playoff spot with one week remaining in the ASC
regular season.
SS Zach Hynes, Sr., Bridgewater (Va.)
Hynes hit for a .500 average (13-for-26) in six games at the ODAC
tournament to help lead the Eagles to the title. He had three
doubles, a home run and four RBIs in the tournament. In three
tournament games against No. 16 Shenandoah in the tournament, Hynes
was 8-for-12 for a .750 average, including a 5-for-8 day on
championship Sunday.
3B Ryan Luke, Jr., Moravian
Luke helped No. 22 Moravian to a 3-2 record last week by hitting
.556 (10-for-18). He hit safely in all five games with four
multiple hit games. For the week, Luke had eight RBIs, scored four
runs, drew three walks, had a .591 on-base percentage and an .889
slugging percentage.
OF Dan Eichholzer, Sr., Concordia
(Ill.)
Eichholzer led the No. 3 Cougars during 8-1 week with a .441
batting average (15-for-34) with six extra base hits. He scored 12
runs and knocked in 12, one of those the game-winning single in the
10th inning for 1-0 win v. MSOE on Sunday. Eichholzer was a perfect
6-6 in stolen base attempts.
OF Mike Pezzone, Sr., Allegheny
Pezzone racked up a .423 batting average (11-for-26) and an
electric .808 slugging percentage. He drove in a team-high 11 runs
over seven games for the Gators.
OF Gaston Rojas, Sr., Keystone
Rojas batted .667 (16-for-24) with 16 runs scored and six RBIs
while starting all eight games for Keystone on the week. The senior
outfielder also drew four walks and was hit by one pitch to post a
.724 on base percentage while going 6-7 in stolen base attempts.
Rojas collected five doubles, one triple, and one home run.
DH Joe Winckel, Sr., Webster
Winckel led second ranked Webster's offensive attack as the team
went 4-0 and clinched its eighth straight SLIAC regular season
title. Winckel batted .667 (10-for-15) with a 1.267 slugging
percent, hitting three doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBIs.
SP Dan Kluss, Sr., Concordia (Ill.)
Kluss went 2-0 for the week with two outstanding starts. On Monday
he took a no-hitter into the ninth before settling for two-hitter
in 7-0 win. On Sunday game he threw 131 pitches in 10-inning
complete-game effort as the Cougars won 1-0.
SP Chris Haddeland, Jr., Linfield
Haddeland bounced back from his first loss in more than a year
with a vengeance, hurling a two-hit complete-game shutout in
top-ranked Linfield's 2-0 victory over Lewis & Clark. He rang
up six strikeouts against no walks.
SP Kevin Kwedor, So., Mass. Maritime
Kwedor threw the 25th perfect game in NCAA Division III history by
retiring all 21 batters faced in Buccaneers' 4-0 victory over MCLA.
Struck out six while inducing seven ground ball outs and eight fly
ball outs in throwing 60 of 89 pitches for strikes. Kwedor went
distance in scattering seven hits and fanning four in 1-0 setback
to Framingham State.
SP Eric Veglahn, So., St. Thomas
(Minn.)
Eric Veglahn came within one out of recording St. Thomas' first
no-hitter in more than a dozen years but a two-out triple in the
seventh inning ended his bid. He closed with a one-hitter with
three walks and five strikeouts.
RP Corey Armentrout, Jr., Bridgewater
(Va.)
Armentrout picked up the save in both games on Championship Sunday
against No. 16 Shenandoah. Armentrout pitched four innings in the
first game, allowing two hits and one unearned to get the save and
force a deciding game. He then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to preserve a
6-5 win in the second game as Bridgewater won the title.
